Good perspective on how big a barge that is.

But basically what I want to have eventually. A truck for work duty and a sporty car for driving around.

A long time ago a poster here stated: “ every man should have four vehicles, a sports car, a luxury car, a truck and……something else that the wife drives” :p

Just for grins, I looked at the Tesla Supercharger network as it would have pertained to my recent road trip. I think I would have been fine until I actually got to the Black Hills. I spent two nights in Medora, ND, where there is no readily available charging, and you have to go 37 miles east to Dickinson for a charge. I easily drove several hundred miles in that area, plus my next destination was driving south to Devil's Tower. Stop me if you've heard this before--the nearest Supercharger is 28 miles further west from my route, in Glendive, MT. Devil's Tower is 220 miles south, so you'd be running on very few electrons by the time you got there. The Supercharger in Spearfish, ND is an additional 60 miles away. I think I would have been fine once I got to Rapid City, and on the return trip. Obviously, there are other (slower) chargers available, but there are definitely some holes in the network the further you get out west.

I'm on a vacation/road trip down in the southwestern part of Colorado and your analysis really sums up the charging aspect of the EV experience. While I could have done this trip in the Model3, I have to say I would have been more limited in my ability to go wherever I want, whenever I want. The last couple of days I've enjoyed being able to "see where this road goes" or just take the long way back to my hotel. Those aren't always options in an EV, especially in remote areas like these.

I will say the L2 chargers are much more common than they were even a year or two ago which helps but you still have to do a bit of planning and be OK with somewhat limited options if you want to be more open ended with your plans. The L2 chargers are great to charge up over night but if you're out and about for the day they aren't really fast enough to provide you with any meaningful charge.

Couple that with how much I'm enjoying the Defender (just passed 2,000 miles yesterday) and I have to say my interest in the Rivian continues to wane.

EVs certainly have their appeal. I doubt that I will buy an EV until you can charge an EV as quickly and easily as you can fill up a gas/diesel based vehicle.

I’d only get a full EV as a 2nd car for only local duty. Making it much less practical at current prices since I would need another nice car for the wife and trips.

A plug in hybrid is probably ideal for me at this point.

It is. I just don’t fully understand the technology enough yet to know how you ‘tune’ 2 identical kw output motors so that one is faster than the other. Two identical CI ICE motors? Yeah, I get that. I couldn’t do it but I get the idea and process.

Thanks. I’ll be heading to Kokomo IN (from Bloomington IN). It may be a week or so as the salesman is off this Saturday. I’ll have to see what works out since we have HS football Friday night and going to Greencastle IN for DePauw football scrimmage to see my daughter. First world problems.

Make sure you check Waze or Google maps and look at construction- they are working on 465 around Indy and converting SR37 to I69 from Indy to Bloomington and Martinsville IN is a traffic mess. (Although it wasn’t bad at all at 5am today🤣)

It's funny, for a while I had the Model3 and the C30 and found I never drove the C30 even though they were parked right next to each other and all I had to do was grab the keys.

But I tend to agree with your line of thinking. I did drive the Tesla 11,000 miles in 9 months and never had an issue, so while it's doable you definitely give up some options on road trips.

For most people I think a PHEV is perfect, charge it each night and use mostly electric in daily driving but you have the gas backup if/when needed.

Semi related, I reset one of the trip computers when I left Denver last week. So far I've traveled 1,083 miles and the Defender is showing an average of 23.8 MPG. Not bad for a nearly 5,000 pound tall brick.

Out of my last 4 cars 3 were bought away from the Burgh area. The furthest was Mrs. j’s 2012 Subie that was bought in Columbus Ohio. That is my limit of travel to get a car. Yeah, it was only a Subie so I guess you could say it didn’t deserve even that but that’s my limit.

Just last week when I mentioned to a group of people about going out of town to get a car, I said that Son #1 once said he’d go to Chicago to get a car. When he heard that he corrected me saying, “yeah, I said that years ago but if I found what I really wanted across the country at a good price, I’d hire someone to check it out and if it was OK I’d buy a plane ticket and do it that way”. What’s wrong with him? Where did I fail? :(

Looks like I was wrong anyway. 465 is a mess because they are working on I 70 and I 65 inside of 465. All the traffic is being pushed out to 465 because there is only one lane open on I65 and I70 and most of the downtown exits are closed.

That does sound like a mess! Even construction out in (seemingly) nowhere in Nebraska on I80 caused backups that took over an hour to get through. Again, single lane traffic (but there were only two there to begin with!).

Last I heard (I drove it 3 weeks ago), the North Split of 65 and 70 was closed, hence the detours onto 465 for both interstates. They were recommending that I-65 traffic use I-70 between the south split and 465, just to relieve the volume on that one leg of 465 by separating the detoured I-65 traffic from the detoured I-70 traffic, but it seemed few were following that suggestion.
