Yup, that's a 1992 VW Passat but it's a Canadian spec model that was never made available in the US market, a Passat Syncro (AWD) G60 (VR6).

I recall nearly buying a Passat wagon in the mid-90s, if they'd offered the Syncro G60 version I might've ordered one (eventually I got a Audi A4 Avant Quattro/2.8).

Interesting photo, it's from the late 50s or early 60s based on the Convair 440 airliner/executive aircraft.

The car is a Lancia Flamina Berlina (sedan). According to Wikipedia it debuted in 1957 as the replacement for the Aurelia and was produced until 1970. Most Flaminias were two door coupes or convertibles with Pininfarina bodies but the bodies for the Berlinas though styled by PF were built by Lancia.

Like most pre-Fiat ownership Lancia the Flaminias were considered sophisticated and well built autos, unfortunately they were not popular enough t keep Lancia from falling into the hands of the Fiat Group which eventually sucked all the distinctiveness and quality out of one of Italy's oldest and most regarded automakers.

Delta was still flying some of those CV440's in the early 70's. Convairs were pretty stout 2 engine propliners.

Holding my mirror up, it looks like a '73-ish 2002 turbo...which one can tell from the fender flares anyway.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Yup, it's a 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo, the fastest variant of the fabled 2002. The backwards lettering was a gimmick, supposedly to warn those who might see one in their rearview mirror(s) that they should move over :s

A planeload of us, in US Army uniform, arrived at Heathrow in '67 and upon entering the building we met an elderly gentleman who was a custodian sweeping the floor and who was probably a WW2 Vet because he leaned his broom against the wall and saluted each of us individually as we passed by him. It is an unforgettable welcome to the UK.

Only 1,672 of those made, and a nice one will cost you $85K on up. Pretty fast in its day but not so much by modern standards. Perhaps 170HP and 0-60 in the 7 second range. Much like a modern Mini in those specs.

Yes, that is the late unlamented Daimler SP250 Dart an extraordinarily ugly car with strong influences from America 1950s styling. Check out the fins!>

The Dart had what all of us sports car guys really wanted, a small Hemi V8 under the hood. Unfortunately it was expensive and flimsy as well as ugly so it sold poorly.

The maker, Daimler was a subsidiary of Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) whose motorcycles enjoyed some popularity in this country in the 50s and 60s.

When Daimler was sold to Jaguar in the mid 60s the new owners discovered that the little V8
cost more to make than Jag's advanced twin cam straight six so they stopped making the SP250 in favor of rebadged versions of the Jag Mk.II saloon.

Did I mention that it was ugly. Later versions had optional bumpers

Ugly, yes, but a reasonably competent car for the amateur racer of the day. It was originally called "Dart" but Dodge protested so it became SP250. Somewhat rare car with just over 2600 made 1959-1964. Actually fairly desirable car in the collector car market, normally selling for $50,000 on up.

They're easy to forget since they were seldom seen on this side of the Atlantic. I'm not sure I've ever seen one myself in the metal...er...glass. They had fiberglass bodies

So does that Daimler have any relation to the Daimler British cabs? I figured it probably wasn't a Sunbeam because you don't usually throw easy pitches!

Yes Daimler made everything from trucks to limos. I believe at one time Daimler was a favored ride of British royalty.

They are interesting cars--fiberglass bodies, hemi-V8, and they were raced. Not quite the mutt it looks like.

actually, you are right. it is too big for a Javelin.

That isn't a custom, it's a bone stock but a "special edition", one of those baroque
makeovers that US makers thought would entice buyers away from imports, Ha!

Those wheels certainly aren't bone stock. I also doubt that is a Kenosha factory paint job.

My bad, should've realized the big front battering ram was gone.

The car is a 1978 AMC Matador Barcelonacomplete w half padded roof, pleated upholstery, opera windows and other adornments of awful 1970s domestic design.

    That's a Rover P6 V8 AKA Rover P6 3500 (early 1970s). Naturally it's powered by the aluminum block Buick-Rover V8.

For some reasson that one lacks the silly multiple hood scoops seen on some versions.
