You might just be right! Well, close, it would have been called a "1600-2" if it was an early one:

"The 1600-2 (the "-2" meaning "2-door") made its debut at the Geneva auto show in March 1966 and was sold through 1975, with the designation being simplified to "1602" in 1971."

Yup, that's a 1971 BMW 1600. The 1600-2 moniker was never used officially by BMW marketing but became common as a reference to the 1600's status as the basis for the car that did more to establish their cred and market success than anything they ever made.

Legend has it that it was BMW's US importer/distributor Max Hoffman who convinced BMW to install the 2 liter engine in the 1600-2 thereby creating the BMW 2002. Hoffman is also credited with the ideas behind the Porsche 356 Speedster and convincing Mercedes to sell a street version of their 300SL race car.

Not all of Hoffman's ideas were successful but even his failures such as the BMW 507
    were important.

I remember NLM Cityhopper. They became KLM City eventually and still fly here now.

If you book it says KLM on the paperwork but the smaller routes are all KLM City aircraft.

The real KLM does flights from Heathrow to Amsterdam while flights to Rotterdam or Eindhoven from Heathrow are sometimes in smaller planes that are KLM City - they only just stopped using the Fokker 70 and also had a whole operation with Fokker 50 turbo props as well - we flew on one of those from London City airport - which is really our local airport this side of town - to Amsterdam in about 2003.

I also thought it looked like a Maserati and I was right - it is a Kyalami, a fairly rare car of which only a few hundred were built during the dark days of DeTomaso ownership of Maserati.

Some Maserati enthusiasts do not even consider it a Maserati. It is, in reality, a rather thinly disguised DeTomaso Longchamp, but with a true Maserati 4.2/V8, and with chassis revisions. It was made from 1977-1982 and was also offered with a 4.9 engine. They made 150 of them altogether. As far as vintage Maserati coupes go, it isn't all that valuable, and shares the "poor sister" label with the Merak, another car most Maserati lovers pass over.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
I get why the DeTomaso based Kyalami is treated like a red-headed stepchild but why do they fault the Merak? Because it's not a Bora?

omarman hit it on the head--the Merak was not a V-8, and it was assembled with the build quality of an Italian TV dinner tray. The Merak still has value today but it's not the Maserati of choice for most enthusiasts.

The one '70s-era Maserati I like based on looks is the Bora, though I know it has a lot of Citroen design under the skin.

Ah yes - this is the Daimler Continental - a special version of the Daimler "One-0-Four" with this coachwork by Hooper - they did a similar version on a Bentley I believe as well. It was at the 1956 Earls Court motor show but remained a one off.

Interestingly that registration is from late 1962 in London so it was presumably re registered then.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
That's definitely a Daimler grille but I don't know the car.

    This is a Talbot Samba,

It is effectively a Peugeot 104Z but badged to sell through the French Talbot dealers (ex Simca) - they sold it here in the UK too. About 1980 I think.

There was also a Citroen using the same body called the LMA.

I was going to guess Wolseley but it doesn't quite measure up--or it's a very odd model. Maybe a Rover?

    Riley Kestrel/1300
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
It wouldn't make much difference - I can't bat in cricket either...

Also can't type - the Citroen equivalent of the Samba was the LNA....

The Riley was the last of the 1100 / 1300 family to be introduced and when they scrapped the make in 1969 it was the first to disappear.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481

A pair of Vauxhall Vivas on the left behind a Morris Minor Traveller woody wagon. A Ford Anglia parked ahead of the tricycle on the right.

All of those were not unusual to see on the roads here in the mid-60s when I was a kid. The Viva was especially popular as it benefited from the large Pontiac/Buick GM dealer network. It was also sold in a badge-engineered Envoy Epic version here by Chevrolet/Oldsmobile dealers.

  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
I think the Vivas are pretty much brand new and as the numberplate on the white one has a C suffix it is therefore likely to have been taken in 1963.

The Messerschmitt is quite clear and the Morris Minor Traveller - it didn't have the 1000 badge on the right hand rear door so is either an earlier Minor or the badge is missing.

If you tap on the photo it does open out much bigger - at least it does for me - and there are a few other cars uptake street which are clear enough to see possibly.

I had forgotten the Viva was the Epic in Canada - was that also sold in the US ? I saw a Vauxhall Envoy ( a first series Victor) at a car show last year which may be the only one in Europe as that was sold in Canada and the chap had bought it and shipped it from there...

I would guess the wagon parked ahead of the Morris is a Ford 100E Squire though I cannot be 100% on that. The more upmarket sedan parked ahead of that intrigues me - might it be a Wolseley 4/44 or 15/50?

Yes - its a Wolseley - you can see the numberplate above the boot handle whereas it is below the bumper on an MG Magnette. The two - tone Farina car in front of that is another Wolseley - a 16/60.

And the 100E Estate is either a Squire or the cheaper Escort....
