Alright - done deal on the GTI. I shopped one other dealer that was pretty transparent and then gave the broker the opportunity to match it, which he did. To be fair, he is the one that came up with a stronger trade than anyone else and he also isn't playing any games with the financing (one dealership said that with "all" the rebates they're giving, I have to go through their lender, and the payments they were quoting reflected a rate of over 5%).
So...
$25,059 for a white GTI sport manual (MSRP of $29,235). $34,200 trade on the 428 (he came up another $200 to sweeten the deal).
The dealer he's working with has to do a trade to get the white, so I may pick it up Saturday, but more likely next week. Sorry @michaell and @jpp5862 - no new car for our lunch Friday.

Very nice!
Where does the broker make his cut from?
2025 Jetta GLI Autobahn, 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xE
The broker's cut is baked into the deal I suppose. Come to think of it, he came up with the price by taking the dealership's advertised deal of $25,854, then adding $225 to "cover his costs." And then the $1,000 loyalty rebate comes off that. At the end of the day, it's within a couple hundred of the best deal I found out there, so I suppose that's about what he makes.
Maybe he actually gets a better deal through his relationship with the dealers and so profits from that, but as long as the deal is the same as I feel I could get on my own, fine with me.
The trade offer is probably the best thing about the process - he came out of the gate with a strong offer, and then since he can more or less get any car out there, I felt like I wasn't dependent on one particular dealership for the strong trade offer.
So, I "sacrifice" the BMW for the GTI, which doesn't feel like much of a sacrifice, and I lower the monthly payment by the incremental taken on by the Durango upgrade.
Mission accomplished - I am rebalanced to my car budget again.

Like the new additions to the 2018 Golf's especially the exhaust pipe area, very nicely finished from what I could see...very Audiesque! Mine is regular stock, plain and simple, which works but like the new treatment so much better. Love all the new stuff but just not ready to trade mine quite yet. And besides the Mini Cooper Countryman, nothing else really grabs me. Like the HR-V but the lack of get up and go and the lack of knobs for the infotainment and a/c make it a no go. Even asked at the Honda store if these things will be addressed in a couple of years but two sales guys said I was the first to mention this issue. Really?? Told them it's a bit unsafe to take ones eyes off the road to change things but he said there's the steering wheel controls that solve that issue. Maybe true but...I want my knobs back!!! Well, got texted to come in and work again today my n/s day. Was waiting for the text and it came a bit later than last week. Hell, just give me the extra day each week and be done with it already! Could use the extra $ as we start to make plans for the kids wedding. Plus the oldest and her guy are house hunting and gotta feeling they might ask for a temp loan to have a larger down payment. We'll see about that though. Finally hit my 40th quarter so now qualify for s s at 66, but there's that pesky rule where I'll only get a fraction due me because of my civil service pension. Totally unfair but that's for another discussion! Off to work I go!

Gave some serious thought to a Civic Si, used or the new model coming out, and just decided I liked the more subdued look of the GTI better, not to mention I think the GTI will still perform better than even the new Civic. There's a lot of nostalgia there for me with an Si, but of course, I was 18 when I had one last. The overall styling just seems a bit "young" for me at this point. Not that that stops me from considering a used one for my next car.
I do think I'll have a Miata RF in my future, but I couldn't bring myself to pay the MSRP they're demanding right now for what is just inherently a short-lived car.

3, but I think the first Durango was more of a trial run for the R/T.
Okay - I figured several here will be happy to indulge and educate me.
What exactly does LSD do?
Wait a minute - let me rephrase that.
What exactly does the limited slip differential that's on the Sport and upper trims do? Like, I'm interested from a mechanical perspective as well as a practical one. Are the benefits noticeable in driving "below the limits?"

So my sister brought her late husband's Explorer to the selling dealer where the manager said he would have some wholesalers look at it to try and determine its value. She got a call from the manager who told her that the dealership's owner got wind of what was going on and instructed the manager to take the car back & they'll deal with it. My sister is excited (about this).

A standard open differential delivers the same amount of torque left and right. A limited-slip differential creates adds friction to transfer torque to one side or the other. So if one wheel is spinning, an LSD can redistribute torque.
This would be helpful say in a very tight turn, where the inside wheel will get light and start to spin. The LSD would send more torque to the outside wheel, and give you a yaw correction.
When you floor it coming out of a bend, your front axle gets light and you understeer--so added torque to the outside pulls the car in.
It works other way, too, in throttle lift-off.
then there's viscous-coupling and torque-sensing LSDs and that's a whole other lecture.
That's the one drawback of getting an Audi TDI vs. a VW. No loyalty for some of these deals, for me.
Probably a good thing.
If you have a copy of your VW TDI registration, you should be good to use that at least until it expires (even though you don't technically own it anymore due to the TDI buyback). This was verified at 3 separate VW dealers, and actually executed at 1 of them because we did technically sell our TDI before buying the Alltrack.
