    Hi,
The dealership that I was working with said the money factor + residual (36 month/15K miles - Limited) is .00176 and 49%.
    That can't be right...right?

I agree with the residual, but the MF is either marked way up or they're quoting something other than top tier credit - we show the Limited MF as .00079.

36/15 numbers are .00060 and 49%. Extra miles are charged up front and deducted from the calculated residual at a rate of between .15-.25 per mile.

Do you think there are chances that residual get better towards high 50s.?
    MF has got competitive now.
I was quoted $3000 for dealers discount and $2000 rebates on l plus with advance tech, 8 passenger, 18" wheel and NAV. Is this good or lots of room says 2-3k further discount possible?

    We don't track selling prices.

No idea if the residuals will get better or not ... but, my gut says not.

Thank you!! In my research about leasing i keep hearing the advice to simply call or email the dealerships and ask them for these numbers (RV and MF). But NO ONE I've contacted will give me the numbers! And I've spoken with 5 or 6 different dealerships in NJ and NYC. They want me to come into the dealership. How is it you have access to these numbers?

    Confidential sources. :sunglasses:

Don't ask for the RV and MF ... get the MSRP and adjusted cap cost (selling price plus any taxes or fees that you are not paying up front). We can run the payments and decide if the dealer is marking up the MF or not.

RV is fixed by the bank; dealer cannot modify this.

OK. I have committed to leasing the 2017 Pacifica Limited. I expect delivery this week. 36 month lease at 12,000\year. MSRP = $48,260 and the adjusted cap cost I signed up for = $41,716. Monthly payment is $290/month with my additional 11,000 cap cost reduction. I know that's unusual to put down so much on a lease and I'm hoping I won't regret it down the road (I'll be adding GAP insurance asap - it is not included in the lease). I had my reasons. When negotiating with the dealer I was armed with your MF and RV numbers and that was VERY helpful. I was able to really sound like I had done my homework (in fact I had)! Dealer came down from an offered MF of .00100 to my request to lower it to .00079. Same for the RV of 51%.
My combined credit score was 755.
So how have I done? What did I miss? Don't spare my feelings! If I was had (I figure there's something I didn't consider) I'd like to know now before I pick up the car - And for the next time I have to do this. Thank you.

The only concern I have is on the $11K cap reduction. GAP will not reimburse you if the car is stolen or totaled.

With the numbers you've provided, I get $527/mo plus tax.

Don't worry about it .. go enjoy your new van. I saw one the other day ... very stylish!

I thought that GAP insurance was just for that reason no? To cover  the cost of the remaining Lease payments in case the car is stolen or totaled.

I'll have to double check with my insurance carrier, but what does  regular car insurance cover in case of total loss?

On a lease, only the remaining lease obligation.

The money you put down reduces the size of that obligation, so it is not reimbursed.

Better to have a higher payment and use the spare cash to offset that. Just in case.

Let's use an example (made up numbers to keep things simple).

$44,000 MSRP, residual $22,000 for 36 months. You negotiate a cap cost of $40,000. Depreciation is then $18,000, or $500 per month.

You make 5 payments, then total the car. The remaining obligation ($18,000 - $2500 of payments) is covered by GAP.

Next, you decide to make a cap reduction of $5000, reducing your cap to $35,000. Your payment drops from $500/mo to $361/mo.

(I'm omitting the MF and rent charge, again to keep things simple).

You make the same 5 payments, then total the car. The remaining obligation ($13,000 - $1805 of payments) is covered by GAP. The $5000 you put down is not recovered.

In a sense, you've simply pre-paid the lease payments with the cap reduction.

Yes I see now that's it's a bad idea to put a large down payment on a lease. It's a gamble in a sense. In addition It's esentially prepaying a portion of the lease payments. However, Is there ANY redeeming value to the large downpayment if I have an eye towards buying the car at the end of the lease ? Just Looking for a silver lining !

No, because the residual value is based on the MSRP, not the cap cost. The only thing the down payment does is lower your monthly payment - which is why many ads have that requirement in them to make the payment a nice round number ($299, $399, $549, etc.).

Thanks so much for this into!  I have not yet signed the lease agreement. I have just written to the dealer and asked if I could leave all the terms and numbers the same that we agreed on yesterday except I would like to only leave the minimum required down payment, and adjust my monthly payments upward of course.  Hope they're ok with that! If they are, I'll take the extra money I would have given the dealer and put it into a bank account earmarked for my future lease payments to offset the higher monthly lease payment. Thoughts??

You have some savings in finance charges. I wouldn't say for sure, that you wouldn't collect some insurance proceeds, above and beyond the lease payoff, but your down payment amount wouldn't have any bearing on it.

By putting down that large of an amount, you've negated any need for GAP insurance, but also any benefit.

Your car insurance will pay what the car is worth at the time of the accident. The amount of money owed or the fact that it's leased or financed has no impact on what your car insurance will pay. If the value is less than amount owed, the gap insurance will make up that difference. If it's greater (unlikely with a lease) you would receive that portion back.

I suspected as much, with the large rebates.

Unfortunately, we don't have the US Bank numbers to calculate the deal using the numbers you've provided us.

Here's the thing - if you have taken delivery, there isn't much you can do at this point.

Go and enjoy your new Pacifica - I've seen a few on the road, and they are quite the handsome vehicle. The pleasure you get from your new car will be with you longer than any feelings you may have about the deal itself.

Come back at the end of your lease - before you sign your next deal. We'll be here and happy to help.

Nice that you'll get a "do over". Take a look at the articles at this link, to help you get familiar with how leasing works:

Will you get the opportunity to re-negotiate the numbers? Or will the replacement lease use the exact same data as the original?
