Any chance the hybrid could wear the Euro 5 door hatch styling? There were some rumblings it would look different than the main stream civic sedan and I note that the Prius is a hatch.
A hatchback would cut into sales of the upcoming Honda Fit anyway. It wouldn't be a wise move to introduce a Civic Hatchback in the US. Too much product overlap.
Well I wonder if I will fit inside a Honda fit (at 6' 4" it seems unlikely).
I do wish Honda would offer a straight wagon a la Subaru Legacy based off Accord. Legacy is a good car and I own an outback but wish for the interior space of my Accord in a wagon.
Maybe the fit will suprise me -- Mini coopers fit drivers up to 6' 9"!
Honda has the AIRWAVE, based on the FIT but a little larger. No word whether or not it will join the FIT next year in the US. I like it. Comes with a 1.5 and CVT.
There are at least two different models shown in the four photos shown on the "Better MY06 Civic pictures" link. The two red coupes may be the same car shot from different angles, but the two silver sedans aren't even the same model, let alone the same car. At the very least, they are different pre-production concepts. Check out the side view mirrors... on one car they are mounted on the body, on the other they are incorporated into the side windows. Also, notice the large air vents in the front fascia on the coupe versus the smooth fascia on the sedan. Of course, sedans and coupes possess certain unique design qualities within a model line, but those differences don't usually extend to the placement of mirrors or very different front ends. Anyway, they all look nice and are a big improvement over today's Civic. It would just be nice to know which picture is the real deal.
I still think the side mirrors on the red coupe are notched into the front windows but are mounted on the doors on the sedans. And the front ends are pretty different. Your right about the mirrors being the same on both sedans. My color perception isn't all that great so both sedans look pretty much the same to me, but let's hope we do get to choose from more than the very limited palatte typically offered by Honda. And again, I don't really care how the mirrors are mounted or which front end we get; it's all an improvement over the current Civic model. (Personally, I like the looks of the front end on the red coupe.)
Well, it should do that, shouldn't it? Since it will be the newest car in its class and will probably be at about the same price range as the Mazda3. If the new Civic doesn't set a new standard in its class, Honda is in BIG trouble with the Civic, given the strength of the competition, both current models like the Mazda3 and New Jetta and upcoming models in the next year or so.
A loaded MY06 Civic EX will probably sticker at close to $21-22K (with leather, XM radio, navi & maybe HID headlamps). We were interested in the MY06 Accord EX with navi, but the new Civic may be more than enough for us. I wonder if the new Civic will get the double wishbone setup like the Accord ?
Honda is in BIG trouble with the Civic, given the strength of the competition, both current models like the Mazda3 and New Jetta and upcoming models in the next year or so.
VW has priced the Jetta beyond the Civic/Mazda3 segment and close to the Honda Accord/Camry. I dont think Honda has VW worries at this point of time!
First, you misquoted me. I did not start a sentence with "Honda is in BIG trouble with the Civic...." The way you clipped out the text completely changed the meaning of what I said.
Second, the New Jetta starts at under $18k nicely equipped--in the same ballpark as today's Civic EX and Mazda3s. Both the Mazda3 and New Jetta are way ahead of the current Civic. So Honda is the one who has some catching up to do. If they stumble out of the gate with the '06 Civic like they did with the '01 model, they will have some trouble keeping up in this tough market.
funny how all the info says the SI will have 200 hp, 16-valve, etc but it doesn't even mention what engine it would be ? V6 or 1.8L I4, or 2.0L or something else ? also what engine and power wll the non-si civic have ? would it match the scion tC and mazda 3 s (that is >150 hp) ?
Also how will the SI with its 200 hp be dfferentiated from the RSX/S ? if it's so similar than would it also cost like the type S ?
But that model does not have many options whatsoever. ESP is like the only option the VE has...
It has Side airbags, ABS and all that stuff standard (as will the 06 Civic)
But you can't get a sunroof.... alloys, etc. which may not mean much, but I think I'd choose a Civic EX over a Jetta VE with no options, no alloys, etc. But then again, I'm a sunroof freak (Live in South Carolina)
On top of that, according to some specs I have read, the Value ed. will only be 10-15 percent of sales.
