Those of you who have seen both, can you let me know which looks better in your opinion?

I know looks are subjective but would appreciate your opinion

IMO, silver exterior is better than slate green exterior BUT olive interior is way better than grey interior. So I had to decide which was more important to me......I went with the slate green/olive due in November. I'm glad I did because someone at my son's preschool is already driving a silver one! And I wanted to be the first to have one! haha At least now, it'll be a different exterior color.

When I inquired about the tow package a couple of weeks ago, my dealership quoted $937 if I remember correctly.

Actually saw a slate green last night. It was outside on the lot, not under lights so it was kinda dark, and the vans were wet (being as it was raining).

Anyway, it looked very much light/medium gray to me. Not buite battleship though. It seemed to be a flat color. There was a silver nearby (both shades actually), and to me they both looked nicer, probably because they had more shine or sparkle to them.

There was also a pair of Sage brush pearls in the row. That color looked real nice. It really does seem like charcoal, since I parked my Flint Mica Scion next to it (a dark gray/charcoaly metallic), and they looked almost identical in that light. It did lok greener inside on a Pilot though.

There was also a dark blue on the floor of the showroom. Not bad looking, but it's also a "flat" color. Doesn't really have much pizazz.

Still waiting to see Ocean Mist in person. From the pictures in the accessory brochure (all of which are of OM), I think it will be too light.

I'm just curious whether a trade-in was part of the deal ($1050 off MSRP). I recently purchased in Raleigh, NC (EX-L RES) at MSRP. I did get very close to KBB value for my trade, and got them to throw in (dealer installed) mud flaps. I would recommend any buyer ask to have some things thrown in if the dealer won't come off MSRP (like rear storage area liner, all-weather floor mats, bra, roof rack cross bars, etc.).

For reference, I was quoted Simonize System5 exterior protection and interior protection, all for $479. I would say the $1,295 for "paint protection" is outrageous. With the Simonize product, you get a guarantee against spotting from things like bird droppings, acid rain, etc., and for the interior against any stains...even Gatorade.

The 1050.00 off MSRP was at a dealer outside Dallas(90 miles). As for the trade,I am trading my acura MDX(02) for 25K.
    Total:32410.00-trade-1050.00 discount=6360.00+TTL
and no inventory tax,and only $50.00 doc fee.total being just under $7K walk-out.
The dealer has to trade one of theirs to another to get the Tafetta White.+-2-3 weeks. They will sell me accessories @ dealer installed cost.
I have heard of dealers taking up to $500 doc fees in DFW area.

Hi, Went today to check out 1 silver/black Touring (DVD and NAV as in Canada this is all one package) and it turns out the dealer was not able to answer the following question re: the DVD player operation. My oldest kid is 6, and not really able to operate the remote just now... the 2 others are 3 and 2... do the headphones are a big challenge...

    1) Can the sound of the movie play through the main speakers?
    2) We were not really able to get the DVD I brought playing (ran out out time + dealer ignorance). Is there a way to start/control a movie from the NAV screen or other dashboard located buttons?
    3) If an adult in the front row uses the remote, I suppose he can change tracks and so on, but how can you see the DVD menu?

    Thanks.

I was looking for advice. I like the new Honda Odyssey but I have been driving a SUV (92 ford explorer). Would I like the new Honda or should I buy another SUV. We have 3 sons and need room. Thanks for the help!
  • homer2005homer2005 Member Posts: 11
    1) Can the sound of the movie play through the main speakers?

YES - everyone can listen to the DVD over the main speakers, or you can listen to the radio on the speakers while the DVD sound is routed to the headphones (2 wireless and 3 wired jacks in back). You use the REAR CONTROL KNOB to select FRONT or REAR, and then select the source for each.

    2) We were not really able to get the DVD I brought playing (ran out out time + dealer ignorance). Is there a way to start/control a movie from the NAV screen or other dashboard located buttons?

I don't believe you can control DVDs from the NAV screen, but you can control movies from the front or rear.

    3) If an adult in the front row uses the remote, I suppose he can change tracks and so on, but how can you see the DVD menu?

