And that’s why I park far out and hoof it in! And you never, ever park where the drive through can do that.

I told him the mower will let you know when it’s out of gas but it won’t tell you it’s out of oil until it’s too late. I knew I got my point across when Son #1 passed those words onto his younger brother when it was time for him to start cutting the grass. Both of them have passed on those words of wisdom to their sons. Sorry @q, if you didn’t have a father son talk to your son about this, this one is on you...tsk, tsk. :'(

LOL. Well I never check it. haha. You'd think someone like me would. I just don't have the respect for my lawn equip that I do my cars, I guess.
That really surprises me. I would have thought you checked the oil but somehow overlooked that with your son. I used to be very conservative about those maintenance things. Many years ago I even checked the brushes in my power tools. Then I realized that I didn’t use them enough for them to wear very much and by the time they did the tool would be so old I’d more than likely want a new one. On top of that, I’d probably have problems finding replacements by then. I think that was about the time I grew up or maybe it was the first time I saw signs that I was getting lazy. I don’t even want to cut the grass anymore. Just called grandson #1 to come over tomorrow to cut the grass AGAIN. This will be the 4th or 5th time this year I’ve done that. I’m having a hard time trying to convince myself it’s laziness and not age. :'(

I even check the oil occasionally. Definitely not every time though.

Speaking of which, need to go out now and mow again!

Yeah, lack of ground clearance is the only thing preventing that kinda thing happening here. At least so far...

I'm on year #2 with the new Bolens mower and the oil (which I've never changed) still looks full or nearly full. I ordered some carb cleaner from Amazon and will try to do that tonight to see whether it improves starting performance.

Warning, @jmonroe length story coming up.

TL;DR - My wife drove through the rock garden of a Dunkin Donuts because the drive through line was blocking her and in doing so destroyed a shrub but didn't know she destroyed a shrub but she did destroy it.

I had to go to the bank over lunch and as I was driving there and back in the truck I heard a faint, but distinct rubbing/grinding sound, more pronounced when turning. It wasn't loud enough to warrant stopping but something was definitely off. I get home, climb underneath and in the front axle and skid plates is what looks like remnants of a shrub. WTH?! I start pulling things out and ask my oldest if he knew what happened.

"I'm not totally sure but that might be from when Mom went off roading at Dunkin Donuts"
    "Off roading at DD?"
"Yep, we drove through a bunch of rocks to get to the road. We were stuck in the parking spot"

I'm now really confused because if it's the DD I'm thinking of it's a pretty wide buffer between the parking lot and the road.

"Hey, I heard you went off-roading at DD? When was this?"
"Oh, that was Tuesday. The drive thru line blocked us in so I decided I could cut through the rocks, there weren't any big ones I had to worry about"
"Did you decide the shrubs were fair game though?"
    "What are you talking about?

At that point we go out and I start pulling out branches, needles, again and the look on her face told me she had no clue she hit a bush and dragged some of it home with her. Anyway I cleaned everything out....no long term damage though there are some scratches along the undercarriage. If I remember I'll try to get a picture next time I go to that DD.

Long? I wouldn’t have even been warmed up if Mrs. j had done something like that. The first thing I’d have checked for after climbing out from underneath would have been for the presence of a passenger side mirror. Yeah, we want pics and you probably owe Dunkin Donut a new shrub so don’t forget to show us a pic of that too. :'(