A Jetta VE would be $18,515 ($19,590 with auto)
You'd have to move up to the $20K 2.5 model to get any of the features of the Civic EX or optional features of the Mazda3 s.
A Jetta 2.5 with Pkg 1 (Sunroof, heated front seats, and sate. radio) is $22965 ($24,040 with automatic)
Now true enough the Jetta has more safety features, more equipment (trip computer, etc.) and a 6spd automatic transmission and also more hp,
but for $24K for the most popular model??? I don't think so. The 2.5 will be the bulk of sales and this is with the cheapest pkg available. With pkg 2, the Jetta can get up over $26K!
We are talking Nissan Altima 3.5SE, Honda Accord EXV6, Toyota Camry XLEV6 prices.. against a Civic???
My 2005 Nissan Altima with Conv. Plus pkg (sunroof, power driver's seat and other options) was LESS than that! (about $22K after all work)
By comparison the current Civic EX goes for $18,275 (19,075 w/ auto)
The EX special edition goes for $18,475 (19,275 w/auto) It includes special alloys, spoiler, CD6 with MP3.
And these models do include the side airbags, not sure about curtains.
So that puts the Jetta at a $4965 difference from it and the Civic.
Because the Jetta Value Edition is not going to be a great seller, and you cant get the sunroof feature on it either.
Furthermore, for the 06 model year, the 2.5 model looses its automatic climate control in conjunction with the 2.0t models.
The Jetta that I used was the Jetta 2.5 with Pkg 1 which has leatherette standard (some may prefer it over cloth) but it is not the pkg 2. model.
The cost of the 6spd automatic also played a huge role in the cost of the Jetta ($1075) but that's what VW charges so...
So in other words, by most standards and by VW's own submission, the VW Jetta really doesn't compete with the Civic, Corolla types but does go after the higher Mazda3. This could very well change with the new Civic, but right now VW considers the Jetta comparable with the TSX, Volvo S40, Mazda3, and get this...BWM 3-series (LOL)
But you are right, you can get a basic Jetta VE for around the price of the Civic EX, but I am willing to bet they won't make many Jetta VEs since they predict only 10-15 percent of its sales will be VEs..and the 2.5 model is the big seller so far.
And with the Redesign Civic, I don't think Honda will raise prices by much (maybe $500-$1000) if that.
So I think the VW Jetta isn't a direct competitor, but the Mazda3 surely is...
And like I said, Civic has nothing to worry about because the Jetta isn't doing all that great right now anyway and they simply don't compete that well.
Even the last generation Jetta was considered a step or two above the Civic, Corolla, Spectra, Elantra, and especially the lowly Sentra (somebody call Nissan and tell them to redesign this thing already)
So that puts the Jetta at a $4965 difference from it and the Civic.
Not sure where you get the nearly $5000 difference. First, we are talking about the '06 Civic, which is supposed to go "up-market" from the current Civic, and will add standard equipment such as side curtains and ABS across the line. So your estimate of a $500-1000 increase for '06 is probably pretty good.
Second, the Jetta VE goes for about $18k, as does the current Civic EX. Yes, the Jetta VE doesn't have a moonroof or alloys, but those are not deemed essential by some buyers (like me). Consider also that the Civic doesn't have these features that are standard on even the Jetta VE:
* adjustable lumbar support * heated mirrors with side blinker lights * active head restraints * side curtains * traction control * 10-speaker sound system * anti-theft alarm for doors, hood, trunk lid, radio, and starter * telescoping steering column
The '06 Civic will get some of these features, such as side curtains.
Finally, many of the features and options in the higher-line Jettas are not available on Civics at any price: automatic climate control (HCH has this I think), trip computer with compass, rear center armrest and trunk pass-through, heatable front seats, ESP, rain-sensing wipers, leather interior, wood trim, Homelink, power front seats, rear sunshade, and 6-speed automatic. So I don't think it's fair to compare a car that has all those features to one that does not. I think the Jetta VE-to-Civic comparison is more appropriate, based on price and features. I think buyers will cross-shop the '06 Civic with the Jetta, and the Mazda3. The Jazz/Fit will become the direct competition for the lower-end small cars.
