Yikes! Imagine the handling and braking that 'not just a scooter' had! 24 cubic inches = 400 cc, so a pretty big engine.

Think we may have had this here before, but I just took this pic 2 mins ago and had to share such a rare real-world sighting.

    Lada 1200/1300/1500
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Wow, a rare sighting in the USA, the Soviet era version of the doughty Fiat 124 sedan. I can't quite read the numbers next to the word "Lada" so it's either a 1200 or a 1300.

Is that a New Jersey plate? if so this would be a grey market car since Ladas were never officially exported to there US. Wikipedia sez the Lada name only appeared on cars exported from the USSR. The Russian versions were labeled VAZ-2101

Yep, the Lada badge makes it an export model. They were exported to a number of places, including Canada (although this one might predate Canadian exports, could be from Europe). Definitely a NJ plate. I suspect these were more durable than their Fiat equivalent, plenty of these still on harsh Russian roads. I kind of like them.

This one appears to be in beautiful shape. The badge is 1200 S

My cheapskate brother bought a new Lada 1500 in the early '80s because it seemed a good deal. Just an awful car. It never ran right and the Russian mechanic at the dealer told him the carb would never work correctly as they were all built with a design flaw. They also had a tendency to rust - apparently the Soviets didn't use salt in the winter like we did - and the build quality was as sketchy as you might expect. You simply do not see these up here any more despite the numbers sold back then.

First glance at the shape reminded me of 80s Impulse hatch, but that's not it.

I think the silver hatch is a volvo. But I can't recall the model name.

Volvo 480 coupe? '89 or so? Never sold in US.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,392
that is it. I kept thinking 440, but that was a different model.

I think it may be the "480ES", to be precise.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,740
Wow. That does say Volvo on the wheel. I thought Nissan so convinced myself the wheel confirmed Nissan. I never know Volvo made a Japanese hatch. ;b

IIRC, that Volvo was built in Holland in a joint partnership with, I think, Mitsubishi.

The 480 was a really clean design. Story was that being built in the Netherlands the exchange rate at the time would have made it too expensive to sell in N.A. Too bad.

It was made in the DAF plant, Volvo merged with them.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,431
Good looking cars, but IIRC "Car" magazine had unkind words for the 400 series Volvos.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Well, it is a KLM Fokker. Wanna upset a Dutchman - call it a Netherlands DC9. I think the Dutch have made Volvo's for awhile now.

Being into old aircraft also, I'll pass along the interesting name of the NLM City Hopper.
    Nederlandse Luchtvaart Maatschappij.

NLM City Hoppers ran from 1966 to 1991.

a different picture of the little red car with the plane. Darned hard to find a shot that does not include the badging in it!

I'll take a WAG at Hillman Imp. I don't know what that badge on the side is, though. And the wheels seem a bit more modern than would be found on an Imp.

For andy's pic, I'll pick off what looks like a 61 Impala 2 door HT, third car back, middle row.

I wonder about that '61 Pontiac with what looks like a tiny tyke in the drivers seat.

    Ah, there's a '53 Pontiac in there.
  • omarmanomarman Member Posts: 2,702
Traffic appears to have stopped. Third car back from the Corvair, Grandpa is standing next to his (mystery) car. I think the Pontiac driver may also have exited his car and the tyke slid over on the bench seat to get a better look at whatever is going on.

The old 'pick up/drop off line' at school, I'd guess. Some things never change...
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,431
I think the car grandpa is standing might be a 46-48 Dodge or Plymouth.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Looks like about a 1957 Olds behind the Poncho and the tailfin of a '57 Chevy wagon on the right exiting frame.
