My granddaughter finished 8th at the State gymnastics meet. She was, rightly, pretty proud of herself. She said she was the 8th best gymnast in Pennsylvania and she is only a sophmore.

A friends father (who has a reputation for being not very likeable - the most polite thing I can think of for him) told her she was the 7th loser.

Talk about some people needing punched in the throat.

    ————————————————

    Warning: long post coming up.

That’s the opposite of what happened when my youngest grandson (the 16 year old still on a drivers permit) played in their leagues hockey championship game last Saturday and lost.

Just a little background before I get into this:

He plays goalie for his high school team and was asked by the traveling team that he used to play with a couple years ago if he could come back and play goalie for them because they were having trouble with their goalie both on an off the ice. The traveling team had a record of 1-4 and would surely miss the playoffs if they couldn’t find another goalie, quick.

Son #1 told his son when he started high school that he had to pick which team he wanted to play for because he didn’t want him spending too much time practicing/playing hockey and having his grades go down hill because of that. Given that choice he chose the high school team. Well, my Son told the coach of the traveling team he’d let his son try it for a few games but suggested that he better look for another goalie because he didn’t think it would be good for his son to play for both teams. Turned out my grandson turned a B in one of his subjects (I think English) into an A without going down in any other subjects just to prove to his father he could do both. OK, now he’s really part of the team and they only lost 2 games after he became the traveling team goalie. One of those losses was to the team that beat them in the championship game last Saturday. They played that team twice during the regular season and won one of those games. Everyone on both teams seemed know they’d meet again in the playoffs and they were right.

Like I said my grandsons team lost the championship game but it was how they lost that was was the painful part of it. In the 3rd period with my grandsons team leading 3-2 with about 4 minutes to go my grandson was literally run over by one of the other team’s players and they scored the tying goal as a result of that but no penalty was called. Of course his teams family and friends in the stands couldn’t believe that the ref didn’t call a penalty. When my grandson asked the ref right after he allowed the goal why he didn’t call a penalty, the ref said, “sorry, I didn’t see it. It could have happened like you said but I didn’t see it”. That didn’t satisfy my grandson and he said, “huh, how could you miss it, I was the only one standing there until I was run over!” and he had a few more things to say. The ref said, “OK, I heard enough, if you say one more word I’m giving your team a penalty. Do you want to play with 4 guys for the next 2 minutes”? My grandson ain’t no dope so he shut up but he was furious.

Fast forward towards the end of the game with less than 6 seconds left after my grandsons team was on defense after they had a soft shot on goal blocked. They now backed up to about 10 feet from the red line in the opponents end. His teams best defenseman decided to go for a pass made by the other team rather that just playing defense until the end of the game. Like I said there was less that 6 seconds left when their player grabbed the puck and is now on a breakaway. Everyone figured time would run out before the buzzer but that kid was pretty fast and he took his shot when he was less than 10 feet from the goal and it got by my grandson, literally a split second before the buzzer. So the bad guys won 4-3. It was a hell of a game though.

As soon as the buzzer sounded all of my grandson’s teammates (the ones on the ice and on the bench) quickly skated to him. Hugging him as if they won.

As everyone (both teams family and friends) are waiting for the teams to come out of the locker room into the lobby the opposing coach and assistant coach came over to my son and said, “we got lucky. You guys should have won the game. That was clearly a penalty when we tied the score. Your son has nothing to hang his head about. He’s the best goalie we’ve faced all year. I thought for sure we were headed for overtime but we got lucky”.

When my grandson came through the door into the lobby everyone there (opponent teams family and friends too) started clapping as if he won the game. They knew he played a good game but sometimes that’s not good enough.

When I spoke with him he was in disbelief saying, “I can’t believe I missed that puck. I saw him coming the whole time. I saw the puck the whole time too. No one was blocking my view. I’ve got to stop those shots”.

His coach overheard our conversation and came over and said, “don’t feel bad no one stops them all. If you weren’t our goalie we wouldn’t have even gotten to this game. Chin up. Calm down and get ready for the tournament we’re playing in Buffalo next weekend.

NO, Mrs j and I aren’t going to Buffalo this weekend. We might have if they weren’t playing in an outdoor rink.

Those hockey players and their families are crazy people.

Hockey people appreciate a goalie, even an imperfect one. It takes a special personality and mindset to play that position, easily argued to be the most difficult. (second most difficult is probably the ref, especially with the modern stereotype of sports parents, and the insane costs of high level youth hockey creating even more entitlement among already entitled people).

I like the engine choice but it pushes the curb weight up just over 3200 pounds. That's TTS AWD Dual-Clutch territory weight wise (almost). Caymans are supposed to be lighter. What happened?

couldn't make it to the port today.

Wife wasn't feeling well, so I spent my morn getting the kids off to school rather than prepping to leave. Then went out and found she had left the Sprinter tank at 1/4 tank. So between the delay getting out and the delay of stopping for fuel, I wouldn't have gotten there till too close to their lunchtime, which then means they would not have checked me out till after 1pm. Will have to try again next week.

    ————————————————
With the low mileage I’ve been driving lately, a 1/4 tank could last me for weeks even if I make a dozen speedy trips to the grocery store.

As for the previous poster experience, that was utterly bizarre. I suspect some things, but have no proof. Let's just say it was not normal.

Three months in, I'm sure glad I grabbed my C43 when I did; my local M-B dealer hasn't taken another one in trade or off-lease since I bought mine. And I'd say that less than 25% of the CPO C43 sedans out there have the top speed derestricted to 155 mph, so I truly lucked out.