You can't see the menu, unless you have a front passenger that can lean back while you drive, or you rely on your kids. Most movies may have some sort of previews or introduction, and then you can just press Play when the DVD reaches the main menu screen.

I also found the salesperson didn't know how to operate the RES, and in fact they hadn't even installed the RES fuse when I went to take delivery.

    Good luck!

I know you're all dying for an update on my rusty rear seat hinges. Well, American Honda decided the dealer was wrong, and that I deserved shiny new hinges on my new $32,000 vehicle after all. Imagine that...new means new again!

Fellow Honda buyers...Don't settle for being waived off by the service manager when you know you're right! Kudos to Honda for actually reviewing my complaint and taking swift action.

    Thank Homer2005.

What do you exactly mean by "you can control movies from the front"

    Thanks again.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
That's good. At least Honda solved the problem quickly, which benefits Honda and the owner of the car as it allows Honda to just get over the problem and it allows the owner to enjoy his/her new Honda.

Regarding the traffic monitoring system, it is Acura only. Exclusive to the Acura RL, actually. So, don't expect it on the Honda Odyssey any time soon.

Enjoying my 2005 odyssey but have a clicking noise every time the rear wiper swipes the window. It sounds like it makes the noise every time the motor turns on. Has anyone noticed this noise. PS. getting good gas mileage lowest was 21 best so far 26.7 MPG.

    david11-

Which model do you have? Is it with or without the VCM engine regarding your gas mileage?

jracine wrote: What do you exactly mean by "you can control movies from the front"

With the center REAR CONTROL knob set to "FRONT", select "DVD" (make sure the REAR is also set to DVD). Then you can press Play / Pause / Skip fwd or back (skips a chapter), and so on (from the front console). You can lock out the rear control panel (which also pops out as a wireless remote), and control movies exclusively from the front (e.g. if the kids are fighting over the remote...or I suppose if it gets lost). I have 3 kids, and I've found listening to the radio/CD while the kids watch a movie to be pure bliss (even though the sound from the front speakers is weak...not much low frequency response). As you probably know, the rear speakers turn off when you have different sources playing in front and back (the back audio is routed to the headphones in this case). When DVD sound is playing in the entire cabin, it sounds very good (considering you're in a van, driving down the highway). I haven't tried playing a DVD-Audio disc yet (I have some for my Acura TL), so I need to go check that out next.

    Hope this helps.

"Chubb said about half of U.S. households have experienced a flat tire in the last 12 months, and many drivers are reluctant to change a tire in bad weather, on heavily trafficked roads, or in areas perceived as unsafe. "And that's especially true if they have children in the car," said Chubb. "Women are three times more likely than men to continue driving on a flat tire."

Replacing PAX tires will cost about 10 percent more than regular tires, said Don Baldwin, Michelin's director of technical marketing. Vehicles have to be designed especially for use with the tires, so they are not available in the replacement parts market."

Having owned a 99 and 02 Ody I was impressed with this attempt.
still has the hard dash but overall very smooth and quiet. Drove an overpriced touring. Cannot justify the $4k extra expense on that. The EX-L with Nav and DVD is a better bargain overall and a few hundred less than touring alone. Touring PAX is so so value, power tail gate nice and better sound system but that much more?>
    Hard to justify.
Since production is 3x the 99 rate and the economy of 99 is far gone, Honda will find itself discounting before Christmas and I mean 1.5-2k off about anywhere.
Funny how the dealers are slow to see this as yes for a great van they will sell well to the newbe buyers for a few months. AFter that when inventory rises...
Also, I have seen many many tourings just sitting. Those w/o nav and dvd are not in demand. Why pay that much when EX L can be had for less with NAV and DVD. Marketing blunder but dealerw will soon not be ordering the touring alone.

My dealer had one of these as part of his first two vans. It is still on the lot (about a month now) and they have added an aftermarket DVD. I agree that the market for Touring without these features will be very weak.

My wife and I have debated EXL vs. Touring. We don't really want PAX, but my wife is only 5'
tall and the dash really protrudes a lot more than our Mecury Villager. In the EXL, she only has about an inch(!) between her knees and the dash. With the Touring adjustable pedals, she has about 2 inches. She raises the seat to full height and that means she has to be close to the dash to reach the pedals. Anybody else have this problem?

