    How about a 1952 Packard 400 Patrician?

Didn't the '52s have the two small tail lights on each side? When Shifty reoriented my memory I also remembered the those tail lights replaced the single vertical per side (the father of the kid next door had one of the vertical tail light ones (well used by then).

In mid-picture near the fire hydrant are a pair of 1956 Chevy BelAir H/Ts and near them are two cars that are definitely 1958 models. in the lane moving away we see a Ford Police unit with the rooftop "bubble gum machine". You can readily see that the tailights are quite different from those on the '57 Sunliner and just behind the Copper we see a Volkswagen Beetle with the rectangular window that replaced the smaller oval units. Both the Ford and the VW are 1958MY.

How about a 1952 Packard Mayfair. That's what this car is listed as. These are the
    taillights that fit.

I'm having trouble w the two-tone Pontiac wagon in the lower right. It has no chrome stripes it has the eyebrows over the headlights that were after 1957, same year the stripes were killed. New Pontiac cheif Bunky Knudsen thought they were too fussy. He was probably right but what year is that wagon?

FWIW NY 107 is still the main drag in Glen Cove and Old Brookville

This blow-up clearly shows the Packard convertible and a mid-50s Mercury just ahead of the police cruiser. You can also see a '58 Olds coming towards camera

I can't locate the Pontiac wagon we're talking about. Would someone help me find it?

Parked Caddy appears to be a 57 Coupe DeVille.

I don’t see the Pony wagon either! If they’re talking about the third car up on the right, I think that wagon is a Ford.

You can see it on the original pic, not the enlarged one.

I think the most interesting car in the picture, after the Packard _convertible_ is the 58? Buick?
that between the Ford pickup and the 55 Ford coming toward the camera, close to the Packard.
There is all of the chrome on the left rear flank--one of the high line models that's notorious now
    for conspicuous consumption of chrome!

I finally got back to the original picture that does have the Pontiac wagon.

This pic is from Glen Cove L.I., across the bay from where I went to HS, (It posted fine on Safari but I couldn't post any wording, had to switch back to Firefox to write this!!)

If you can spot the newest cars you'll have a pretty good idea of when it was taken. That nice '57 Bel Air h/t lacks wheel covers which seems rather odd for a late model car in a well-to-do commuter 'Burb. I wonder if they got hit by the "Midnight Auto Supply"?

The addition of the VR6 really transformed the Corrado. It was smooth and had a refined sound compared to the supercharged 4.

I was fortunate enough to drive a VR6-equipped GTI as a loaner vehicle, one time.

Man, that was a smooth and powerful engine.

I test drove a mid-90s Jetta with the VR6 and a stick. Hello, torque steer!! Much like driving a Viggen, though with less power.

    Laurence Welk?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Right name, wrong spelling, It's Lawrence Welk, popular bandleader of the 1940s and 50s posing in one of the cars given to him yearly by sponsor Dodge, a 1957 Dodge Custom Royal with all the options.

He was much beloved by the greatest generation and reruns of his show are probably still running somewhere. If like me , you're from a rock'n roll generation it was pure schmaltz.

These roadsters haven't been faked nearly as much as Speedsters, I bet it is real.

    That looks like maybe.....a Porsche 356A Cabriolet D, circa.....ummmm......1959?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,596
IIRC cabriolets have a body color painted A-pillar/windshield frame, roadsters have a metal frame.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
No, I don't think so for the Cabriolet D. For the other cabs, yes, but the "D" is quite rare. They only made 1330 of them, whereas the regular cabriolets maybe 3X as many.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,596
I notice a bodymaker tag on the fender, maybe that's a clue (I don't know enough to determine it).
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I'm pretty sure that's what it is, but you know, I'm open to enlightenment. It's got the overriders, the high chrome windshield that's chromed (Speedster has a smaller windshield as you know), windshield is curved on the edges.

The bodymaker tag is for Drauz which is why it's known as the Convertible D. Yes, it's pretty rare, 1335 built in 1959. As Shifty suggests the D was a variation on the similar looking 356A Speedster.

    1957 356A Speedster (Ruetter>

    1959 356A Convertible D (Drauz)>

There was also a 356B Roadster built by a Belgian coachmaker:

Confusing, huh, but if that's not confusing enough, Intermeccanica of Canada makes reproductions of both the Speedster and Convertible D and they are fabulous

Sounds like niche-seeking isn't a new thing for Germans.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Well you know it started with Max Hoffman, Porsche's NY-based importer who told them a stripped (Speedster) version would sell well because it would be cheaper and could do well in racing since it would be lighter. But by the late fifties someone decided the Speedster
was too bare-bones and the Convertible D with roll-up windows and a real convertible top was the result.

There were a lot of other variations in the 356 line. one of my favorites is the Porsche 356B
    Abarth Carerra GTL
. As the name suggested it was built for racing but in those days racing cars sometimes found their way to the street.

Anyone see anything that would determine whether that Galaxie (500) is an XL?

The Rose Cab looks like a '65 Dodge Coronet. I can't see any XL emblems on the Galaxie but it looks like it may have the lower tail light trim like this 1963 1/2 Galaxie 500.

I don't know if that was a trim piece for the XL also but it's not always seen on the Galaxie 500 either.
