VW TDI Settlement - buying a TDI now

With my buyback scheduled for January 17th, I started shopping today. Many possibilities, need time sort them out...

I'm not planning to use the $ to buy another car or pay off the Murano. Will probably just treat it like my other investments.

I lied, my buyback amount is $29.987K, not 29.8K. Quite a difference there. Now it really is just a smudge under $30K.

This VW in over 18K miles has been pretty darn good to us. Great mileage and no problems other than the guzzling of Blue-Def; which might be attributable to a less than full top-off at the 10K mile service. The tires will be worn out after the next Summer, so it's not a bad time to trade it in late January.

I recently wrote about how great DSG transmissions have been to me in terms of reliability and durability, I forgot the Kia. It'll take me awhile to associate dual clutch transmissions with Kia; the company that used to make tin can Sephias.

So the new total on DSG transmissions with zero failures is:

106,000 + miles on A3.
48,000+ miles on S4
18,000+ miles on Golf Wagen TDI
11,500+ miles on TTS
4,400+ miles on Optima

I read the article, and I think the title should be "Lawyer asks Judge to make sure the 3.0 settlement requires no stripping of car parts." Not sure about the lawyer's interpretation that the buyback was to have cars returned in the condition they are driven. Don't remember reading that line anywhere.

The JSW is gone. Process went as smoothly as possible considering that there isn't really a script or precedent for such a thing. The buyback rep said she was doing about eight a day and that a lot of the dealers were running out of free storage space for the TDIs. I signed a limited POA and odometer disclosure statement and handed over the keys and title, she made some pictures of the car, and introduced me to the sales manager before I had an Uber take me home.

Just waiting on the email so I can have the funds wired.

Apparently I received the payments e-mail on Monday, but missed it. It was in my "clutter" but I expected that - I just scanned the e-mails too quickly and missed it.

For those awaiting that e-mail, it comes from "Chase Payments." You have to set up an account with them if you don't already have one, which is mildly annoying, but it takes about a minute.

So, funds should be transferred within 2-3 days now.

By the way, I was browsing ads for all VWs last night and came upon a 2015 Golf S TDI listed for about $17k, from a dealer. I got a little excited, looking up the buyback amount, which came to $23k.

Then I went to the dealer website to see if I could find a carfax and other info. Then found that the car was accurately listed there as "TSI" (it was indeed listed as TDI on cars.com).

Took me about 15 minutes. All is well. Got an immediate e-mail from the claims website.

Once the profit is in hand I think the minor delays will mean little to you all playing the game. As to people that actually fell victim to the situation, I really see a lot of downsides to waiting, even though there are some upsides. I'd like to get it turned in no later than January 2017.

My wife has two key remotes that both indicate low batteries; got to turn it in before the remote batteries die! Odd they didn't last very long. I bet the sensors on the doors drain the remotes more than they used to.

chatted with my Nieces husband at Christmas. He bought a Golf TDI about 2 weeks before the stuff hit the fan. Turned out to be a good deal after all. He got his appointment for 2nd week of January. Car is stashed in garage until then. Seems he got a minor hit in a parking lot recently, and is now paranoid to take it out!

They showed up with a brand new (to them) 2016 Subaru Forester. Bought Friday of last week in VA (I saw it Sunday in upstate NY).

Got the JPMorgan Chase email and scheduled the transfer to my checking account. Not impressed with the security--it basically assumes that anyone who intercepts or otherwise has access to the email is entitled to the funds. I would have taken a paper check if it hadn't been implied that my buyback date would be later on account of that.

I wonder how many people will have malware on their computer that allows a hacker to access these emails and divert the funds to their own bank account?

Anyway, pouring myself a bourbon on the rocks to celebrate.

My buyback appointment is on January 17th, and I'm still driving the Passat TDI every day. Just saw over in the Accord prices paid forum that they have an extra $900 trunk money on Accords this week. I need to go do down and drive one.

It's not a bank that is affiliated with Chase, so I'm surprised it was so quick.

If you have a buyback date and have the funds to float both, it certainly isn't a terrible idea. 

I am going shopping with my BIL and SIL tomorrow for their replacement.

Wow, I guess NADA prefers Audi's to VW, and/or Audi just holds its value much better than VW. Other than a massive gap in resale value, I can't explain how a '13 A3 gets more back than a '15 VW Wagen TDI SE.

Unless..... how overpriced were those A3 TDI's new?

I think it's a bit opposite of that, andres. Vehicles with a higher rate of depreciation will have a better margin on the buyback because their value differential between Sept 15 and Aug 16 was greater than some other models, such as Passat. And, even if the rate of depreciation on the Audi vs. similar VW model was the same, the higher MSRP on the Audi will mean that the actual dollar spread is greater. (For example, a car worth $28K versus one worth $23K on 9/15 would net an additional $500 on buyback if they both depreciated 10% during that span.)

Buyback scheduled. January 13 at 4pm. I had to end up scheduling it at Audi of Tacoma (an hour south of Seattle) because it was the earliest. The next available appointments in Seattle or Bellevue were after February 2nd, which happens to be baby's due date.

I would have had to take the 13th in Tacoma or wait until late February, which seemed less than ideal.

Nice! Still, an hour isn't bad at all, and the best part is that you're now scheduled!

Interestingly, Friday the 13th is a lucky day for my wife and I. Our first date was Friday the 13th.

Got the Chase email at 8:27 pm, tonight. Of course, the deadline for today's business is 8:00 pm, ET. lol
Anyway, the funds are on the way to my bank. non-Chase, so I'll guess Tuesday or Wednesday.
