I'll tell you one thing I've learned is the value of buying CPO.

The CPO warranty saved us quite a few dollars on our 1997 528i; it had an early build date and it suffered from the usual teething problems of a first year car. That said, we never made a CPO claim on our 2004 X3- and it was also a first year model. Go figure.

Was going to fold down my rear seats, so I could transport my son's skis to the shop, to have them re-fitted to his new boots...

Found out I have a pass-through with an attached ski sack!

realized I haven't had my Accord in for service for a long time. So I pulled out the file, and turns out it was exactly 10 months ago (4/1) last time it was at the dealer for an oil change.

But since I have only put on about 4,200 miles since then, I might be safe for a few more weeks!

once it warms up and i can get the crap washed off the car, I will have to run it over. Actually, next time I get a cheap oil change coupon I will run it over!

I've really liked Schomp's approach for years, though this happens to be the first purchase I've actually made there.

I've got a work buddy who has a late 90's Civic purchased from Schomp, and he swears by them. Raves about the level of service all the time.

I also like that the salesperson handled the entire transaction from beginning to end. We simply sat in his office and he brought all the paperwork for the purchase and financing to us.

Interesting. The Schomp MINI showroom, being in such a small building, doesn't have "offices", per se. Everybody is in the same room (sales, service, financing) with different desks. We had to walk maybe 20' from the salesman's desk to the desk of the finance person.

I appreciate your breakdown of the process. I'm hoping that I'll get the chance to avail myself of it at some point later this year. The ION gets paid off in June - earlier, if I can continue to send a bit extra along with each monthly payment - and then I can start looking in earnest.

However, having said that, my inner Scrooge is starting to make an appearance, and having the extra money available is causing me to rethink what I may want to do with it. Like so many on this board (andre and fin), the thought of starting up another car payment is weighing heavily on me.

Not that I expect much sympathy or advise of restraint on this board. Maybe I'll wait until next winter, when prices are down again, to do something.

Ouch! No fun to have a problem that can't be diagnosed.

Having some odd issues with the ION - getting random warning lights that go away if I turn the car off and on again. First was the ABS light, then the Parking Brake light.

    Not worried - yet.

how old is the battery? Sometimes on their way out, even though they start the car they can run a little low on volts and cause some strange electrical glitches.

Put an old plate or other non-absorbant item where it leaks. Then you have a better chance to get it analyzed. It could be water that is getting trapped in a space or some small piece of road debris that collects moisture.

My friends and I did that to a cocky kid back in the late '70s. He was bragging about the badass engine he had built for his Chevelle so we would go over to the burger joint he worked at and pour a small puddle of used oil under the motor. Drove him nuts!

Years ago, you could get what were called "whistle bombs",

You unhooked a spark plug and the whistle bomb went between the spark plug and the plug wire.

When the car was started, a LOUD whistle started up like a Piccolo Pete. This was followed by a big puff of smoke and a loud explosion!

They were SO cool. We hooked one up to a nasty woman math thecher's Corvair. I didn't get to watch the fun but the guys how did sid it was beyond priceless!

Ah, today's cars all have inside hood releases and inaccesable spark plugs so we can't have the fun we once had!

Sounds like the kid with the Chevelle could have used a whistle bomb!

Things did not go as planned. The last 2 days have been crazy. We arrived Monday night to pick up the Acadia only to find the general manager decided to change the deal by $2k. We found this out after we waited for an hour, so we left and came home without the car obviously.

Tuesday I went to Anchorage to get some groceries and let my salesguy know I wasn't going to buy the MDX. Back home late last night, I stayed off the computer.........still no car of course.

Back to Anchorage today, we purchased a 2011 Honda Pilot EX-L in Polished Metal with black leather. At first I felt like I settled and wasn't thrilled about it, but hubby wasn't backing down, he wanted to save the $12k over the MDX.

He left and went home, I took delivery of the Pilot. By the time I finished running errands and headed home I was THRILLED with Pilot! It drives just like my old one, absolutely wonderful car. We ended up with a very fair deal on it.

Funny thing is this Pilot had 3 miles on it just like my 07 did when I bought it. They are so similar its almost scary.

I plan on having an ipod adaptor, HIDs, and vent shades installed next week. Need to order some husky liners too.

So there you have it guys, I didn't get eaten by a polar bear and I didn't buy an expensive luxury SUV I don't need.

not a whole lot of difference between an EX-L pilot and a non-tech MDX. other than price.

