I visited a local dealer this afternoon and checked FJ cruiser myself. I agree with some opinions here about the poor visibility issue. The feeling on the driver seat makes me recalling about my experience with a Hummer (H1) many years ago when I was in the Army in an Asian country. If this is what you want, make sniper hard to shoot you from the windshield, FJ cruiser is the vehicle for you. :)

    I'be read FJ's gauge backlighting is blue"ish".

Canadian gas prices are even higher than American. I had an accident about a year ago, junked my car, took a bus and was relaxed and with substantially more cash in my pockets. Resist the urge to drive an FJ (and it looks sharp on the road, I've seen it :) ) and you'll be retiring much earlier :)

With no truck I would have to walk 2 miles, get a train for 15 miles and a bus for 3 miles just to get to work. My commute time would go from 45 mins. a day to at least 2.5hrs.
Reading Some of your many prior posts [i.e.1279] you obviously do drive. Why, if you're not interested in buying, or already own, an FJ are you participating here? I could ask a few other people the same question.
  • bcmalibu99lsbcmalibu99ls Member Posts: 625
Post 1279 says I saw an FJ: "It was driving North," not "I was driving North." I was sitting inside a bus, enjoying my $69 a month bus pass :)

Have you been to Vancouver, BC? Come, it's beautiful, and we love American tourists! Virtually no one else tips our wonderful hospitality workers :)

In Vancouver, the transit is very accessible to a whole lot of people. Moreover, about eighty thousand people live downtown and basically walk to work, shops and entertainment. Thus, mind-boggling traffic jams are virtually unheard of, especially in downtown. Moreover, mild weather makes it easy to withstand waiting for the bus even in the middle of winter.

I do want an FJ, and am a fan of the truck! Toyota finally produced a good looking, tough off-road rig. I almost gave up on Toyota with all the ugly or plain looking vehicles they were producing. Now, I'll keep saving and then, in ten years or so...

Yah,it's definitely a cool vehicle, saw a titanium FJ without the white roof and it was the best looking one I've seen yet! Many here ,myself included, are disappointed by the prices though and if you go back to the beginning of this thread all the talk and excitement was about how affordable the FJ would be,well it isn't and many of those who posted here on the topic have left and hope prices will drop(based on the base prices) after the hubbub dies out,but that could take years.IMO Toyota should develop a Suzuki Samurai type of droptop under the Scion name.Give it a 4 banger tuned for torque,AC as an option, roll down windows,a roll bar, hose out interior with drain plugs, neoprene waterproof seats, manual locking hubs, and price it around 18-20K. Such a vehicle would sell like hotcakes if only as a cheapo convertible.Because a vehicle like that would never command huge profits or markups,it will never be made, but we can all dream can't we?

z: Such a vehicle would sell like hotcakes if only as a cheapo convertible.

me: sounds like you want a dune-buggy. ;) After a few rebates and discounts, I can buy an Xterra for $20K; why would someone buy something as crude as what you described for that price? Even a Jeep Wrangler would be a bargain and nicer than that. Why don't you go buy a used 4-cyl Wrangler?
  • zombozombo Member Posts: 89
Because it's not a Toyota . My friends and I had CJs back in the day and they were unreliable j-u-n-k !And what you call crude ,others would call simple and uncomplicated. But with a large portion of the young male population of this country unable to work a clutch and shift a standard,I'm not surprised that most 4 wheelers are made and marketed to soft yuppies these days.

Sorry, misread that. Yes, I was in Vancouver at the end of last September. It rained every day but we still had a great time. Granville is fantastic and so is that huge park. But I digress, here in So Cal public transportation sucks, hence awful traffic. I could get by without my FJ, I have other vehicles, but the cruiser is a "second car" for weekend fun.
Another nice thing about B.C is there are far fewer obese people!

Yes, I was in Vancouver at the end of last September. It rained every day but we still had a great time. Granville is fantastic and so is that huge park.

------ The best time to visit is between the beginning of May and about the middle of September, though sometimes even in the middle of October the weather is very nice.

But I digress, here in So Cal public transportation sucks, hence awful traffic. I could get by without my FJ, I have other vehicles, but the cruiser is a "second car" for weekend fun.

I used to live in LA, right next to the busiest intersection in the entire USA (I-405 @ I-10). Yeah, SoCal's traffic is for people with enormous bladders and tons of patience. But I did like the weather :)

Another nice thing about B.C is there are far fewer obese people!

You don't appreciate HOW nice it is, until you realize that even thin people sitting next to you on the bus are not leaving you much of a space :) Alas, it's all too easy to spot Americans in Vancouver - they usually resemble beached whales walking on the streets :( Guys, take better care of yourselves, it's not healthy to be so fat!!!

But back to FJ. Has anyone installed an ARB front bumper with a winch yet? Has it reduced the ground clearance and affected the mileage?

    Thank you!

    Zombo says:
"Yah,it's definitely a cool vehicle, saw a titanium FJ without the white roof and it was the best looking one I've seen yet!"