Same with a lacrosse goalie. Tough, often thankless job that takes unnecessary flack. There’s a reason the team walks their goalie off the field after every game.

I feel your pain. Tough loss for your grandson. Sounds like he is quite talented. Some of the best games I've ever seen my son play in are losses. He gets over losses pretty quickly, but heaven forbid a ref misses a call that results in a goal.

Interesting that you say he plays for both the travel and HS team. In Connecticut, a player can't play for a travel team and the high school team at the same time. The U16 & U18 teams are all short seasons (September - November) and then the High School season starts.

Most are fleet only and typically have to be ordered. When you can get allocation. I’ve had to distribute my orders across all 3 manufacturers as Ford (preferred) couldn’t give me enough slots.

I’m finding a few in fleet trim on lots and buying them up as soon as I can. To give you and idea these are F150 XL trim or WT trim in Silverado. Either V-6 or 8 but zero additional options.

I did an additional Google search and I guess technically they exist but no dealers even mention their availability. I guess Ford has an XL version with 8’ bed for about $35k.
A stripper is all I’d need.

I know my company doesn’t have any and believe me, we’ve purchased near every pickup in existence over the last year. Not one of them a single cab.

Obviously you buy them for a business. Can an individual order one? What I’d really like is a smaller truck like a Ranger but I know Ford doesn’t offer that in a single cab.

Thanks for the compliment. My grandson has really worked hard on improving his goalie skills.

Coincidentally, I just got a call from Son #1. My grandsons team just won their first tournament game in Buffalo 3-0. Supposedly from a pretty good team.

With the game well in hand (less than 3 minutes to go) his coach put in a couple kids who were on the bench. No sooner after he did that his team lost control of the puck and here comes another breakaway. This this time he made the stop. After the game my grandson told his father, “there was no way I was gong to screw up again”. His coach came over and said, “maybe I shouldn’t have made those substitution but I thought a couple of our guys looked tired. Thanks for covering my a-s-s”.

I’m pretty sure I’ve mention this before a couple of years ago:

I was in the Home Depot parking lot after picking up a few things for the flip house we were working on at that time. There was a real pickup truck (not pristine looking like most of the pickups you see today) parked a few spaces from where I parked. I walked over to the owner and said, “this pickup sure is different being a two door job and showing signs of wear”. The guy said something like, “I make my living with this truck. I need 2 more feet of bed space more than I need 2 more doors”.

Somebody has to make pickups like that, even today.

First time I ran out of gas happened today. Was supposed to take a 2020 Nissan Kicks with just under 61K on the clock to a dealer who bought it in North Miami Beach. We were in the sold lot in West Palm Beach right near the airport. Started her up & as always, first look to se how much petrol I've got. The low fuel icon is on & the amount of miles left is all, "---", so told my lead I'd need to stop at the station to get some juice. While waiting on the others to get ready, the engine just cuts out. Wasn't the battery as the radio & lights still worked. The guy who runs the place came over & told me I had run out of gas. Within ten minutes, someone came with a 5-gallon can and put in enough to get me to the closest station. Put like 6 gallons in as the trip down to the Toyota store was only about 73 miles so figured I had enough to get me well past there.
First time that I was driving that a vehicle ran out of petrol. Many are in that lot with low amounts of fuel but this is my first that completely cut out on me. Just glad it happened there than on the highway. Just added some interest to the day!

The Bronco was picked up from the dealer yesterday and to my surprise I got a call this evening with about half an hour notice that it was about to be delivered.

When will you black out the trim / badges and lug nuts (for the next owner to enjoy)?😂

You must have led a charmed life. No wait, you have said before that your parents were fairly affluent? That would do it, I suppose. I ran out of gas when I was a teenager more times than I care to remember. Coming up with a $1 bill to put 3.5 gallons of gas in the car was a big deal back when I was 14 and 15. By the time I was 16, I was working construction in the summers and could afford a full tank of gas, which was a very nice feeling.

Ran the Mav through the touchless wash this afternoon after going hiking, and then added some tire shine. There is still dirt on the rocker panels :/ , but it otherwise turned out pretty well. 4,000 miles and counting!

Took my wife’s car to the shore this weekend. I haven’t driven it for awhile. Let’s just say it needs some work.

@corvette - The Maverick looks great. My Jeep is filthy. Not “cool Jeep filthy,” just dirty from lack of being washed.

Met @breld at the Acura store. Test drove a 2023 MDX Advance and a 2022 MDX Type-S.

The Type-S was certainly faster, and had a slightly stiffer ride (due, I'm sure, to the 21" wheels compared to the 19" on the Advance). Otherwise, they were about the same.

Not sure where he's going with this, but I'm sure he will keep us updated...

Yes, it's tree pollen season, and what a mess that makes. I washed both cars yesterday, and by this afternoon they have a fine film of tree pollen on them again. Give it 2 or 3 days, it will be a thick layer.

@corvette, that is a nice looking truck you have there, no question about it.

Well, I hope it isn't to swap a MB wagon for an MDX. That would be tragic.

    No, nothing to reveal. :)

Just considering the usual SUV candidates…you know, MDX, GC 4xe, GV80, Telluride. Same old list everyone cross shops. :D

I'm jealous I don't have a cool station wagon. And I'll be damned, if I did have one, that I'd be looking for a plebian SUV to replace it.

same. our CUV is fine but if I could find a cool wagon like that if we were going to replace it, I would do it. The wife, might be a tougher sell.

My wife says I have to get rid of it…we need more space for the kids.

Wait…that’s a total lie. She loves wagons and our youngest is 18 and heading off to college soon.
