Thank you so much for the information in this forum!

I ended up leasing a 2017 Forester Limited, with Package 23 (navi + audio upgrade/backup protection/blind spot/auto dim mirror with homelink, etc). 3 years / 36k miles. $269/mo with $2200ish at the dealer (covering sales tax / bank fees / dealer fees / DMV fees.

Here is what is confusing me:
    • >I turned down "Dealer A" offer for a Forester Limited with just the basic options (21?). The offer was for $1k under invoice--$1800 at signing for fees/first payment/etc $289/mo. MSRP was around 28k, selling price would have been $28k, IIRC.
    • >Yet this one (that I went with, at "Dealer B") sold for invoice (4k more than the other option). I walked out paying approx $2100 to cover sales tax, first payment and dealer/dmv fees and the first monthly payment. If I subtract out added options and final lease payments (covering the last few months of my old lease) lease payment is $269/month. MSRP was approx $34k / sale price was approx $32k.
I am just confused how to feel about this-- the purchase price wasnt as attractive (on paper) as the first option... And the business manager was a little less than thrilled with offering any more than 'the rent is computed by the software, but the money factor is .0006' (the total rent on my contract is approx $1200; I calculated it should have been $700ish.

Anyway, I'm out the door in a car I am thrilled with, paid a little over $2200 at the dealership / and will be paying effectively $269/month (plus remaining lease payments plus a bunch of options). Just based on my limited knowledge of how leases work, I am a bit off-put on how I never bothered with sale price negotiations-- I told them I wanted to put no more than $2100 down and be around $289/month and they worked the numbers.

Good deal? Or did I leave myself vulnerable on this? I am trying to figure out how this could be 'bad'--if at all (as I didnt focus on the core numbers this time). It was also confusing as (even though I said '0 cap cost reduction', it ended up being a cap cost reduction equal to the amount I paid plus a couple rebates. Business manager said they had to do this as all items needed to be on the contract....?

Again: Thanks again for all the help!

First of all, congrats on the new Forester!

Once you understand the mechanics, leasing is no more confusing than financing.

Yes, you should negotiate the selling price, and make sure that the MF isn't marked up on you.

Giving them a payment allows the dealer to manipulate the numbers to give you what you want, but still make a decent sized profit on their end.

Consider this a lesson learned - could you have done better? Likely.

But, you really like the car and the pleasure you get from it should last far longer than the financial aspects of the deal.

    See you in 3 years!

Thanks and hi again. So... with those numbers for the Subaru Forrester established-63% residual and MF .0060, it it possible to negotiate a discount off of the MSRP with O down? Are you hearing of this happening - of dealers leasing a car where payments + drive off + residual paied at the end could equal less than MSRP? Thanks!

Possibly - you absolutely want to negotiate a selling price as a discount from MSRP.

Thanks again. So, on the Forester Limited. I walked away from a dealership with little info, negotiation, and walked away from the dealer with a 324/mo, 324 walk-away, 36mo, 12K, 19715 residual lease on a 31294 MSRP car. Though some sites rate this as an excellent lease deal, I am at MSRP when all money that I have put into it are added up at the end of 36 months and so I feel like I am not quite there. Or am I off here?

Adding up your payments and comparing it to MSRP is irrelevant, and not really indicative of a good deal. There are finance charges to consider on a lease, just like on a loan. Plus, you aren't paying the residual at lease end, you are turning the car back in. Like the saying, can't see the forest for the trees.

$324/mo. on a $31,294 MSRP vehicle is excellent.

Thanks! Now I see that there is a incentive on the 2017 Forester $289/mo, 0 down, 0 due at signing, 12K on the MSRP 30070 model. This is an even better deal proportionally for that MSRP. We have a slew of the upgraded Limited models (MSRP 31294) in my area. Is there anything keeping a dealer from applying the same deal to the higher MSRP model? Can they get the same incentive from Subaru? If the same exact deal is applied proportionally to the higher MSRP car, monthly payments = 300.76...
Or can they honestly use 'the deal only applies to that exact model' argument? Thanks!

Keep in mind.. your quote included all taxes and fees. Advertised deals don't include a lot of that.

But, if all the models are Limited, then yes, you should be able to get the same percentage discount on any of them.

Those are ads, not offers. Read the fine print - likely excludes taxes, fees, etc.

You can negotiate a deal similar to, or better than, those advertised payments by getting a better discount from sticker.

Thanks, guys!!! Negotiating a lower sticker will be tricky for me...they have already discounted the car 5.77% from MSRP, and to get the the payments I want, I would have to haggle an extra 2.81% (very technical, I know...) I suspect that getting a car with such a moderate/low profit margin (5.54%) at just over 8.5% discount from the MSRP will be a battle, perhaps even if they want to move them out...

You'll find out pretty quickly if the dealer is willing to shave more off the price.

Hi. I just received a lease quote from a dealership in CT for the 2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium w/All-Weather 10k miles for 36mos. With a downpayment of $3k down, I was quoted $298 a month. I didn't do any research before I visited the dealership (and didn't commit to anything while I was there), but now that I'm home and researching, that seems really high. Now that I'm doing some research, could you provide me with the MF and residual? Thank you!

Hi Michaell...maybe you could provide me with some more insight...I just crunched some quick numbers using an online lease tutorial. Say worst case scenario I paid $27,509 (the MSRP at the dealer) and $1,200 in fees, while putting down $3,000. Plugging in the .00080 and 66% you provided, shouldn't my monthly payment only be $259 opposed to the $298 I was quoted? See below for my math. Maybe I'm missing something. Also, I have excellent credit (800+) if that factors into it.

    2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium w/All-Weather - Automatic Transmission - 10k miles for 36mos.

    Residual Value off of $27,509 MSRP @ 66% residual percentage = $18,156

    Negotiated Sale Price of $27,509 + $1200 (fees) = $28,709

Trade In and Downpayment = $3,000

    Adjusted Cost ($28,709 - $3,000) = $25,709

    Depreciation Amount ($25,709 - $18,156) = $7,553

    Base Payment ($7,553 / 36) = $209

    Rent Charge ($25,709 + $18,156 x lease factor of ~ 0.0008) = $35

    Pretax Lease Payment ($209 + $35) = $244

    Total Monthly Payment ($244 x Sales Tax 6.35%) = $259

I'm about a $1 off your calculations .... ask the dealer what the adjusted cap cost is they are using. If different from the $25,709, find out what they've added.

Or, they are marking up the MF.

Your math is correct. (but, you'd have to put up the first payment, along with the $3000).
But, the dealer might be marking up the money factor (add $22/mo.+tax), and they might have added other charges.

No support for 24 month lease. Do you want 36/15?

Does that mean it's not possible to get a 24 month lease?  Or you just don't have the numbers available for it?  And yes I would like the 36/15 please. Thank you!

No, it means the numbers are so bad that they aren't worth telling you.