I can't wait to get to the autoshow this weekend to scope out the new Fiat. You can get a sport with moonroof and sirius for a sticker of $18,700. That is not too shabby, considering how well equipped the sport is already.

really curious to see how roomy it is for me up front. I assume the back seat will be nothing more than a parcel shelf. I won't have any non-driving kids much longer anyway, so in a few years when I could probably do it, it will just be me, the wife and the lab!)

It's funny how things work out.

With only 3 miles, it doesn't sound like they give theri cars much of a PDI. We had to drive them at least ten miles to make sure everything was perfect. You should be OK though.

I never could understand why anyone would pay 5000.00 more for an MDX much less 12,000! There really isn't much difference at all between them and the MDX's call for premimum gas!

We purchased hubby's 09 Civic from the same dealer/salesguy as this Pilot and it had a whopping 2 miles on it. Now he's closing in on 70k fast and have yet to have a problem.

I prefer to not have many miles on a new car when I get it, seem to have better luck with them that way. Most new cars up here if they aren't on the lot for test drives have 3-5 miles on them.

I love my Honda/Acura salesguy, he's awesome, have known him for about 6 years. Going to take him a box of chocolate next week when I go back to Anchorage.

The only flaw I noticed this Pilot has is the protective 3M plastic they had added on to it has a bubble, I showed my salesguy and he said if it gets any worse they'll replace it. Other then that not a scratch or a ding.

Now to buy it a bunch of cool accessories!

Yes they are much better. Not perfect though, the only seats I've found that were perfect belonged to a Volvo XC90 and hubby shot that down fast. They are much softer then the prev gen Pilot and the lumbar isn't as intrusive. Have put about 100 miles on the Pilot with no pain, so that's a good sign.

I'm sure your Pilot is fine but they are short cutting the PDI.

They are susposted to drive them at least 10 miles to check for certain functions, vibrations etc and make sure everything is perfect.

99 times out of 100, they won't find anything but things do show up.

    Time is money, I suppose.

I ordered a new set of tires for the Altima today--Pirelli P4 Four Seasons. The factory Continentals have 4-5/32" average left on them, but they're getting a little uncomfortable in the rain, and they haven't worn evenly (I'll need an alignment). Consumer Reports and the Tire Rack reviews like this model, and the price can't be beat.

Got them from Discount Tire Direct for $88 a piece, free shipping. Tire Rack's price on them just shot up by about $20 per tire (and no free shipping), so I thought I should go ahead and order them before Discount Tire raises their price as well. I also ordered the TPMS rebuild kit for $3 per wheel. I'm guessing the tire shop will have this and charge me a flat fee for parts and labor anyway, but it's a cheap way to be prepared.

I once sold an '04 Vibe after 30 months of ownership and 27k miles. Part of it was 'cuz I paid $14 OTD for it and got $12,400 when I sold it...rebates, GM card etc. I figured bragging rights for life, so why not?

Replaced it with a bunch of hoopties -- 85 Datsun truck, '96 Millenia, ... then bought a brand-new 07 (06?) Silverado work truck, drove it for 9 months, sold it -- same numbers: $14 to get, $12,500 to sell -- bought an '86 Conversion van, drove it half a year and 2,000 miles sold it and bought an '07 Vibe in September 2007. I've been clean since but it's fun while it lasts.

However, I'm too cheap to play musical cars in $30k+ territory. I also live two miles from work, so I can do whatever and it's gonna be OK. AK is different I believe.

What I'm trying to say: We're not crazy in CCBA-land, just a little different from the other kids...

    Cheers -Mathias

I was wondering the same thing. no, they aren't much different.

Powertrain wise, no they aren't different at all, only thing I have noticed besides the ECO thing it does, is the stability control and traction control aren't anywhere near as intrusive as they were on my 07. My 07 would cut the throttle so sharply it would nearly send you forward, could get rather dangerous in traffic if I was trying to pull out on to the highway. I knew it though and it didn't bother me.

Now size and seats........TOTALLY different. The '11 Pilot is longer and wider then the 07, parking in the garage is a challange now. The seats are really nice, so far no issues with my back and I've logged almost 300 miles since last night. Also they fixed the little gripes I had with my 07, so to quote my hubby last night......its just like the 07 Pilot, only better.

I orginally sold my 07 because of the seats and I was going to buy a new pickup truck........then I found the 95 Ford and well, the rest is history, lol.

