    .00040 MF and 61% residual.

The monthly payment will be largely determined by the selling price you negotiate.

First time poster, long(ish) time reader. I am looking for the latest MF/RV for a Subaru Forester 2.5i with alloy wheel package (Model code HFB, MSRP - 25,613) in NYC. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Also, are there typically substantial differences in MF/RV month to month? I'm likely not going to lease until June/July, but trying to get my ducks in a row now. Thanks agains for your help

I got slightly different numbers after including the $1K down so this is as good as any discussion to ask about Cap Cost versus Net Cap Cost. I may negotiate a price (Cap Cost) of $25K, but before I know it, the Net Cap Cost has crept higher because of destination fees, dealer doc fee, dealer prep fee, and of course title and registration. So my two questions are: is the lease payment based on Cap Cost or Net Cap Cost? Secondly, how do I know which fees are legitimate and how much they should really be?

Net (or adjusted) cap cost is what is used to calculate the payment.

Destination is part of the MSRP - if the dealer is breaking it out, that's disingenuous.

Dealer doc fee is bogus for anything over $50 - instead of negotiating it, simply adjust your offering price downward to compensate.

Dealer prep fee should be the same as the doc fee - if the dealer is charging both, might be time to find another dealer.

    Thank you. Yes, its CVT.

I understand the dealers have some flexibility with the MF (they can raise it up to .0005?), but should I be able to negotiate the MF if I very good credit ( 800ish)? Thanks for the additional info.

The MF we quote is for top tier credit. Cannot get any lower.

And yes, MF can be bumped .00050 by dealer.

Looking at a 2017 Forester XT; msrp $31,282 with a SP of $29,112. 2 yr and 3 yr lease in Oklahoma with 15k / yr pls. MF & Residual pls. How does my payment get effected for $1,000 down? Also, typically, is this a good time to lease a 2017 or better to wait for the 2018? Thanks a ton!

    Touring or Premium model?

On a three year lease, an additional $1000 down will lower the payment around $28/mo.

Generally, there are good lease deals on the XT, right now. But, it might require shopping around and getting a bigger discount.

2 year leases are not cost effective on Subarus.

Thanks for this. Car leasing/buying can seem like black box when you get into the financials and this info goes a long way to making it less opaque.

The math on a lease payment is not that complicated; dealers love to twist the numbers around. The information we provide should level the playing field.

Sorry, Premium model. Also, what is the mileage charge if I exceed 45k at the lease termination?

Ironically ten years ago I did lease an Outback for two years. Took it back with only 24 additional miles over my limit :-)

    Thanks much!

I see Subaru of Plano has a hail sale... anyone bought any of these? Does it brand the title in some way? How would a lease be affected with a $10,000 off cap cost? Lol

Not sure if my lease calculator is off. A different dealer said he would sell me the XT Premium for $27,111, MSRP is $31,384. They have a $500 doc fee. So the lease pmt according to him is $291 + tax. Even if I marked up the MF to .00095 I come up with less than that... what do others get? I'm at $280, even if I include a $595 acquisition fee. Did I understand they are waiving those? If so, I'm at $263...

    Thanks again!

In general perhaps it's not the best idea to lease when they have 0% interest anyways... I just usually trade every 2-3 years and prefer to keep my money in the bank... thoughts?

If you can get a dealer to give you a good discount, and not mark up the rate or add extraneous charges, then the Forester is a pretty good lease deal.

If you buy the car it's $500/mo. or more. I'd be pretty happy with a $310/mo lease payment, in comparison.

Here is what he said back:
A 36 month lease at 15K miles/year with first month's payment plus tax plus the $4.74 Colorado state temporary permit fee due at signing has a monthly payment of $291 plus tax with approved credit.

Doesn't look like he rolled anything in... what did you come up with? I feel like the price is very good, agree? It's the finance part that I'm not sure about. Thanks!

So if the dealer is telling me the MF is .00105 and I have good credit then they are just jacking it up?

    Thanks

.00105 is the 2.5i Premium MF marked up the max allowed.

For the Limited, the max markup would result in a MF of .00090

Ok... Forester XT premium. Can I lease with like 17,500 / year? Residual? Also, what is the mileage penalty? .15/mile?

I confirmed my app is accurate with your online step by step guide. Thanks!
    Appreciate your help so much.

    .00045 MF and 63% residual for 36/15.
Subtract $750 from that residual amount to account for the extra 7500 miles

Hi guys, I'm working on a Forester XT Premium 36/15 lease in NJ with all payments rolled into the monthly. MSRP is $30,180 and I'm being quoted a sale price of $27,500 with $300 reg, $299 doc and $595 bank fee and nothing else going into the cap cost. Based on that info I'm getting a monthly of $310 but the dealer plugs those numbers into the bank software and gets $325. Looks to me like there's an extra $500 hiding in the deal somewhere. Do you guys get the same numbers as me? If so, any tips to track down the discrepancy?

    Many thanks in advance.

Where is the sales tax? Paid by you up front, or rolled into the deal and paid monthly?

That would account for the difference.

Thanks Michaell. My calculation does include $697.71 NJ sales tax at .06875%. I didn't mention it because I wanted the sanity check to be completely from scratch... But I can show my work if needed.

What cap cost are you using for your calculation?

Also recognize that the dealer can mark up the MF.

    I'm using 27,500 + 300 + 299 + 595 + 697.71 which equals 29,391.71.

    I get $310, as well.

Ask the dealer for their calculated tax amount, and the adjusted CAP cost
Also, ask what money factor they are using.

Are the June MF/RV numbers available yet? If so, could you please provide them for a 2.5i CVT with alloy wheels package (MSRP $25,229). 36 month/10,000 miles. This would be for New York, assuming they are not national numbers. Thanks

We didn't get the June programs before the weekend. Hopefully, we'll see something on Monday
