    Hi all,
    Few questions:
    1. Need the MF and Residual for 2017 Forester Limited 2.5i for Los Angeles (I live in Glendale, CA)
    2. Is the MF/Residual based on the zip code of the dealership or my home? Just wondering if I have to drive 50 miles out to get a car in inventory and the MF/Residual would be different.
    3. What is the best way to determine the "negotiated sale price"? If the car MSRP is $34,066, should I ask them $31,000?
    Thank you!

    1. 61% and .00060 for 36 months, 15,000 miles per year
    2. Subaru numbers are national
    3. Use the "make / model / year" pull downs at the top of the screen to link to the price tools

Other question...does Subaru do a 39 month lease? And totally forgot to put in the miles. Thanks for reminding me of that. So below are updated figure questions. Thanks again!

    39 month lease
    - 15k (MF/Residual): ?

Does Subaru financing do MSD's? Would be great if they did. :) I was told to never put down money on a lease as it goes Poof! once you do it. So, what are the options if this is not a good idea?

    No MSDs for Subaru.

Yes, money down on a lease is money lost if the car is stolen or totaled.

If you're concerned about the payment, start with a less expensive car.

You can lease any car for $299/mo - even a Rolls Royce - if you put enough money down. That just masks the true cost of the lease.

Yes, i know. :) Just trying to make sure I have all the right info before I start really diving in with the car.

You've been great help. Can you please confirm that I am correct based on what I have learned from you tonight? :) I plugged the numbers in and seems like my 39 month lease is higher monthly than the 36 month. :/

    Hello!

Can you give me the April residual & MF for a Touring Premium and Touring XT in Texas?

And quick question - for the residual value calculation, what number do you multiply the residual % by? MSRP, gross cap cost, adjusted/net cap cost?

    Thanks!

What lease term and how many miles per year?

Residual is calculated against the MSRP - bottom line number of the window sticker.

Doh! Completely forgot that part. 36 months and 12k miles/year.

With respect to money factor, does credit rating affect that or is it the same for everyone so long as you get approved?

    There is no Touring Premium.

.00060 MF and 62% residual for XT Touring.

The rates we give are for top tier credit. If your credit is lower than that, the money factor increases quickly.

Here is a deal that I received today. How does it look? My own calculations tell me my payment should be $345 per month but their sheet shows $366.43. Maybe they're marking up the MF?

    2017 Subaru Forester XT Touring
    MSRP: $38060
    Selling Price: $35106 (Invoice?)
    Tax: $2194.13
    License/Reg/Fees: $340
    36/10k lease - 63% residual
    MF: .00060

Total drive off: $3400 (Taxes + license/reg/fees + first month's payment + $499.44 (what can this be? I thought it was acquisition but I believe that's $595 and I don't see that anywhere on my sheet,)
    Monthly Payment: $366.43

    I get $345/mo as well.

Confirm with the dealer what adjusted cap cost they are using - if it's higher than the selling price, find out what's been added (acquisition fee?)

Hi! I've been trying to educate myself on leases. I read your comment that Subaru numbers are national, then why do people ask for numbers for their location? And I'm in Cleveland Ohio interested in a forester premium with eyesight. What are the numbers I need to know going into the deal?

Also saw this advertised on dealer's website "Lease a New 2017 Subaru Forester Premium HFB-02. Only $159 per month with $1999 down for 36 months 10,000 miles" But Premium isn't an HFB-02, correct?

Sometimes, Subaru has regional differences. (not lately) We don't discourage providing extra information, as there are differences in the way lease taxes are applied. Also, we can make fun of where you live. (your location is too easy, though).

Looks like HFB-02 is the base model with the automatic/alloy package
(HFB-01 is base automatic, without alloys)

Long time listener, first time caller.

Started shopping for a 2017 Subaru Forester 2.51 Premium - white.
    With CVT Transmission - MSRP - $500
    All-Weather - MSRP $1695
    No other options/accessories.

These are the number I received from the Dealer in Hicksville, NY
    36 months/12,000 Miles

    MSRP - $27380
    Cap - $26,880 (big $500 off)
    Residual % - 66% = $17741
    Depreciation - $9139
    MF = .0008
    Tax rate - .08625

Everything In Lease except $800 at signing of lease fee, for DMV, Title, Plates.

    He quoted me a lease - $344/month.

My calculation based on the above numbers (First time doing this)

    Base Lease - $254
    Interest - $36
    Tax - $47
    Lease Payment - $337.

So, is the dealer quote good or should it be lower?

Thanks in advance - appreciate the time and help

We don't track selling prices - read though the last couple of pages of this thread to see what others have been able to negotiate.

I agree with the 66% residual and .00080 MF, for 36/10 on the CVT.

NY taxes the sum of the payments, then adds that number back to the cap cost if you don't want to pay them up front (and, you don't).

Adding in the $595 acquisition fee to the selling price, then adding the sales tax of that payment back in as well, I get $324/mo

Ask the dealer what adjusted cap cost they are using to get their quote, and how they got to that number from the selling price. That will help us understand what's going on.

    Sorry for the long follow-up

The first dealer said the residual was 66%. The second dealership gave a 65% depreciation.

How do you get them to reduce the cap cost from the MSRP? The first dealer went down only $500. Is that typical

The Subaru website says the MSRP for 2.5i Premium w/ CVT, All-weather + Starlink + eyesight is $28,565

    First - $27380 MSRP - Cap cost $26880
    Second - $29,555 MSRP - Cap cost- $27,335

And is the $595 lease acquisition fee added to the cap to then figure out the residual? Do i add the tax on $595 to the cap or just the 595 ( if i add the tax, I'm taxing the acq twice).