VW Canada has repeated several times that they view the Jetta's competition as the Camry/Accord! This approach is going to backfire for VW!
Having said that, I dont follow the standard/option pricing in the USA since it has no relevance to me! But I can tell you something about Canadian prices.
The new Jettas in Canada sell at about the same price range as Accords(depending on options).
I dont know what the new pricing for Civics will be, but I am sure they will resemble the pricing we are seeing today. If that is the case Civics are compelling value compared to VW offerings. The real competition for Civic is the Corolla and Mazda3.
So what does VW Canada say that the competition for the Passat is? Lexus and Acura?
Jettas are in the same price range as Accord 4-cylinders in the U.S. too. Except for the Jetta VE. There can only be one reason for the existence of the VE, IMO: to give VW something to compete with the likes of Civics and Mazda3s.
Do the same thing I did, and go over to VW.com and Honda.com and compare prices. True enough, the new Civic will probably be more expensive than the 05s (by about $800 I am guessing), but that's still $4200 more.. and the Civic will probably gain the tilt/telescopic wheel, there is talk of MP3 players, and maybe even a power driver's seat, Navi system (Which the Jetta was not equipped with) and leather upholstery on EX models, and perhaps automatic climate control. I expect in the end the price difference between the Civic EX with leather (if they make it) and the Jetta 2.5 will be about $3.5K.
And furthermore, once the 06 Jetta rolls around, it will LOOSE (dual-zone) automatic climate control, the power passenger's seat, and the wood trim because the 2.0t model will be here and the options will be switched around. (per VWvortex.com) That's a game VW loves to play. And I don't know if you thought I implied it, but the Jetta I used did not include the leather.. it has leatherette standard... but the VE model doesn't. So a fully loaded Jetta 2.5 would be $26.5K and some change...
Point is VW doesn't WANT the Jetta to compete with the Civic, Corolla, Mazda3. If they did, the price of the VE would be cheaper and you'd be able to get one with more equipment below $20K. VW wants people to get the Mazda3's cousin... the Volvo S40. They are priced similarly, as well as the TSX.
VW themselves are moving their cars up market. Have you seen the Phaeton, Toureg, new Passat and new Jetta? VW positions the Jetta has a car between the Civic and Accord (but cost about the same or MORE than the Accord) This should be obvious, considering that VW's base Jetta cost slightly MORE than a loaded Civic, especially if you get both cars with automatic transmissions.
They think the next Passat is going to compete with the Acura TL, Infiniti G35, Lexus ES330, and get this.. the BMW 325i.
Have you even seen the options that will be available on the new Passat (bi-level xenons, laser cruise control, electronic brakes on the dash, power rear sunshades)
Also, Did I NOT mention that the VW was better equipped overall, I think I did. So you pointing that out is just you repeating what I've already said. Especially the 2.5, GLI and 2.0t models. You'll be able to get HIDS on the GLI and 2.0t.
But most folks on a budget couldn't care less about the 10 speaker sound system, and ALL Honda radios have anti-theft systems (if they are stolen they don't work). As well as alarm systems with that keyless entry.
And with the way young folks mod cars (not all of us) they'd probably buy an aftermarket stereo anyway. The Civic is by far one of the most modded cars for you people anyway...
Volkswagen is trying to move upscale (strange) IMO, but that's what they are trying to do. They should let Audi take care of that market... but oh well. As a matter of fact, I mentioned that the previous Jetta was considered more upscale than the Civic, Corolla crowd. VW positions the cars that way. Motortrend did a comparison of the Jetta GLI, Mazda6s and Altima 3.5SE...
Would you find an abundant amount of REAL wood trim in the Civic, Corolla, Mazda3? No, because those cars aren't trying to position themselves as such, and prices reflect this. I bet if you do see wood in the Civic, it would be fake.. like in the Corolla LE.