Really? everything i have seen shows all the colors with the white roof. there have been rumors of solid colors on some special editions that are not out yet.
  • bcmalibu99lsbcmalibu99ls Member Posts: 625
The non-white roof is likely a custom painting job
  • zombozombo Member Posts: 89
I assumed that the roof was custom painted by the customer ,looked good though! That white roof goes well with the yellow and blue colors, not so much with the others.

I finally got to see the FJ in person. It looks awesome from the outside and from a distance. If you are into getting second looks, this is a auto for you!

BUT, it is clear that Toyota has really tried too hard to go after appearance and forgot the substance. The use of plastic is over the top for some of the exterior and too much of interior. The ergonomics of the interior are so bad: from the pathetically small front windows to the dungeon-like back seat. This FJ will not have the popularity of the FJs of old, not for off-roading. It is unfortunate that Toyota took the page from the domestics a chose to focus on exterior looks... and did not stick to the utility formulae utilized for their other off-roady SUVs.

BCmalibu99ls: ARB will add over 125 lbs of additional weight (before the winch). My Gen2 4Runner dropped slightly more than 1/2 mpg after a TJM addition. Think of it as an extra person that is sitting in your car on every trip you make.
  • voodoofxvoodoofx Member Posts: 81
Is it OK to discuss where to buy options for the best price? For instance, I found a place that sells ARB bull bars for about $300 less than a well known Cruiser shop. The latter also wanted over $300 to install. Do others know if the ARB is a simple "bolt-on"?
  • kernickkernick Member Posts: 4,072
you: And what you call crude ,others would call simple and uncomplicated.

me: My point was that a vehicle as you described should not cost anymore than $15K, if I can get a decently loaded V-6 Xterra for $20K. Though you didn't like my use of the word crude, I really am not trying to be derogatory towards that setup - that is what the market would consider it. I say that because people have driven that type of vehicle from the market. I bet <2% of the vehicles sold in this country come without AC or power windows. And Jeep just dropped their 4-cyl. in the Wrangler because there was no demand for it.

Really I don't ever see a simple and uncomplicated car being built again, unless the Chinese start making it. The microchip is embedded into all new systems to give better mpg and emissions, safety items such as ABS, airbags ... many wich are becoming standard equipment, or mandated by law. Whether you like it or not new vehicles are becoming more and more automated and computer controlled.

There was an article on Edmunds several months ago about Romanian off-road vehicles possibly coming to the US. They should cost around 20K USD, and those are real off-road trucks. Very few "on board amenities" and tough off-road hardware are what those trucks all about

You're probably thinking of the Aro Hunter. From what I hear, a pretty decent vehicle, but I think the factory was going broke so they had to pull out of the US market. In fact, as I recall this was the factory where...yep:

"...Aro workers proposed to donate their sperm in exchange for money to pay off millions of dollars of company debt."

That's sad, because 15 years ago Honda sold the CRX without power windows, mirrors, door locks, cruise, and even A/C was a dealer installed option. But it was inexpensive, fun, quick, handled well, and it sold very well and is still popular today. When the new CRX comes out in late 07 it will be loaded with every option,be much heavier than the last one,and be selling for thousands over sticker. In essence it will be a CRX in name only, like the FJ is,more H3 than FJ.

Did you have any trouble removing the roof rack? I have a 2007 FJ cruiser that is one inch too tall for my garage and the only thing I can figure is to remove the roof rack temporarily (until I can get my wife to buy a new house!).

Worried about leaking - any thoughts
  • ron41ron41 Member Posts: 37
If you remove your roof rack there will be spots or holes which were once used for holding down your rack. It isn't a wise choice. Can't you park it outside?
  • voodoofxvoodoofx Member Posts: 81
You need to browse other FJ forums. I think it was in "FJ Cruiser ih8mud" a guy explains how to modify the roof rack using the lower rear section only. Also where to get the correct plugs. The FJ is shipped with the roof rack holes plugged. The rack is installed on arrival at US port.
  • hewalhewal Member Posts: 2
Actually every FJ comes with white roof. So they are not custom-painted by owners
  • zombozombo Member Posts: 89
The titanium FJ that I saw was all titanium, roof included. So the owner must have had the roof painted to match the rest of the vehicle.Best looking FJ I've seen so far.
  • seaverseaver Member Posts: 2
Be patient, fellas. The Cruiser is a "niche" market car with a smaller audience that it appears to be. Once the first wave subsides, they'll be readily available.
  • seaverseaver Member Posts: 2
Be wary of the roof rack---they traditionally make much noise at highway speeds and create more drag(decreased fuel economy).

I've known for the last 2 weeks that our FJ was arriving on the 28 of April. So yesterday we stopped by the dealership to visit the other FJ's and talk to our sales guy. He informed us there was a rail delay and that our FJ was probably not going to arrive till May 4th. Needless to say i was very disappointed. All i've gotta say is that there better not be anymore delays, i don't think i can take it. lol

I feel your pain. Mine arived on US soil yesterday from Japan. It's now in Honolulu but I live in Kauai less that 100 miles away but I have to wait til it gets floated over sometime next month. I can't wait. :shades:
  • goatheadgoathead Member Posts: 25
Are you getting the 1st one delivered to Kauai? What color?