Has been pouring on and off all day, so no test drives today. Just makes no sense to do it as super hard to concentrate with the wipers on and dealing with slow moving traffic. One thing we do have here, is some time. Did stop by the car wash to have them add the extra washes I bought using their Father's Day special. Ordered them online a couple weeks back but never got a copy of the pdf to have them add it to my existing card. Since I've been a regular there going on twelve years now, they sent me a $25 gift card for the hassle this time which I thought was very nice. Had that put on a separate gift card for later use.
My next n/s day besides the weekend is Monday, a good day to start my search. Won't go on a weekend as it just ain't fair to tie a sales guy up just so I can look. Not buying the first vehicle I look at so I can wait to a weekday for my purposes. And will try a few dealerships I've never gone to just to get a different perspective. The short list is the Buick Encore GX, Toyota Corolla hatchback, Mini Cooper, Hyundai Elantra GT and the Seltos. Possibly the Honda HR-V, as I do like the interior except the lack of audio controls through good old fashioned knobs. All fit the 174" or less criteria which is non-negotiable as I will not leave my d d outside 24/7 when we have a garage capable of housing the current fleet.
If size and amount of money spent to purchase & upkeep weren't two very important variables of the equation, I'd add a BMW and a MB to the current short list but since our last name ain't Rockefeller or Mars, such is life. Heck, I'd love to own the new A class or an X2 but a bit on the pricey side and they ain't cheap to keep either. And I think I could be happy with anything on the short list to be honest, I really need to drive them somewhat back to back to whittle that list down. Yesterday, I intentionally took the first Corolla I could find to get a feel for it. Definitely not a penalty box by any stretch...perfect size with great view all around. Interior was o k, ergonomically what is needed is right where it ought to be, nice cloth seats and a modern up to date dash with the tablet thing used as the infotainment center, if you will. Big enough where my eyes were kept on the view ahead at al times. And they really got the CVT tranny right, if I didn't know, would never have figured it out.
As of this morning, no more leaks in the garage! Only a question of when now though!

have feelers out for several MBs. Just can't seem to get responses from salespeople. Some I have reached out to several times through several methods of communication, and still nothing. Very very weird. Today's obsession is a black on tan ML550 with 73k miles. Priced quite reasonably. Depending on dealer fees, I might not even have to negotiate.

Playing hard to get? Must be a MB sales technique to make you feel you have to work for the privilege of owing one.

I say scratch the mini off the list. And the HRV. Make sure the Elantra is the N line if you want to zoom, though the base car is still plenty quick. Just make sure it has the style package (tech on the N line).

Oh boy. The search MAY be coming to an end. I finally decided to pick up the phone and call a place. Of course, as soon as I do that, after about 3 rings, my wife starts yelling through the house for the kids. SIGH. Usual stuff around here that prevents me from doing stuff like this. So I hang up. A few mins later, phone rings, and the guy says "I just missed a call from this number." Alright, well, sure ... so I tell him I'm looking at the ML63 on his website, ask him some questions, he tells me all about this car, they've had it on the lift, done a bunch of preventative maintenance, new tires, brakes, fluids, valve cover and timing seals. Not because it necessarily needed all that but because MB calls for it. OK, I guess. Asked if he happen to notice the head bolts while in there, but that was beyond his knowledge. ANYWAY, short of it is, I made a total offer, including shipping to my door (he has a connection and his website says they ship). He said he'll have to look up the numbers when in the office, but he thinks it is doable. I should know tomorrow. He's also going to do a walkaround video and send it to me.

You're probably right about the Mini Cooper and agree with the fancier Elantra GT. A shame the HR-V can't get the 1.5 turbo from the Civic as I hear it's a bit of a slow poke on the road. I don't mind the looks and like the new alloys. The EX-L model is the top of the line model but think worth the extra cost. Since I've never driven one, am quite curious. Never saw any at Hertz or Enterprise. A Civic just doesn't excite me looks wise and my 2006 LX had some issues that I thought ruined the experience honestly. I was expecting perfection but only got mediocre to be honest. And I guess I still want to be wowed like the Golf has done until recently and these new issues.

PPI from a well respected BMW mechanic (via BMWCCA or Bimmershops.com) would get me pretty comfortable.

I have a bigger problem with low mileage cars than I do with high mileage ones - low mileage cars tend to look great but be mechanically unloved because they had low miles. Odds are if this car has had an issue, it has probably been addressed given the great condition of the body. But again, a good PPI is needed.

The John Deere rider I got when I had a place with a larger lot had an hour meter that would flash at you every x number of hours to remind you to service it. Also, it would accept a massive (and cheap) oversized oil filter that I could buy at any auto parts store.

Cleaned the carb on my push mower this evening, probably won't know whether it helped or whether I did a thorough enough job until I start it cold next time. Based on my research, I think the lack of ethanol-free fuel in my area may cause the carb to collect water. Everything that's easily available to me is E10.