YES, the Value Edition overall has more safety equipment than the Civic, but to the average buyer, what do you think they'll choose, a Civic EX or a Volkswagen Jetta VE. Chances are it will be the Civic... because A) it has more of what most people on budgets favor the Volkswagen is plain ole expensive C) It doesn't have an expensive look for the price tag. D) Its Civic is slightly cheaper and it has alloy wheels, a sunroof and if you get the SE pkg for $200 more, you get CD6, MP3 player. These may not seem essential to you, but apparently the extra's the VE has aren't going to be either because VW themselves are limiting this model compared to the 2.5 model. And as I have said, and you didn't reply to, the VE is NOT going to be a big seller. Which goes to put your theory out.. because if the Jetta were to compete with the Civic, more VEs would be made. Even with the last generation, the GLS model (similar to the 2.5) was the better seller. E) and most importantly, it doesn't have HONDA's reputation for reliability and the last generation Jetta was one of the most unreliable cars they made...
The Jetta VE will be what the Accord DX and Camry Standard are to Honda and Toyota, starter models that few people buy and that just make the Jetta look like a bargain. I know if I was in the market and it was between a basic Jetta VE and the Civic EX.
The point is that this new Civic is aimed to compete with cars like the Mazda3, Corolla, Elantra, new Sentra, etc. I bet the next Sentra will have leather, and other more upscale features, but it still won't compete with the Jetta per se.
YES, compact cars overall are moving more upscale, but they aren't quite on the level of cars like the Volvo S40, Acura TSX and Audi's own A4 2.0t. Volkswagen is aiming for that market for some reason because a fully loaded 2.0t Jetta will cost you over $30K. I've priced one out.
So the $24K price still stands because if someone goes out looking for a car and see's how the Jetta is equipped and then see the Civic and Corolla with what they see as "similar" content (because most folks want care if its got more airbags. 10 speakers, etc.) they won't get a basic Jetta over the Civic EX, LX, etc. That's why VW isn't making many of them...
I wouldn't be surprised if VW stopped making them all together.
The new Civic may compete with the Jetta to you, but to most folks, they haven't competed since the introduction of the Jetta IV.
If sunroof is not one of your "must have" items, then compare the Jetta VE to Civic LX. I think the price gap widens even more when you compare Jetta VE to Civic LX, in favor of the Civic.
Why would I want to compare a 115 hp LX to the 150 hp Jetta? I wouldn't, for example, compare the Civic LX to the Mazda3s because of the huge disparity in power and features. Also there is a huge disparity in equipment between the Civic LX and Jetta, as has been already discussed.
As for maximillion's earlier comment:
VW wants people to get the Mazda3's cousin... the Volvo S40.
Why in the world would VW want someone to buy a car from Ford Motor Company? If that is the way VW thinks, they are in a lot of trouble!!
...what I meant to say was that VW wants people to compare the Jetta with the likes of the Volvo S40, Acura TSX, etc.
Keen observer..very smart. I saw at after I posted it, but figured you'd get my point..
Doesn't Ford have at least like 23 percent of Mazda too???
The Mazda6, Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr are all on the same platform..the all share the same Duratec engine (though Mazda did some engineering for its version)
And the Volvo has received some variable reviews, but its not selling all that great...so that makes me wonder why VW thinks they can do any better????
And on top of that, like I said earlier, most folks in that class won't care about horsepower.
They'll be like "Dang this car has power windows, door locks, mirrors and a CD player, and the Vw does too, but the VW cost WAY more" They won't be caring about the all the safety stuff the cars have..unless of course they are informed customers like you and I, Backy...LOL
I pay attention to stuff like that, but most young folks who buy these cars don't care.
I had a friend of mine graduate from HS, and I asked her what she wanted in a car..she said "All I want is a CD player and a sunroof." She didn't even care about ABS..but she got an Accord, which had it standard.
Comparing equivalently equipped models and stating they are equivalent in price and therefore in the same segment is just a numbers game.
A Honda Accord equipped with the exact features as a MB240 or a Acura TL may cost as much as a MB or Acura.(this is hypothetical because Honda Accord may not have the same standard/options as premiums models)
Does that mean a Accord should be considered in the same market segment as a MB240 or a TL? I dont think so!
