HMMMM?! Never looked at that tag before. Mine (delivered in mid-November) was built in June 2006... and I now have a copy of that TSB... ;)

I have the part number written down at work, but I'm pretty sure I found it in the "Audio" section of this forum. There are 3 different part numbers depending on your color interior.
  • azgrandazgrand Member Posts: 50
Thanks for the heads-up. Mine was manufactured June 14th. I haven't noticed any noise, so the fix may have already been performed. I'll check with the dealer.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Oh...I'm convinced it was a defect. However, as long as I have the warranty, I'm really not going to get upset about it. I certainly would hope that a car costing $40K+ wouldn't have a wood grain steering wheel that would start chipping. I would have a serious attitude if it did!
  • azeradriverazeradriver Member Posts: 1
I had the same problem with the steering wheel and the dealership replaced it. I am now having the same problem with the new steering wheel. Perhaps there is a problem with all of them?

    RE:3593
My new steering wheel has not come in yet.(2 weeks) I will advise parts manager of your continued problem to determine if he can find out any more information. His local Hyundai regional manager claims that he knows of no problem, although they have not acknowledged any problems with any component.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Since I didn't notice the problem with my steering wheel until about the 7th-8th month, I'm hoping to not see the same problem with the new one. I've had the new one for about a month now and I haven't seen the defect pop up. However, I shall be keeping a sharp eye on it.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
WOW!!! 2 weeks, huh? From the day the service manager looked at mine, he called me about 5 days later to inform me that the new steering wheel was in and to contact him to set up a day to get it installed.

Keep the pressure on them and good luck!

I'm still trying to determine what, if anything, is located behind the vertical panel in the little area forward of the ash tray door. I would like to install a 12V receptacle on this vertical for my Ipod transmitter. I now must keep the ash tray door open and use the cigarette lighter receptacle located next to the ash tray.
I am concerned that there is some computer module located in that area.
Dealer was unable to provide any information.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Why not use the 12V receptacle located inside the center console under the arm rest???
  • floridabob1floridabob1 Member Posts: 1,190
    RE: 3598
The Ipos holder/transmitter that I have is designed to be in view of the driver, to allow the use of functions such as changing songs or albums.
The unit works great from the ashtray socket, but would look neater if the door covering the ashtray could be left closed.
The area behind the ashtray would be perfect if the installation in that area is possible.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Trust me, you can make it happen. I use the socket in the center console to charge my phone and my phone is able to rest in the coin tray in front of the ashtray. Even with a thin cable such as that for a phone charger, the lid to the console is able to close all the way and even latch.

Another cool reason to use that one is when you exit the car and don't take the unit, you can just tuck it away in the center console!

I'll be digging behind my console in the next couple weeks to finsih the install of my stereo system. I'll let you know what I find.

Well, I did it. Purchased a new '06 SE over the weekend. Base car with mats in Aubergine. Here's the particulars:
    MSRP: $25,080
    INVOICE: $23,186
    INCENTIVES: $ 2,500; $386 add'l dealer discount(*)
    SELL PRICE: $20,300
    PA SALES TAX:$ 1,218
    TAGS: $ 97
    OTD: $21,615

(*) Due to the fact that he had to locate the car and has to put 300 miles on it to get it to me.

Congratulations tictac3! Welcome to the Azera family!!!
  • tictac3tictac3 Member Posts: 78
Thanks, allmet33. Hopefully, it will be my pleasure. I would have loved to buy a Limited w/ all of the B&Ws but I recently puchased a new home so I now have a mortgage. Our old home had been paid off for the past five years so I had to be more frugal with my auto purchase. Looked at leasing an '07 Azera, an '07 Altima 3.5 SE and a Camry LE-6. BUT, with the deal I got on the '06 Azera, it blew away the leases.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Trust me, I know exactly what position you are in. Even with the SE, I think you'll get plenty of driving enjoyment from it. Also, by being a new homeowner, that warranty will give you peace of mind in not worrying about car repairs either. Now THAT...is priceless!!!

Are you planning on any upgrades to your Azera?
  • drdonrsdrdonrs Member Posts: 164
I also want to extend a hearty welcome to the Azera family tictac. In spite of all the "problems" that are expressed on the boards, I am sure you will find it one awesome car. We have been driving Acura TL's for the past several years (leased) and now own an Azzy Limited which my wife drives, primarily, and I drive an 06 Sonata LX6. Couldn't be happier! Best of luck and many miles of safe and happy driving. You can't beat the price and the value. :)