The dealer we went to this week showed us how the DVD options show up on the Nav screen. Most operations can be controlled via the screen, but I believe the best option is to get the movie going while you are parked. Some menus have so many selections that even pressing play will bring up another choice (widescreen or full)--so the best bet is to do it standing still.
We currently have a Pilot w/DVD(RES) and it's been great. I want to get the new Ody, but will look into options for adding speakers and sub as the stereo sound is very poor in the EXL. The Pilot isn't that great either, but in comparison, it wins over the Ody.
Your oldest child is 6, I bet he/she will be showing you how the system works in no time! ;-)

    Good point.
    MSRP for EX-L w/NAV+RES is $34,610
    Touring without NAV/RES is $35,010

Just one question. Has anyone heard of an aftermarket power rear hatch? My wife is making a big deal out of the Odyssey not having a power rear hatch.
  • majordadmajordad Member Posts: 43
Your wife was right. I think this was a marketing blunder just like the Sienna XLE's w/o the 8 seat option. Even the cheapest D&C van has the liftgate as an option. This is not an expensive needless feature, Moms and others who want the power doors also need the liftgate. Hopefully Honda will fix next year, but by then I'll be stuck with a unpowered EXL or a Sienna.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
I agree that Honda is stupid about keeping some small features exclusive to the Touring. (Power Pedals, Power Liftgate) but then again, Toyota is pretty stupid in keeping the eight passenger option from being combined with the AWD or the eight passenger combo being put on an XLE/XLE Limited model. And by the way, Nissan is stupid to keep the five speed automatic exclusive to the 3.5SE model.
  • indy93indy93 Member Posts: 97
Great information thanks. Can you show the DVD movie on both the front NAV screen and the rear DVD? I heard this is possible in the Sienna when parked. Urban legend?
  • indy93indy93 Member Posts: 97
    Here's the deal:

    EXL Nav/DVD $34,610.
            or
    Sienna XLE Ltd NAV/DVD $35,450.
            or
Sienna XLE Ltd AWD NAV/DVD $37,530.
            or
    Ody Touring NAV/DVD $38,810.

    Comments please.

We looked at an XLE Sienna adding package #3 (the safety "stuff"). We compared it to an EX Ody. The Sienna folks were dealing from the invoice...the Honda folks were dealing down from MSRP...the Toyota was still going to be more expensive. We might have been swayed by the fact that we have owned 99 and 02 Odys but I really looked at the Sienna hard and really, in the end, if the price had been the same I still would have bought the 05 Ody. I really believe that is going to move back ahead of the Sienna in most of the professional ratings.
  • samnoesamnoe Member Posts: 731
If you get the Sienna XLE you probably get leather seats, fog lamps, upgraded stereo w/10 speakers, and the safety package includes wiper de-icer, so this is not a fair comparison to the Ody EX, but rather to the EX-L.

And by the way, this should be discussed in the "Honda Ody vs. Toyota Sienna" board.

I have the EXL about 3 1/2 weeks. No nav. Both myself and my 5 & 7 yr olds daugters are wizards at the DVD already, my 3 yr old goes with the flow.

    1) Can the sound of the movie play through the main speakers?

Yes, sound is played throught out the van, but my kids all use headphones so that Mom and I can enjoy the radio. It came with two headphones. I had two infra red headphones from my SUV system and they work fine, not stuck buying expensive honda headsets.

    2) We were not really able to get the DVD I brought playing (ran out out time + dealer ignorance). Is there a way to start/control a movie from the NAV screen or other dashboard located buttons?

Yes, you can control the from the front seat. Can choose to control up front or give the kids the option to control using the easy to use remote. Believe me your 6 yr old will figure this out quickly. push the dvd button, the controls for the dvd are label on the radio channels, reminds me of vcr controls - rewind, pause, fast forward, play. With remote can also control the entire audio system, thats when you lock it and control in the front only.

    3) If an adult in the front row uses the remote, I suppose he can change tracks and so on, but how can you see the DVD menu?

Homer answered this already, see #2 above.