I'll be over that way in July, I'll make sure to wave if I see you in your FJ!!!
  • ron41ron41 Member Posts: 37
I've used the mid grade unleaded gas in my fj for one fillup. Is that okay instead of the premium? The miles on the truck is about 1,400
  • oliverwinstnoliverwinstn Member Posts: 5
That does stink, mine is supposed to be in tomorrow so I hope it's not a national rail delay.

Unfortunately our FJC is delayed somewhere between Vancouver and Lethbridge. I even offered to drive out there and pick it up, but the dealer has to do a pre-sale inspection of some sort. This is my first (NEW) vehicle so i'm weary about anything that they tell me. Hopefully yours arrives tomorrow and you can do so wheelin' on the weekend. What color did you get?
  • voodoofxvoodoofx Member Posts: 81
I've just ran two tanks of mid grade with no noticable difference in performance and no pinging.
  • hawaii101hawaii101 Member Posts: 10
    Aloha Goathead
It's not the 1st on Kauai. I'd been talking to the dealer for months and almost ordered one sight unseen but decided to wait and see one up close and personal. I was there as they pulled a 2WD voodoo blue onto the lot and had my titanium 4x4 manual ordered in less than 15 minutes. See you in July. I'll be the guy with the ear to ear grin.... :D

    Hi all,
I had Toyota dealership installed a factory alarm system to my FJ Cruiser before I took its delivery. I cannot find any alarm LED (like any other normal car-alarm system out there) in the driver cabin and my saleman does not know anything about it. Therefore, an intruder would not see any visual indicator that the vehicle is alarmed-on.
Does any FJ cruiser owners out there have a factory alarm system and know anything about the missing LED ? (is it missing by Toyota alarm-system design or I am missing something ? Please reply.
    Thanks much!

No LED is normal with Toyota [and a lot of other makes].

enroute: I'd wait until the 4 door Jeep come out. It's bigger than the FJ. It has more cargo room, more head room, etc. and it's much better riding than the last Wrangler. It's a real family car, with removable panels in the hardtop. Wait and look at the Jeep Unlimited 4 Dr. before you buy. Lots of legroom in the back seat for kids. MUCH more than the FJ and the seats fold flat! They do not do that at all in the FJ. :)
  • clarkkentclarkkent Member Posts: 154
I can't believe anyone would buy a new car ever 2 years because they would get a new warrant.

If I bought a new car and thought it would not go 5 years without any trouble I would not buy it!

Are you saying you don't think the new FJ will last 2 years?? If you think it will, why would you need a new warranty. The guy talking about fools and their money WAS right on the money! :)
  • jamesbass1jamesbass1 Member Posts: 75
I doubt seriously if Toyota designed the FJ Cruiser as a "family car"...unless your family likes to frequent National Wildlife Reserves & camp a lot. :confuse:
  • brazenheadbrazenhead Member Posts: 11
I don't understand everyone's fixation with legroom, if your the one driving the FJ what do you need legroom for behind you? Unless you got 6 foot tall children explain to me why they need a bunch of legroom.

Does the FJ come standard with Xenon Lights? Is that even an option?
  • voodoofxvoodoofx Member Posts: 81
Wow, that new Jeep Unlimited 4 Dr. sounds great. As soon as Toyota starts making them I'll place an order!
  • carlover3carlover3 Member Posts: 29
My FJ cruiser comes with Options Package #2 which includes in-dash CD changer and 9 speakers (includes subwoofer). I can find two speakers on the two front doors, two rear speakers hanging near at top of the rear gate, subwoofer counted as the fifth speaker (I think!).
Where are the other four speakers in this vehicle ?
these four speakers are not visible to me (did I miss to see them inside this vehicle ? ). Someone please reply if you have found these four speakers. (my saleman does not know the answer :-) )
    Thanks in advance.

Two speakers on the front doors, two speakers on top of the dashboard left corner and right corner, two speaker in rear hanging near top of rear gate, subwoofer plus one within that unit and nxt tech in the lining of the roof inside.

This is for those nay sayers who ragged on the FJ. FJ's April sales totals were 5,649 not bad for a great SUV. So there are at least 10,000 people who feel they've spent their money on a quality vehicle.
  • fjcrusier1fjcrusier1 Member Posts: 1
There are 2 speakers in the head liner over the driver and passenger, and there are 2 more on top of the dash.

  • carlover3carlover3 Member Posts: 29
I am not aware of any Xenon lights in my FJ cruiser whether it's a standard item or an option. Someone please correct me if you know for sure.

Are you aware of what the sales stats were for the H3 the month of april?
  • max460max460 Member Posts: 25
THE Hummner H3 had sales of 5,413 and the FJ had 5,643

Sounds like a horse race to me. I guess gas guzzling vehicles are still alive and well.