I thought it was the same basic engine as the Alpina he just suffered through, with the very expensive valve seals. That he had done, and engine was still toast (supercharger I think). At least that one is NA, right? No turbos on the 550?

I suppose if the seals were done already, might be OK. otherwise make sure it is factored into your purchase offer.

the seals are cheap. It's taking the engine apart to get to them that costs you. If only you could rehab them by just dumping a bottle of something in the gas tank!

That Alpina was a big big mistake because it wasn’t just the valve seals. That block was so far gone with scoring on the cylinder walls. A gorgeous car that was absolutely not given the love it needed.

An old co-worker had an F10 550i. It was not a low maintenance vehicle. That combined with buying and selling at dump points on the depreciation curve meant he lost his shirt. He replaced it with a V8 M3 that has been a lot easier to own.

Based on my research, I think the lack of ethanol-free fuel in my area may cause the carb to collect water. Everything that's easily available to me is E10.

Unless you can find a good additive to counter the ethanol, you may need to run the mower until the tank is empty to prevent that issue. I have a pressure washer that dad gave me and had to have the carb rebuilt because of the white moisture deposits caused by ethanol. After 5 years, No issues since. I run the pressure washer dry until it stalls.

I love the 1st generation TSX. Nice colors. Just needs to be a tech package car. And a 6 speed stick. Making it a wagon might be too much to ask! Plus I don't think they ever came with a manual, and not sure you could ever get it with the 4 cyl.

so make it a dark blue over parchment, tech, manual and get back to me.

I can't do that every time I mow, but it is feasible to do over the winter. In the fall, I always dump whatever fuel I have left in the can into one of my cars so that it doesn't sit all winter. Any thoughts on using the carb cleaner with the carb still attached and mower running versus taking the carb off the mower, disassembling it, and cleaning it?

When I run the mower(s) for the last time each year, I add some Stabil as I am running out the tank.

Man, am I ever late to this discussion.

When it was time to let Son #1 cut the grass, the first thing I told him was to always, ALWAYS check the oil FIRST.

I check it at the beginning of the year, and never remember until the following year.
So, you’re going to rely on your mower to remind you. Good luck with that.

Well... I’m mowing tomorrow. Wish me luck. :)

I’ve had this mower forever it’s never needed oil.

EDIT: Of course, Hoovie just commented on the ad saying that he sees these things in for service for valve seals all the time with the Car Ninja, so who knows - could be a beautiful ticking time bomb just waiting for an engine out service...

It’s a BMW with over 100K miles. Of course it’s a time bomb.
    Some are. Many are not.
Exactly. Stick with an I4 or I6 and you’ll be fine- at least that’s been my experience with the seven BMWs I have run past 100K miles.

I have a two gallon can I use for the mower. I add Sta-Bill to the can every time I refill it.

I was browsing the Autoweek and Car and Driver sites checking out their favorite coupes and sports/sporty cars, and the M240i is still at or near the top of the rankings. The main difference between a new M240i and my car is the new car's modular B58 motor- and of course my car lacks the LCI exterior and interior tweaks. So I'm thinking more and more that I should just add the M Performance interior, M Performance LSD, and Dinan flash tune to my 2er; the bottom line is that I'd end up spending 80% less than what almost any of the cars I've looked at would cost. And I won't have a car payment.

We didn't get the first gen as a wagon, did we?

I agree, the first TSX was a sharp design, just like the TL of the period, a golden age for Acura sedans.

you are right now that I think about it. That was the gen 2 model, when they also added the V6.

it was a great design, as was that generation TL. Comparable to how well BMW nailed that vintage 3 and 5 series.

...and I don't think they ever offered the V6 in the TSX wagon that they sold here.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
    And IIRC wagon was auto-only.

Unfortunately the TSX wagon was 4-cyl/auto only. And still didn't stick around long enough.

I am bombing here tonight it seems. I really thought they had the 6 in the wagon, but could not find one.

there are a few gen 2 manuals out there. This one, other than the black interior, looks nice. a little pricey probably, but I'm not buying now so who cares?
