I live in Florida and currently drive a 2012 335i Convertible that is at the end of its financing. The dealer (about a 3 hour drive away) has offered $21,000 for the 2012, which matches a CarMax offer I got for the car. This car has 31k miles, but got a new engine at 22k miles because of the BMW recall.
I am looking at the following:
2017 BMW 440i, 2dr rear wheel drive convertible: MSRP Base $57,300
Cold weather package 1,050 Driver Assistance Package 950 Technology Package 2,750 Driver Assistance Plus 1,700 M Sport Package 2,550 Style 442 M Wheels 900 Paint 700 Total Options $10,600 “Regional” 240 Destination 995 Market Value Selling Price $69,135
36 months, 10,000 miles per year 61% residual, 0.00139 money factor (reverse engineered) $824 / month cash down: Negative equity on 2012 $3,600 First month $824 Balance Due $1554 Cash Down $5,978
I’m also getting back about $1k on a mechanical failure service contract I purchased for the car, so net net to me, I see this as eliminating the $3,600 negative equity and getting into the new car at about $550.
Good deal?
MF this month is .00134, 36/10 residual is 61%.
Leaving the negative equity and cash out of the equation, your MSRP and adjusted price gives me a payment of $737/mo, before tax. Tax rate of 6% (guess on my part) takes the payment to $781/mo; that's a long way from the $824/mo quote you got.
You aren't "eliminating" the negative equity; the cash down is addressing it.
Ask the dealer what the adjusted cap cost is - if higher than $63,610, find out what's been added (for example, I don't see the $925 acquisition fee mentioned anywhere).
And - I gotta ask - why does this Florida car come equipped with the cold weather package?
I finally got to the same answer as you, so thanks!
The dealer added about $1200 for taxable fees, doc fee, sales tax & licensing. This brought the monthly rate (including 6% Florida taxes) to $824.
I know you recommend adding any non-government fees into the cap cost, and not making the cap cost reduction. I'm a little indifferent, but I may do as you suggest and paying the taxes up front.
I'm going to confirm the details of the cash down with the dealer, and then I think I'm ready to move forward.
As for the Cold Weather Package, well, it's already on the car I am looking at, so there's not really a way to get it out. Also, we love the heated seats! I'm originally from the Northeast, but after 10 years of living here, I am a bone fide, thin-skinned Floridian. There are about 10 days a year when the heated seats are a nice add. Otherwise, it's just money not well spent!
I really appreciate your help. I think I am getting a good deal and I hope you agree!

If you're comfortable with the negotiated price, you should be good to go.
Hi, i am looking at BMW 2017 x430i Convertible for 36 months 10/12K miles and i live in California. What would be the MF and Residual for this spec please ?
On a total MSRP of $69,257, with discount it came down to $64,410. With $4,000 as total drive off, got $806 (inc taxes) per month lease @ 36 months/10k miles, is this good ?
.00134 and 61% / 60%
What is the full breakdown of the $4000 up front cash? I'm pretty certain some of it is cap reduction (down payment), which we advise against.
Using your prices, as is, I get $759/mo before tax, $827/mo after (assuming a tax rate of 7.5%)
You are getting 7% off sticker, which is good for BMW.
Thanks for your response Michaell. I requested for breakdown of $4000 drive off and i am still waiting for their response.
Meanwhile i received the below quote from another dealer.
MSRP: 69257 Selling Price: 63716 (8% off)
0 Down payment
2494 (Basic Drive Off consisting of first payment, registration, bank fee, and tax)
36 months / 10K miles a year
759 a month plus + local sales tax on payment (California)
Do you think this is a good deal ? sorry to ask again as i am little off with these lease numbers

I found the car I wanted, a well appointed 440i convertible, no others with the same packages (M Package, Technology, Drivers Assistance and Drivers Assistance Plus) within at least 1,000 miles.
I negotiated a deal, including trade-in of my 2012 335i convertible, and put down the requisite deposit to hold the car. I was planning to make 7-hour the (round trip) drive tomorrow and execute the deal.
The salesman called me tonight to tell me the car I thought I was getting was sold/leased to another person! Plus, I have a balloon payment due on my 335i in a couple of weeks. I'm a little underwater with the current car.
Can you provide some guidance on my course of action? I'm definitely not asking or suggesting you give me legal advice.
I don't expect to lose value on the money factor or residual, and the same car can be built and delivered in 4-6 weeks. This is a big dealership in Florida with a lot of stroke. I guess I'm asking what you might think is appropriate for me to ask for to sweeten the deal given their snafu?

