For some reason, I like those franken 4x4s when they stick a car on top of a truck frame. There is an auto body shop on rt. 130 N. around Bordentown that that a (pink?) 90's vintage Eldo convertible parked out front.
this one, seems better than most. Hate the grill. But nice BMW buckets!
Porsche engines are $18K-$20K now, and Ferraris are hitting $60K. It's all because of the "while we're in there" approach. E-Type engine comes out with the transmission and those weigh about 1/2 ton all told. With all that damage, he should settle up with insurance and start over.
Had the old dear out on a hazy smoky (huge fires to the east, offshore winds blowing smoke west of the mountains, poor air quality no doubt not helped by a pre-emissions car) warm (mid 80s) summer day. Started right up, ran fine - I still think the idle speed is set too slow, but I will give it a chance
Got a few compliments, one from a guy who stopped in traffic and beeped to say "nice car".
Something very sad about making a utilitarian vehicle "precious".
Boy did you trigger a memory, Stever. When my dad finished grad school in 1955 he bought a VW. About a year later he had a conference in Michigan and he and my mom decided to drive there from our home in California, with my sister and me in tow, camping at night. Needless to say, with the four of us, our luggage, and the camping gear, space was a problem. But my uncle worked in sheet metal and he fabricated a roof carrier for us; basically a box with heavy metal mesh sides reinforced by solid metal at the top and bottom. It was held to the roof with suction cups, with safety straps that clipped under the rain channels on each side of the car. The thing was as ugly as stink and took two people to install or remove, but we could have flipped the car without denting it. It worked perfectly during the 6000 mile round trip and continued to be pressed into periodic service until Dad traded the VW in several years later.

@bhill2, your father was ahead of his time. My wife took this pic of the friend who drove her to Alaska in '79. No wonder my wife made me sell the SuperBeetle I got used in Anchorage in '80 before we met.
Yep, has the classic VW rack - none of that fancy wood base stuff you see on the restro models out in California. Poor quality snap, but yes, that's a cat in said friend's arms and a Welcome to Canada sign in the background..
The SuperBeetle rack was my long-live Quick N Easy's, that went from car to car up until the Quest, which was the first car I had with internal raingutters. They were 78" wide and stuck out a wee bit on the VW.
never liked the TDs--the small wheels just kill the looks of the car. TCs are so much prettier. I wouldn't mind a TF, though, as it at least got rid of the TDs blockishness.
Bentley---price is about market correct if it's a sharp #2 car. RHD is a 30% deduct however.
wait....it says "John" Voight on the registration.....:)
Extra value for movie status? Well, it had better be one famous actor and one famous movie and one big fat part for the car. I remember one auction where they were hawking a car that Amy Grant sat in for one minute in some bomb of a movie. I don't think anyone cared.
There's a few small cars from my childhood that I like. I'm particularly fond of GM's downsized '77 B/C-bodies...oh, wait, not the type of "small" car most people think of!
Actually, I do like some of those small, angular hardtop coupes the Japanese offered in the late 70's and early 80's. Stuff like the Corolla SR-5 from around 1980-83, the '79-83 Challenger/Sapporo by Mitsubishi, and the Datsun 200SX notchback. I like the Mazda 626 coupe from around that timeframe as well, although I've only seen those in pictures...never in person.
I think that covers them all...can't remember if I'm missing anything or not. When I was a teenager, I worked with a girl who had an '81 or so Corolla SR-5, but it wasn't the notchback coupe. It was a 2-door hardtop that sort of split the difference, in my opinion, between a wagon and a hatchback. Like this...
60000 miles in a VW bug back seat. Do you have back problems today
I was only about 5 yo. I spent a lot of the trip curled up in the cubby behind the rear seat napping, especially when my sister and I had been bugging each other until my father was getting that look on his face and my butt was starting to try to hide.

Mazda 626 HT coupe - maybe a west coast thing. I still see one for sale here and there. When I was a little kid and they were new, I remember a woman a couple doors down bought a new one - it replaced a yellow Fox Mustang that I thought was a lot cooler.
I think those old Mazda's were kind of neat cars and good drivers. But I owned one in the early 80's and while excellent mechanically, they had some of the thinnest metal and chintziest interior plastics at the time. Much improved today though.
My brother had one of those Mazdas for a while. Everything @berri said was true. Nice looking car but really chintzy. Didn't keep it very long and I have not seen one in decades.

I would be chasing the trucker to make it good. How can you not have insurance?

" Ah, Mr. Croxton...I'm from the Transport Company and I have your Jaguar on my truck ready to drop off in your driveway right now!"
" That's the GOOD news."
This guy is nuts if he think that car is salvagable. Heat from the fire will warp every body panel for one thing.
It doesn't even look like it has any good parts to salvage!

My price comment was somewhat in jest, of course - that's by far the most expensive 4 door fintail variant I've ever seen.

Had to go look - Yakima only offers hitch racks for the Tesla Model S.
Roof racks on some classic cars do fit right in - those of us who had VW Bugs enjoy seeing the classic roof rack on those.

This one has plenty of spares but visually isn't a project - $59,500 on the local craigslist.
1951 mgtd - $9,500.
