Silver 4door is a mid 80s Chevy Citation, behind it a BMW 1600/2002.

The Citation looks spiffy with those wheels. I wonder what the '66/'67 Nova is doing there. Maybe one of the mechanics owned it.

Not my pic, but an interesting shot of 2nd St in Casper, WY around 1970. Lots to see here.

69 big Ford beside the Beetle at left.

And a very rare sighting in the wild a few cars back.

The prominent hatchback is a Chevrolet Citation (I'm still going through the "Standard catalogue" - having now started on the 1976/99 volume. )

But finding a '68 Cutlass and a fintail Benz in the same shot required that I post the pic here.

The Vauxhall Victor would not have lasted too well in that climate either, but actually the FB had a reputation here as a much stronger car than either it's predecessor or the FC 101 - there were still quite a few of those running round when there were virtually no FC's left.

The yellow car in mid pic is the rarely seen '69-'70 Plymouth Superbird. Oldest car by a lot is making a left in front of it. I think it's an early 50s Dodge but it could be something else.

Laramie is a college town (U of W) - wonder if it was a rich co-ed or a faculty member who owned it?

Car making a left (maybe across a double yellow) indeed is a Mopar, appears to be a 50 Dodge.
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,445
I was thinking that a group of muscle-car guys were cruising the main drag when that pic was taken. Next to the Superbird is a '66 4-4-2 and in the rear is what looks like a late-'60s GTO.

The odd one out in the Wiley photo is a Renault 8 - shame about the colour
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,445
Yes, a lot of Renaults used to be sold in the province of Quebec but I have noticed from these late '60s/early '70s pictures that they had a presence in Toronto as well. I remember seeing the occasional R8 here in Nova Scotia as a kid. Even then they seemed rather old compared to the 10.

I did a bit of digging using the Pilot Tavern as a point of reference. That was at 800 Yonge St until they relocated a block over in 1972, not long after this pic was taken. Take a look at this spot now, at roughly that same position today.

Taranna must have had a good muscle car scene. Parked at right, above the Renault, looks like a white Rambler.

That’s a bunch of MB taxis! Several VWs and an old Volvo.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,632
By that time, W110 taxis were so popular that MB was catering directly to the demand:

Must be close, I notice traffic in the background is still keeping left.

I've seen a number of good pics from "Dagen H", maybe in upcoming posts.

    It's a 1974 MGB-GT, not that there's much difference vs, a '71.
The stamped steel alloy look wheels are Rostyles, popular on many sporty cars of that era.

I don't see the old Volvo (unless you mean the one further back in traffic), but I see what look like a couple of mid-60s Plymouth Valiants among the taxi fleet. That can't be correct, or could it?

2017 Cadillac ATS Performance Premium 3.6

Correct. I think the slant 6 had economy enough to work in that application, and plenty of power relative to many offerings in that market. I have seen a number of them as private cars in period pics, too - Mopar must have set up a network in Sweden.

Zooming in, at far left parked next to a building, I think I see another one, beige. Old Volvo that catches my eye is behind the taxis, dark color, apparent split windshield indicating a PV444.

It must be a convert from the rubber-bumper ones, or a grey market, right? Didn't they have rubber bumpers by then?

Good question when I searched pix of '74 MG-Bs they came up both ways.

Sounds like it might have been a two-step process in '74, according to wiki. And who knew, there was a British version of "Dagmars":

"To meet impact regulations, 1974 US models had the chrome bumper over-riders replaced with oversized rubber ones, nicknamed "Sabrinas" after the British actress Sabrina. In the second half of 1974 the chrome bumpers were replaced altogether. A new, steel-reinforced black rubber bumper at the front incorporated the grille area as well, giving a major restyling to the B's nose, and a matching rear bumper completed the change."

The pictures about Stockholm, are from 1967 - that is when they changed over from our side of the road to your side...

In the colour shot with the taxi rank the car to the side of the green hut in the distance is a British Ford Corsair - a contrast with the generally German Fords elsewhere - all Taunuses of one type or another.

  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237
74 was when MG changed from chrome bumpers to the large slabs of plastic - both the Midget and the MGB were done at the same time.
Prior to that the chrome bumpers were changed from having metal overriders to the ones on that orange car - my May 1970 MGB had those bumpers with the rubber patch on the front of them too.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237
From what I can recall Sabrina was outstanding in two ways (left and right) but an actress ? -not really...

Another Ellis Wiley pic, Bay and Bloor St. intersection again. Blows up decently.

All of these buildings are gone of course, and have been for a while. Back in the '80s when I would visit, one of my stops was always Bay Bloor Radio at the redeveloped location, which was/is a high-end video/audio retailer who back then had stuff we never saw locally. At that point in my life I would just wander around inside the store in awe.

Big yellow convertible driving away at right looks like a 65-66 Mercury.

I see at least 3 convertibles in that pic - the Mercury, the Mustang, and the '63 Chevy. The Cadillac coming into frame on the left may well be a convertible too. Remarkable.
