I remember back in the day car and driver did performance tests, I think top speed, and these were right up there, faster than corvettes. Duster 360s were the other hot rods of the day

There's a confusion about the names. The caption for it was 1979 Little Red Express Truck but like Kyfdx i recall "Li'l Red Wagon" and remember the name appearing on the side door but I've only found pix showing the Express Truck name>
There was a drag race version of the A100 called the "Lil Red Wagon"
i don't know if there was a production version. Color me confused
I have a soft spot for '67 Pontiacs (we had one when I was a kid) and that one looks great. Too bad it is a Chevy underneath the skin, Chevy powertrain and narrow-track chassis. The 2+2 models were always fairly uncommon here as I recall.
I like that kind of silver green looking color. Buddy had a 69 Mustang in something similar in color with a black vinyl top. Sharp looking car. 67 Pontiacs stand out because they often created a like it or not response back in those days. That's not a negative comment either. It reflects some design risk taking on a big GM car.
When I was stationed in Germany my First Sergeant popped into my office and said he was going to the PX for a while. I asked if he was going to get some snacks. He replied that he was going there to buy a car. So he left and I thought he was going to purchase a toy car or car model for one of the kids at the off post military housing. He returned empty handed. I asked "no car models available?" He said "Toys? This car is for me." I said I don't understand. He said he purchased a 1968 Tempest which will arrive in around 8 weeks. It did. He bought a car at the PX! I liked it. When I returned to the states, I bought a new '68 LeMans convertible. 350 engine - 4 on the floor. I loved it and drove it for 10 years.
When the first gen Javalin came out I saw it at a Cincinnati car show. They had a booth where you had a shifter and tried to match the shift points on a sound track of the red/white/blue race version. I matched on the ‘practice’ run, but missed a shift in the ‘real’ race. Bummer!
I am probably the only person here that owned not only a Gremlin, but also a Hornet.
Stick, maybe you should have grown up in Chicago or Milwaukee
I recall years back reading an article, I think in the WSJ, about how the Alabama State Police bought some 2nd gen Javelin's (the more angular styled one) as pursuit cars, but aerodynamically they were kind of a failure.
We used to see German Ford Taunuses in the 60's - purchased by British Army or RAF personnel bringing them back from Germany, and sometimes other stuff like Simcas, odd Opels, Borgwards etc - mostly RHD but then you could get most of those in RHD for Ireland and some colonial markets too.
Also, of course, especially in Eastern England or London, we used to see lots of US forces cars based here.
I can remember being confused when seeing a Sunbeam Rapier which had a British looking number plate (something like KBA 123) but with an international oval that read EAK
I asked the chap who was cleaning it and it turned out he had been working in Kenya for the government and had driven back through North Africa in it having bought it there. Probably not a journey that would have been so easy now.
You can see plenty of American design influence in the wraparound windshield, tail fins, big chrome grille and whitewalls. Later post-1959 1200 Spiders had more conservative but handsome styling by Pininfarina.
That would have either a flathead Continental engine or possibly a flathead with overhead valve conversion.
Maybe not. If you zoom in on the right front, it has a V8 badge.
Right you are! First V8 appeared in 1965!
Hmmm, my info has it that the first Chevy V8 for the Checker was available as an option in 1964. Also, I find there was a Chrysler V8 in the pre 1964 Checker Aerobus Limousine.
Need help with the funky Porsche-like thing I posted earlier. Here's some help: Back in the 50s a French fellow, Jaques Redele, decided to build a rally car out of this>
Redele replaced the sedan body with a 2+2 fiberglass coupe body but kept the rear engine configuration, beefed up the motor to 43hp (!) and scored a class victory at the 1956 Mille Miglia.
About 650 were eventually produced and the manufacturer is still in business.
The four-door I posted is a Renault 4CV, the coupe uses the chassis of the 4CV and some of the mechanicals and was sold under a different name. Hint: Rendele's company was eventually bought by Renault and today sells performance cars that are informally known as "French Porsches".
Is that enough for you to figure it out? Going...going...?