Yes, I think so. So do the buyers I've ran into in these discussions who have purchased Accords--albeit loaded ones, even Hybrids--instead of cars like a MB, BMW, or Acura. It's funny what vehicles people cross-shop sometimes, e.g., the guy who was trying to decide between a Prius and a Mini Cooper.
We're fairly well off-topic in here. Let's stick to what we can share about the Civic/Civic Si rather than speculating on why someone might purchase another model.

Has anybody seen the pics of the Civic's Two tier dash board???
Seems like one of those tiers is in the center.
Some folks believe the gauges may be centered this time around... I get the feeling it may hold radio, climate control information.
It doesn't hold the Navi because they Navi (as shown) because the Navi is below the highest tier and beside the lower one.
That should be interesting.
I hope they offer leather on this car. By the time the Civic gets ready for a facelift, I should be about ready to finish my master's and I'll be able to get another car.
But if anything ever happens to my Altima, I don't know what I'd get this time around..
So far it seems like the volks at other websites aren't feeling the new Civic (but most of those folks haven't like ANY Civic) but I actually favor the newest model and think it looks better than the current one. I also like its round, stubbiness compared to the tall boxy look of the current one.
I can't wait to see these cars in person and test drive the EX Sedan and Coupe.
And also, I hope they FINALLY offer leather and a power driver's seat (doubtful)
What are you talking about? You should research something before you go and shoot your mouth off. The Accord and TL CAN seat 3 people in the back seat. I have three people in the back seat of my Accord all the time. They say that they are quite comfortable back there. I have even sat in the back seat and was somewhat shocked at the amount of room back there.
The MSRP difference is $400 on a 2005. Of course the Scion buyers are paying MSRP while the Civic people are paying invoice to a $200 under invoice. So in 2005, the Civic EX is actually about $1700 less than the tC. After the first few months, the 2006 Civic will be at invoice or a little over. Even with a 1k increase they will be paying $3-700 less than the tC. Yes, what is really paid for the vehicle matters not what the MSRP is on the sticker. The Civic may even get decent gas mileage unlike the tC. So you can drop that pipe now.
The new and improved Civic hybrid sounds very impressive!
For the first time a Honda can ride solely with a electrical motor at low speeds, similar to the Prius. It will provide a 20% jump in output. And most importantly the hybrid system will cost 30% less than the existing model.
the power drivers seat on the EX would be nice, but don't hold your breath. The Accord EX doesn't even get one I don't think (you need to go up to the EX-L), although maybe that is just the passenger side?
It will be real interesting to see what does show up on this car, since I think that will send a clear indication of what Honda wants to be in the future (or if they can relaim their past glory).
Ummm...shmmummm...... instead of blabbering around here it would be appreciated if someone can give an educated estimate about serious questions like what kind of engines will be offered in the 06 civic. I understand that this information has not been anounced by Honda, but it can't be that hard to speculate based on their existing available engines. So if anyone can comment if it's likely to be a 1.8L or 2.0L for example and the ballpark hp for the non-si version ?
New Engine info is provided by link on my post #346.
ANSWER: One of them will be a 1.8Litre Engine.
The new 1.8-liter engine is 11 pounds lighter than the 1.7-liter engine that powers the current Civic, thanks largely to the use of fewer components -- something Honda has promised to pursue to lower costs.
should be a nice motor, plenty peppy and excellent fuel economy. Of course, the "more is never enough" will moan about not having a V6, and why doesn't the LX have 220 HP, but the real world results should be just fine.
The Si is supposed to have a 200 HP 2.0 I believe.
Ummm....shmmmummm...most of the stuff I mentioned has pretty much been confirmed by way of pics..except for the power driver's seat..which we won't get.
ANYWAY..from what I have seen over at a website that shares the name of Honda's engine technology.
The new Civic will get a 1.8L capable of 138hp and 120 something lb/ft of torque.
That engine is rumored to be the base engine...but we know for a fact that this is the Civic's base engine..speculation I think not.
