Thanks Q - great info as always. So these '14-15 models offered right around $20k, give or take a grand, seem to be good deals, both from a cost vs. new (for sure), as well as vs. auction.

RE the i3; the later the model year, the better. First year cars had a lot of teething issues.

I did 110 charging for the first year I had our Leaf. Having a 240V charger makes EV life so much nicer. I can’t recommend it enough. One hour of charge can give you some meaningful miles if you need them unexpectedly. And the chargers are pretty inexpensive.

Our car show is in two weeks. But, it gets sadder and sadder, as time goes on. Only the domestics seem to put a lot of effort into it.

I understand locking up a Porsche 911, to keep the kids out of it. But, if you have a sub-$80K vehicle, it should be unlocked. Unless you don't really care about selling them.

So you agree with me that VW dealerships shouldn't act like the Golf R is a Buggati Chiron and not let you test drive the $40K car?

Yeah, but you still have to look at it every day as you approach it, so the cost is far greater than the money would imply. ;b

Come to think of it, Close Encounters (another big Teri Garr movie) had a bit of Ford content too, with her cool hidden headlight Country Squire, the Ford utility pickup driven by Richard Dreyfus, and the rental later LTD wagon Dreyfus drives through a fence near Devils Tower.

Filled up my Infiniti last night on my way home from work.  I came very close to averaging 20 mpg this past week (19.9799197 mpg).  I wonder if the snow tires are actually improving my gas mileage by 1 mpg.  Oh well, I'll just have to nudge the gas pedal a little more to make up the difference.

Speaking of snow tires, the Yokohama Ice Guard winter tires performed very well in this AM's 1" - 2" of heavy, wet snow.  I could tell the difference immediately as the stability control light didn't flicker at all, even with the transmission in Sport mode.  A few weeks ago, I had to drive extra careful in Snow mode.  Now the car just grips and goes.  Very impressive.

Made the kids watch Young Frankenstein a few months back. Such a different type of movie than they’re used to these days, so it took a moment for them to warm up to it, but it didn’t take long before they were laughing hysterically.

Teri Garr was great in that, along with the rest of the cast.

When my son was four or five we were at a local video store and he found the original silent Phantom of the Opera. I told him that there was no sound and that you had to read the subtitles. He asked if I'd read them and I figured, why not? it was onl 50 cents to rent. I expected him to get bored and leave but he watched it all the way through without a break- and that led to him watching all the Classic Universal monster movies- Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, etc...
When he was in First Grade he wanted to watch the original "Rollerball" and again watched it in one sitting. It was rated R but I honestly didn't see or hear anything out of line for a PG rating today.

I know not everybody here likes Jack Baruth, but if you haven't read his review of "Bullitt" he posted last week on TTAC, you should.

There were some good comparisons of movie making 50 years ago (!) versus movies today. Most folks find Bullitt a dreary, boring movie, save for the chase scene.

More character development, less dialogue - really makes you think about the plot and the characters more.

EDIT - when I was 14 or 15, my uncle (retired Air Force Master Sgt, flew on B-52's in Vietnam) lived with us for a few months before his family moved out to CA.

I remember watching "Green Berets" with him, and him explaining all the technologies used in the movie. Great experience, and I think of him every time that movies comes on.

Even when I was a kid, the cars in Bullitt were considered vintage, so I'd watch it for the car spotting. I recall there's a W110 fintail in a background shot.

I love watching Bullitt not only for the chase scene. As one of the commenters on that story noted, it captures life in San Fran back then perfectly. I particularly love the old dingy hospital, which looks third-world compared to what we know today. How things have changed in 50 years...

Ha! I already realized everyone smokes cigarettes in just about every movie ever made, but having a kid who's now 4 has really made me realize how violent and profane our movies are! Never bothered me before, but dang, not a lot of PG content out there that isn't animated.

So how old should someone be for R-rated violence? R-rated sex?

I don't know. Maybe it was the shock factor for me. But, I recall watching Jamie Lee Curtis in Trading Places. You all know the scene. What really s#(ked about it was pausing "the scene" on the VHX tape. Whenever you paused them, the picture would flutter. You could still see the scene. But it certainly was much less clear.

The big difference I believe is how the pay channels really have really started pushing the envelope. Amazon Prime and Netflix have joined HBO, Showtime, etc to really move the bar as to what's considered "normal".

I'm not a prude by any stretch. I'm amazed at what a show like Game of Thrones shows, however. I don't care one way or another because I think the show is very well done. But, I can imagine some people I know personally who get their undergarments all in a twist over the show.

As I tell them, "if it offends, don't what it". Then I get the "well I can't chaperone what my child watches". OK.....don't subscribe to HBO, then. Problem solved. They never like my answers.

Really depends on the parent and, I suppose, the children.

For me, I want my children to leave the cares of adulthood/adolescence for those periods of their lives. As a result, my children, who are ten and thirteen, still enjoy "kids shows" that most their age would eschew. Probably the most violent content they have watched is Star Wars, and my wife still won't let them see the Ep 1-3 trilogy yet. Probably the crudest content they've watched is "Diary of a Wimpy Kid."

Another common one, Harry Potter, they have only seen the first two movies and read through book five. Again, for my wife, there is just too much violence in them. So, she's set them on a slow pace so that they're more mature when they get to the more violent content (which, honestly, starts in earnest at about Goblet of Fire). No superhero movies, which are so popular today, etc.

To the contrary, my brother watched pretty much anything (Transformers comes to mind) with his kids, even when they were quite young. My nephew is the same age as my son, and he watched the first Transformers when it was relatively new. I don't recall how many years now, but he must have been only five or six.

As to whether it really matters? I don't know; time will tell for those two.... we have our own little social experiment in the making!

I do know that a lot of the crap I saw at way too young an age probably left more of an impression on me than I would care to admit....

I never hand calculate any longer. Just look at the TC to see how things are trending. If I am deluding myself, I don't want to spoil my good feelings with reality. I get enough of that!

Though I should check the elantra at some point as a reference. I know that the RDX runs IIRC about 1 MPG high (when I checked in the past).