    RE: 3600
Because of the design of the holder/Transmitter the unit can not be attached to an "extention cord". It is supported by a flexible, though firm wire that plugs directly into the socket.
I am in no great rush, and will wait to hear if you can spot any room behind the panel that I referred to.
I hope that you can see it as it is under that small storage space that has the opening door.
  • tictac3tictac3 Member Posts: 78
Thanks, allmet33 and drdonrs. I promise I'll be good to my new addition. As for any upgrades, definitely a moon roof by the Summer. For now, I probably will add heated seats (for my wife) and re-install the Infinity sub-woofer that I had in a previous car (300M).
  • tictac3tictac3 Member Posts: 78
... for not including the Azera under "Luxury Center." I looked at the "research a car" section of Edmunds and found only the Volvo S40 in the $15-$25K section. REALLY!!! The S40 is considered luxury and the Azera is not. What gives, Pat and Karens?
  • gamlegedgamleged Member Posts: 442
Drop 'em an e-mail on that thought!...
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Word of caution. Be careful when installing your infinity subwoofer. If you plan on tapping into the signal from the factory subwoofer, make sure you use a hi/lo converter and attenuate all the way down or you will be frying voice coils. Trust me, I found out the hard way after frying 3 subs.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Ahh ha! I see your dilemma. Time and weather permitting, I'll be getting in there pretty soon as the turn off pop is getting annoying and I really need to install the converter to take care of that. So, as soon as I get in there and handle that...I'll have an answer for you.

Actually, the CarSpace hosts are not involved with what happens on Edmunds.com. The best way to get your concern to the right people is to use the Help link at the very bottom of the page. Go to the Contact Us tab and ask there. Let us know what happens!

"Wood" is starting to chip or delaminate big time. A 1/2" piece is now missing.

Don’t get me wrong with what I’m about to say because I am not a Hyundai basher, really just the opposite. You see, I have 2 of them, 05’ XG 350 (mine) and 06’ Sonata LX (wife’s).

When we were looking in June 2006 when we bought the Sonata, I was showing her the Azera and the Sonata and was pointing out the differences (like you really have to, huh). My wife doesn’t really care about cars and as long as they are reliable and the color isn’t obnoxious, I’m allowed to make the car buying decisions. She notices the price difference and says, “it’s up to you, I don’t care but that “plastic” on the steering wheel looks a little cheezy, I like the steering wheel on your car better (all leather) and for that matter the one on the Bonneville (95’, all leather) that we’re getting rid of”. Not being a total dope I said “yeah, and since you don’t care you just saved us at least $5K”.

I think this is a classic case of designers getting too cute with designing. Putting plastic trim on a steering wheel can’t be as comfortable to the hand as all leather under any circumstances. I noticed that your bio says you live in Florida, I’ll bet this can’t be very comfortable when first getting into your car after being park and cooking in the sun for even a half-hour.

I think it’s a shame that they put plastic trim on the steering wheel and, yes, if it’s delaminating it is surely do to a design defect and or cheap materials which isn’t helped by the banging of rings on that “plastic”

When the time comes to replace my XG-350 (given it gives me good service) I wouldn’t hesitate to buy an Azera, I just hope by then they go to “all leather”. My neighbor bought an Azera this past summer and loves it (why not, it’s a great car) ….. guess what, he “hates” the steering wheel and he hasn’t had any problems with it ……yet. In fact, I don’t even want to tell him about the problem, he’s a very picky guy and would probably be short of breath if I did. He’s too nice of a guy so I’m going to keep my mouth shut.

BTW, ‘floridabob1’, I’m going to be in your neck of the woods, first week in February, visiting my brother who retired to Delray Beach last year. I hope I don’t see you stuck to that ‘plastic steering wheel’ in a parking lot somewhere. ;)

jmonroe...I thought the same thing you did when I first saw the Azera. I questioned the plastic faux wood trim thinking that there is now way it could be comfortable. I will say that when the interior is really, really hot, the plastic area isn't great to grab initially, but it cools down rather quickly. When it's cold though...I wish they would have a heated steering wheel feature for these winter months.

My '02 Sonata had the all leather steering wheel and I loved it! The bad thing about the Azera steering wheel is that you don't want to put a steering wheel cover on it because then it'll look crazy.

My steering wheel started chipping around month number 7 and it slowly progressed from there. However, it was taken care of as a warranty fix and it was no big deal...just a slight inconvenience. Some may get lucky and enver experience the problem, but there will be plenty that will until Hyundai comes up with a solution. Either go all leather, use a better laminating process or use real wood (yeah, right).

As far as your neighbor goes, you can mention the forums here and let him find out on his own. It didn't deter my feelings for the car in the slightest bit.
  • joe131joe131 Member Posts: 998
you say plastic trim on a steering wheel can’t be as comfortable to the hand as all leather under any circumstances?

Hahaha. Of course some people will like that feel better than leather. I do sometimes. It is a throwback to when steering wheels were made of wood with a high gloss PLASTIC varnish over the wood. Very smooth slick luxurious feel, and nice looking too for those of us who like the look of wood.