And futhermore, the features I mentioned have been thrown out as serious rumors for the next Civic.
From the one picture we have of the interior (and yes we have ONE), a Navigation system will be available and leather is rumored with the car going more upscale this time around. Speculation? Check out my comment about the Engines for the answer...None..we have seen it from the picture.
Two tier dash it does have, because we have seen pics of it...From the side...
As far as what the Civic will have..
It will have ABS/Side airbags/Side curtains standard...we know that.(That's Honda's new strategy) "Safety for Everyone"
It will be bigger and have a base engine with 138-140 hp...EX is rumored to have 160, while the SI gets the 2.0 with 200 hp.
Anything else you want to know???
You've got to wait :P But well will find out toward the end of this month and the beginning of the next one...
thanks, this is very much appreciated. So the base engine is 1.8L with ~140 hp, and I'm guessing the EX engine will be larger based on what you said. It better be above 150 hp to compete with the Mazda 3 S and Scion tC, which are in the same price range around $17-18K. But those cars have 2.3L, and 2.4L engines so I wonder if Honda is going to match that. Any ideas ?
My other important question is about the differentiation between the Civic and RSX, especially the Si compared to the RSX-S. Is the Si going to cost as much as the RSX-S ?!?!? if not, will it not cannibalize the RSX sales ?
So you can drop that pipe now. Umm.,, lets see. Scion tC: (CarsDirect Price: $16,515) +17 inch wheels +40lft torque +1-2 second faster 0-60 +dual moonroofs +Reclining Rear Seats +Knee Air Bag
Civic Ex SplEd : (CarsDirect Price: $16,288) +8mpg +6 CD changer -15 inch wheels -bland styling.
You have to be honda saleman or seriously high to think Civic is the better deal.

* adjustable lumbar support
* heated mirrors with side blinker lights
* active head restraints
* side curtains
* traction control
* 10-speaker sound system
* anti-theft alarm for doors, hood, trunk lid, radio, and starter
* telescoping steering column
Jettas are in the same price range as Accord 4-cylinders in the U.S. too. Except for the Jetta VE. There can only be one reason for the existence of the VE, IMO: to give VW something to compete with the likes of Civics and Mazda3s.
VW positions the Jetta has a car between the Civic and Accord (but cost about the same or MORE than the Accord)
This should be obvious, considering that VW's base Jetta cost slightly MORE than a loaded Civic, especially if you get both cars with automatic transmissions.
Chances are it will be the Civic... because
A) it has more of what most people on budgets favor
C) It doesn't have an expensive look for the price tag.
Now the Mazda3 is a completely different story.
If sunroof is not one of your "must have" items, then compare the Jetta VE to Civic LX. I think the price gap widens even more when you compare Jetta VE to Civic LX, in favor of the Civic.
As for maximillion's earlier comment:
VW wants people to get the Mazda3's cousin... the Volvo S40.
Why in the world would VW want someone to buy a car from Ford Motor Company? If that is the way VW thinks, they are in a lot of trouble!!

The new and improved Civic hybrid sounds very impressive!
For the first time a Honda can ride solely with a electrical motor at low speeds, similar to the Prius. It will provide a 20% jump in output. And most importantly the hybrid system will cost 30% less than the existing model.
That all sounds like good engineering to me!
The big unknown will be real world gas mileage?
It will be real interesting to see what does show up on this car, since I think that will send a clear indication of what Honda wants to be in the future (or if they can relaim their past glory).

ANSWER: One of them will be a 1.8Litre Engine.
The new 1.8-liter engine is 11 pounds lighter than the 1.7-liter engine that powers the current Civic, thanks largely to the use of fewer components -- something Honda has promised to pursue to lower costs.
Engine info.
The Si is supposed to have a 200 HP 2.0 I believe.

You've got to wait :P
But well will find out toward the end of this month and the beginning of the next one...
My other important question is about the differentiation between the Civic and RSX, especially the Si compared to the RSX-S. Is the Si going to cost as much as the RSX-S ?!?!? if not, will it not cannibalize the RSX sales ?
Umm.,, lets see.