We just purchased a set of snow tires for the 328xi. We thought we would get through the next couple of months here in Denver on the stock tires, but with the summer tire option on the 3, my fiance was slipping around pretty easily on the mere few inches of snow that dropped this afternoon.

So, run-flat snow tires in a 225/45/17 size did not come cheap, but she should be much more secure for the rest of this season and future winters.

I can never resist following up to see how a trade-in is listed.

So, $16,500 trade value on our Insight, and keep in mind the BMW was at a no-haggle price, so shouldn't have affected the trade. The Insight is listed at $18,642 at the BMW dealership. Strikes me as a really low mark-up. But certainly makes me feel good that we got "all the money" out of that trade.

if you don't like run flats, put on normal tires and get a spare.

not sure about the 3 series, but I know the prior generation (dame edna) 5 series has a tire well. Positive, because my BIL has a 2007ish 550, which came with RFs. After he got it home, first time he detailed it he looked in the trunk, and it turned out that it also came with a spare tire (And not fure, but I think it was a full size one). So needless to say, when they wore out, he replaced with 1/2 the price normal tires!

I also know a guy with a Mini S, that hated the rock hard ride, so he put on non-run flats, and just got a donut in a tire bag that he keeps behind the driver's seat (sitting in the rear passanger footwell). He doesn't normally have back seat riders, and pretty sure that seat is dead space anyway (barely enough room for the donut, forget about legs!)

How funny! I did the exact same thing with the Vibe's twin, the Matrix! They were even almost the same model years - my 'Trixes were '03 and '07 - and like you I would not try such sport in any price range higher than the mid-teens where I was.

Unlike you however, the second Matrix is now history as well, replaced by my second-ever Subaru Outback Sport, which after 21 months definitely has a good shot at being a long-term keeper (my first OBS lasted 5 years and 4 months with me - I am hoping to exceed that with the new one). :-)

Great choice; they hold the value pretty well, and frankly SUVs are more usable when they are not super lux-ed out. I say this owning an X3, but the Forester get's all the bike/running/camping/home depot duty. If I only had one car it would be the Subaru.

Plus this make/model lasted three years for ya .. and that's about as good as it gets!
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,337
No tire well in the 3-series. There's a "well" under the trunk floor, but not large enough to hold a spare tire.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,211
That's right... no place for a spare...

Also, my '06 has the old-style TPMS that works off the ABS sensors... No sensors in the valve stem.... also a bonus...

I might just keep this car forever!!

I agree. I am very happy with this new Pilot, its so much better then the 07 was.

On Monday the Honda dealer is installing premium running boards and door vent shades. Later in the week the audio shop the dealer uses is installing an ipod jack for the stereo and HIDs. My husky liners should be in next week as well.

I really felt like I settled and was NOT a happy camper when I signed the papers on the Pilot. Fast forward 2 days and 350 miles, I'm wondering WHY I even looked at any other SUV. The Pilot fits so well for me and the best part is.......I don't miss the 07 any longer.

I said it back in 07 and I'll say it again......this is a vanilla ice cream I can eat everyday for the next several years. I think the Pilot is my cure for CCBing!

What I find interesting on a very personal level of interest, is the improvement in seating from an 07 to an 11. Did you purchase the 07 new or used? Funny the same thing happened to me here in CT. I opted for the m-sport package and it simply never dawned on me to see if they were summer tires. I just got out of an Infiniti with 19" wheels wrapped in all seasons. I figured that every x-drive BMW came with all seasons. Then the first snow hit and I was sideways and almost totaled my car two weeks after I got it.

I found someone on eBay that sells brand new BMW wheel and tire packages. I ended up getting an OEM set with winter tires about 1/2 the price BMW dealers were quoting and he was located in CT. Without them I didn't take the car out of the garage.

I did purchase the 07 brand new on July 13, 2007 (yes, that was friday the 13th) with 3 miles on it. It was fine for a while, but then I reinjured my back, after that I found the seat to be very hard and uncomfortable.

The 2011 Pilot has much softer seats and they have reduced the horrible lumbar that the 07 had, plus added a really nice power lumbar adjustment. The 07 had a miserable lever that was very hard to adjust.

The other major improvement I've seen is the seat heaters actually get really warm, my 07 would barely warm up, less and less as time went on.

I did notice tonight that the starting issue is still there. Without thinking I put the key in and turned it right away, yup, same hard starting issue the 07 had. Just have to remember to let it find the chip before I turn the key.