But those annoying little chips take the joy out of it for me.

    RE: 3615
The dealership replaced my wheel this week.
Will the new one peel? Probably.
The wheel actually feels good to the hand.
I have had a car with a real wood wheel, and loved it.
Maybe someone will come up with a real wood aftermarket wheel that can accomodate the various remote switches.

Ahhh ….. the laws of physics at work. Now that your hands are as warm or warmer than the steering wheel, the steering wheel doesn’t feel so bad. I always liked those physics courses, they seem to explain the real world. ;) . Although it can’t be any worse than the solid plastic steering wheels prior to the use of leather wrapped steering wheels. It’s just that once you’ve had better, you never want to go back.

As far as your neighbor goes, you can mention the forums here and let him find out on his own.

I better not do that. You don’t know this guy, if he hears about any problems he’ll be up all night wondering when it’s going to affect him. Might even call me, right then and there, to get my opinion. Nope, I’m not going there. :(

It didn't deter my feelings for the car in the slightest bit.

If this is the worst problem the Azera has, I’ll take a dozen.

To be honest, I'd rather deal with it when it's hot as opposed to when it's cold. Lately, we've had temps regularly dip into the high 20's and low 30's at night (if not colder) and going out in the morning, the last thing I want to grab is that steering wheel. It's like wrapping your hand around an icicle that doesn't melt!!!

That's the only reason why I mentioned a heated steering wheel is that it would be a hot feature that those of us up north could really apprecaite!!! ;)

I know, I know...I could wear gloves, but I don't like wearing gloves. So that's out.

Yeah...better to keep your neighbor in the dark until he comes to you talking about it, then you can just tell him that you've heard that same thing happening to other Azera owners and he can simply get it taken care of with his service department, under warranty of course! ;)

To be honest, I was really considering how to convince my wife to get one for herself. However, with a new addition to the family on the way...we have our eyes on that new Saturn CUV (Outlook) as our next purchase. :shades:
  • joe131joe131 Member Posts: 998
    20's? 30's? That's not cold.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
It is for me, as DC is the farthest North I've lived as an adult. Granted, I've travelled to Cleveland during winter so I know another level of cold.

Just like going down to FL and hearing them complain of a cold spell that dips down to the 40's! LMAO Yeah, okay...gimme 40 all day long! :P
  • sundevilssundevils Member Posts: 100
It has been below freezing in Carlsbad many times this winter, including several mornings in the 20s. And yet my Azera steering wheel is never cold. How do I do it? I keep my car garaged.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Oh yeah...a garage DEFINITELY has it's benefits, but what about when it's been parked outside for a couple to few hours? ;) Your garage can't do anything for you then.
  • eclaixpeclaixp Member Posts: 46
LOL, we are already freezing at 55 which we recently got here in Miami. We would stay home at 40... :P
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Funniest thing I ever saw down there (one trip in January) was a news report talking about a cold snap coming through. It was going to be in the low 40's and people were advised to cover their plants outside so they wouldn't perish. The next morning...drove around to see small trees, shrubs and plants with pillow cases, towels and sheets tied or draped over them. :)

You guys are killing me. It's almost 80 degrees here in West Palm Beach, FL.
Pardon me while I jump into the pool.
  • azgrandazgrand Member Posts: 50
I think the faux wood on the Azera wheel looks much better than the light colored (faux wood I guess) wheel in the Avalon. I don't mind it at all, as long as it doesn't start peeling.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
The darker wood look is definitely better in my opinion as well. I wished they offered it with the black interior, that was one thing that swayed me against the black interior to be honest.
  • gamlegedgamleged Member Posts: 442
The dark "wood" with the tan interior and the Aubergine paint all around helped seal the deal for me. And as regards "cold steering wheels," my two Winters in Greenland and another two Winters in the Italian Alps (well, very nearby) have inured me to the worst Nature can throw at me in that department.. so long as I don't now have to handle steering wheels outside of SW Florida, that is... :P
  • w9cww9cw Member Posts: 888
Just like you Florida-types to rub it in during the winter . . . only kidding Bob. Here in central Illinois it's currently 2 above zero, cold, but not as cold as it normally is during this time of the year. . . and, I can assure you I would rather put my ungloved hands on a cold steering wheel, than a blistering hot one during the summer.

    RE: 3631
Do you mean that your car didn't come with a temperature controlled steering wheel?
  • gamlegedgamleged Member Posts: 442
The control for that is difficult to locate, it's right next to the headlight-washer and headlight-wiper switches...

I always leave mine in the "on" position.

Has anyone had the occassion to remove the center console from their Azera for any reason? If so, how difficult was the job?

don't know, but, let me know, the one on the steering wheel is the worse, should have made it brushed like the door handles.