If you are leasing the new car, I'd ask for more consideration off the sticker price to address the snafu. Be polite, but firm - you gave them a deposit to hold the car, after all.

I get $552/mo with those prices.
Do you have a full breakdown of the up front costs?
Any other concerns Michaell with the breakdown of fees I showed you? You still get to $552 per month? Total discount off MSRP is 11%. Thank you again, and happy holidays.

If none of the prices or fees have changed, then the payment stays the same.
However, CT calculates sales tax against the monthly payment, while NY assesses sales tax against the sum of the payments and collects the entire amount up front.
I'd get clarity from the dealer how this is working, given you are making the transaction in CT but will register the car in NY.

I get $560/mo plus tax with those prices.
DMV costs in CA are roughly 1.1% of MSRP.
I'll find out, but I think they're rolling the $995 delivery fee into my payment. Does that seem right?
My current lease is going to end this June and I am considering putting an order for a custom 430i. Last time I leased a 428i. It was in stock and I managed to get 5% off of the MSRP. I was wondering what the discount range is if I want to put an order for a custom build. Any suggestions? The MSRP based on the website in roughly 59K.
Are there any incentives given this will be the second car I am leasing from BMW?

"Delivery Fee"? The only fees I'm aware of in CA are the destination fee, which is part of the MSRP and should not be broken out, the acquisition fee, which is imposed by the bank and is $925, and the doc fee, which is capped at $80 max in CA.

WA taxes the monthly payment, so your tax amount doesn't matter.
MF is bumped a bit from the base of .00134.
The math is correct. MF bump is costing you about $18/mo.
You are getting almost 10% off sticker, which is pretty good for a BMW.
BTW, $589/mo with base MF less MSD (.00085 MF net). We always recommend the MSD, if you have the up front cash.

I had this exact car for a loaner vehicle, today! Wow, is it nice!
.00134 MF and 60% residual is correct.
I get $585/mo with those numbers. (pretty close)
I'd want a breakdown of exactly what is going into the $3735. If there is anything hiding in the deal, it would be there. $585 payment $925 acq.fee $1550 tax
That's $2960.. $775 for DMV/dealer fees? I guess that's about right. I wouldn't want to put that much upfront. I'd roll the tax and acquisition fee into the lease.
Comments

Perhaps some credit at the parts department, too?

$559 - first payment
$925 - bank fee
$499 - dealer fee
$1484 - taxes
$105 - taxes on bank fee and dealer fee
$3572 - total
Anything jump out at you? $559 payment seem reasonable?
What is the tax rate and the MSRP, cap rate?
And what is the "dealer fee" for?
Dealer fees are restricted to $75 in NY.
That doesn't necessarily mean the total price will be cheaper there, though.

However, CT calculates sales tax against the monthly payment, while NY assesses sales tax against the sum of the payments and collects the entire amount up front.
I'd get clarity from the dealer how this is working, given you are making the transaction in CT but will register the car in NY.

I'm guessing the DMV fees are just registration cost? Any idea what they would be in California?

My current lease is going to end this June and I am considering putting an order for a custom 430i. Last time I leased a 428i. It was in stock and I managed to get 5% off of the MSRP. I was wondering what the discount range is if I want to put an order for a custom build. Any suggestions? The MSRP based on the website in roughly 59K.
Are there any incentives given this will be the second car I am leasing from BMW?
Thank you in advance.

In Washington (seattle area)..
The dealer is selling under the costco program which is 1500 over invoice, plus corporate and holiday program, they are getting the car $2000 under invoice.
Thoughts? I feel like this is still too high, but can't seem to get a deal like people who post online.

Wow, is it nice!
.00134 MF and 60% residual is correct.
I get $585/mo with those numbers. (pretty close)
I'd want a breakdown of exactly what is going into the $3735. If there is anything hiding in the deal, it would be there.
$585 payment
$925 acq.fee
$1550 tax
That's $2960.. $775 for DMV/dealer fees? I guess that's about right.
I wouldn't want to put that much upfront. I'd roll the tax and acquisition fee into the lease.