Here is what the second dealer quoted

Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium (14 Package) w/ Eyesight
    Stock #S7864
    Cap cost- $27,335
    Residual- 65%
    Money Factor –.00080
    Taxes/lease fees- $319 a Month + First +DMV
--Below is a break down. These are standard fees and NO EXTRA FEES WILL NE CHARGED. We do not charge any extra fees at North Coast Subaru. Same fees apply for the next Forster.

    Tax- $994.70
    Doc- 75$
    Inspection- 10$
    Tire Tax- 12.50$

Motor Vehicle Lease Acquisition fee - $595
AGAIN THERE ARE NO EXTRA FEES IN ANYWAY!

    I calculated

    Lease = 27981-18187.5/36 = 272
    Interest = 27981+18187.5 x .0008 = 37
    Tax = 272 + 37 x .08625 = 26 [rolled into monthly]

Lease + Interest + tax = 335.00/month with $335 due at signing + DMV fee

Where is my calculation off? I have total tax at $962.

I think he has me paying tax upfront but i asked for it to be rolled in. But, even not rolled in, i don't get $319.

Thanks for taking the time. First time trying to not overpay.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,684
    @tbraverman

Residual is always a percentage of the full MSRP, including destination.
Price paid, fees, etc will never affect the residual amount.
65% is the residual on this model for 36/12. Period. Anything quoted differently is either a different trim/model or a different term/mileage.

MSRP quotes from dealers that are different, are likely for different models. Make sure all prices (including the ones you look up) include the destination fee. Many dealers will quote you whatever they have on the lot, ignoring your requirements. No point in getting quotes for vehicles that don't match your wants/needs.

Acquisition fee is taxable, which is why your tax calculation is probably off.

If I add all of those fees/taxes into the CAP cost, I get $311/mo. (CAP of $29022)
That's pretty close to his $319. Only first payment and DMV due at signing, as stated.

    Thank you.

Can you send me how you did the calculations, so when i meet with the salesperson, I have back-up.

Does $311/$319 sound reasonable - I try to be fair - I know they need to make $$ and a $300 difference is no big deal. I blow that on dinners and guitars.

I will also check the thread if that is comparable to others (although NY tax rate is high compared to others).

NY tax is collected upfront. According to your quote, that's included in the CAP cost, so leave that out of the lease calculator.

So, I pay the tax, along with the DMV and first month, correct?

Are the dealer's monthly payments inclusive of tax?

The tax is included in the cap cost. You do not pay it up front.

Hopefully, my last post - again thanks to Mitchell and Co. for the expert advice.

Here are the numbers on the most recent offer: Subaru Forester Premium - White - CVT/All-weather - Eye-Sight (no liftgate)

MSRP - $28575 (same as Subaru)
Cap - $27000 (No $ down, taxes and fees rolled in)
    RV - .66
    MF - .0008
    Tax - 8.625%
    $307/month + First Month + DMV

When I use the $27000 cap & $28575 MSRP – Monthly Base is $279.82 + Tax 24.13= $303/Month. But shouldn’t the taxes already be in the calculation?

    In other words, the adjusted cap is really $868.68 ($24.13 x 36) + $27000 = $ 27,868.68 adjusted cap and monthly is $280?

Now, using the higher MSRP and new cap - $29170 & $27868.68 / RV= $19252.2 = $277/month (no tax added in the lease calculator)
If I add tax into the lease calculator I get $301.

Which is the real monthly number with tax ? $307, $301, $277 or $280?

What am I doing wrong here?

So, was the ‘cap” not really the “adjusted cap.” with taxes rolled in?

I put a $500 deposit down on this car which will be at the dealer in less than 30 days (which is when i actually need it).

Dealer said that the RV and MF may change next month. Didn't my deposit lock in those rates/monthly? Should I demand that the dealer lock-in that rate? If not, can i expect RV and MF to go up or down next month?

Just got an offer from another local dealer for a car in stock -$299/month, first month, DMV. 36/1000. 36/12000 - $307. Other place had 36/10000 at $307.

Still don't know if that is a good deal or not. Anyone? Bueller?

Hi, first of all thank you for your previous reply. I have few questions regarding the deal I'm getting.

    2017 forester 2.0 xt touring w/eyesight/navi
    MSRP 38,500
    Sale price 35,500
    Rf 64%
    Mf.00070
    1000 out of pocket
    380$ a month including tax
    This is in california

First question is this a good deal?
Second question I asked him what the deal would be w/o eyesight and navi he said it'll only be 15$ less a month, sounds a little too low don't u think? Considering that the price is 2500$ almost for that package, am I thinking right or am I confused on something. I think he wanted to sell me that car cuz he had it in stock.

If the taxes and fees are truly in the CAP cost (as you state), then don't enter any tax into the lease calculator.
I think we already went over this.
Plus, with that MSRP, CAP, residual and money factor, the payment is $262.81. If you get $279, then you are doing it wrong.

So, do you know that $27000 includes all the fees and taxes? I'll guess that's the price of the car, and they are telling you that all the taxes and fees are rolled in, but then they aren't giving you the actual adjusted CAP cost. If they were, the numbers would add up.
Do you know for a fact that they are using the base money factor, or are you assuming that?
There is a reason the numbers aren't adding up, but you aren't getting the right answers or aren't asking the right questions.