FYI- I do not know if anyone else posted this.
When the DVD player is turned on the back speakers are automatically turned off, which is okay unless you are an adult who happend to sit in the back. This can be over riden. To do this push and hold the "rear power" button until the no speaker displays vanishes. Makes a different in sound.

    Hope this helps

I would definitely demand $2K off MSRP for the Ody EXL NAV+RES and buy that. In the OKC + Dallas areas, people are getting $2K off already. These vans are just not flying off the lots.
  • doug889doug889 Member Posts: 60
Mind if I ask where you can get a XLE Limited with NAV/DVD for $35,450? Sorry it's not quite Ody related?

My experiences have been the opposite of yours. I'm in the mid-atlantic region and the EXL-RES/NAV is currently the most popular model and the dealers can't keep these in inventory. You may get $500 off MSRP, but your lucky to see that. The only model I believe wiht more wiggle room is the Base Touring. Some of these have been sitting for weeks, but I find it hard to believe the EXL-RES/NAV is not selling. This package gives you the most bang for your buck.

Do you know if the slate green is a popular color?

What does the olive interior look like?

Is it a dark or light color? I need a car with light
exterior and interior since i live the sunny state

  • revitrevit Member Posts: 476
majordad, I think he was referring to the Toyota Sienna as since the new Honda Odyssey has been on the market, Toyota has definitely been having more difficulty in moving the Sienna which isn't a surprise as dollar for dollar, the 2005 Honda Odyssey is a better value and definitely a Best Buy.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
See which one you prefer the best, then if there really is no preference, then try to get a discount on the EX-L RES/NAV. It'll give you the most bang for the buck considering you don't have to pay nearly $40K for the Touring model. The Sienna should be down to around invoice, but I don't know the current invoice on the Sienna, so I can't really help you there.

I just bought an EX-L for my wife this afternoon. They didn't want to budge on the MSRP but they gave me a good price for my Audi A4 and they threw in the MP3 player and mud guards. They will bargain for options if they don't budge on the price. My wife and I are really happy with the purchase. Happy hunting from Ohio...

I don't think Homer did answer this. More explicitly, how do you get the DVD menu (or the picture for that matter) to come on the NAV screen in the front? I have trouble getting the DVD to the part the kids want (they are little twerps who are not old enough to use the remote).
  • lumbarlumbar Member Posts: 421
When you say stuff like "the 2005 Honda Odyssey is a better value and definitely a Best Buy," are you paraphrasing a Honda brochure, quoting it outright or some of both? Wouldn't the Odyssey have been an even better value if they hadn't increased prices so much for '05? With such high year-over-year percentage increases, it appears that Honda is really judging how much the market will bear for the advances in the '05 and is leaving the value end to others.
  • torquetorque Member Posts: 14
Could it really be true that the US version of the 05' Ody does NOT have DRL ? If so, why not? Isn't this a safety issue?

I didn't know that they still made cars without DRL.
  • ladgeladge Member Posts: 6
I have no idea about how popular the slate green is. We really like it and have heard many compliments. It seems more of a light blue/silver to me instead of green.
The olive is almost a light grey color. I think these colors would work in Arizona, though you may be able to find something lighter.
  • ace1000ace1000 Member Posts: 151
I tried turning on the headlights and leaving them on. This also turns on the tail lights and keeps the lights on when the parking brake is engaged, which is way DRL works on Volvos. The instrument panel dims, but I haven't found this to be a problem yet. The lights turn off automatically after a few seconds when you turn off the engine.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
With the large increase in pricing, you also have to take into account all that extra stuff you're getting. (especially on the EX-L and Touring models)
  • andreabandreab Member Posts: 21
My husband and I saw a slate green Touring yesterday with the olive green interior. The olive green was a light gray. This color and interior was our favorite thus far. It was a very overcast and drizzly day, so the slate green color may have appeared to be darker. To me, it was a very light sage/silver/metallic color. We are still waiting on an ocean mist to come in, which should be in within the next 2 weeks. At that time, we will have seen all of the colors and make our decision then. Glad I waited to see them in person first, I do not think the color swatches we had seen accurately depicted the true colors. By the way, there were 3 touring, 2 EX-L and 2 EX sitting on the lot.
