Unearthed a few more interesting 1966 pictures from the Ruscha collection at the Getty Museum. Here one of the Hughes Market on Sunset Blvd..

In the midst of the traffic on the Girls up post picture there is a 57 Chevrolet wagon that is following a Saab. Behind that is another Pontiac

-- what is the sedan behind that Pontiac ? It looks like a Checker but isn't marked as a taxi
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,233
In the latest picture the 59 Cadillac would be difficult to park anywhere but America and to the left of the Mustang we have a Rambler American - every time I see those, and they are common in these pictures, they remind me in shape and proportion of a Volvo Amazon

    Valiant to the left

    1958 Corvette.

Is that a Nash rambler next to the mustang up front?

Karman Ghia to the right, next to the late 50s Caddy.

Between two Beetles kind of under the somewhat diamond-shaped "Hughes" sign, maybe a Peugeot 404, big Imperial a couple to the right of it.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,233
I saw that 404 but I had it for a Fiat - 1800/2300 range - another Farina design.
I think you are right with it being a Peugeot though

Those larger Fiats were sold in NA I think, but in very small numbers, a hen's tooth even then,

    Speaking of that:

    image

I think this is the French side of the Mount Blanc tunnel, maybe from its apparent opening in 1965 (should zoom ok).

Nice Fintail Benz on left, I think the yellow car is a Taunus 17M. I'm mystified by green car w Italian plates in middle. Light blue car next to it is a Renault 4CV. A Dauphine at bottom right.

Okay I've figured out what the green car is. It's a Fiat 1300/1500, introduced in 1961 as a step up from their 1100 and 1200 models.

The yellow car is a Simca - I think an early 1300 but the 1500 was very similar from this angle.
That green Italian registered car is a Fiat 1300 or 1500 - again they look the same but for the badges from this end
This gold coloured Renault is a Dauphine probably but there was an up market version in France called the Ondine and the only ones of those I've ever seen were gold coloured, so it might be one of those.
There is a Ford Anglia 105E by the bus, and at that time they were assembled under licence in Turin so it might be one of those in this area.
Right at the front there is a little white car beyond the kiosk - I think that is a Citroen Ami
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,469
In front of the yellow car, maybe a late model Valiant coupe?

I blew it up as much as I could and I don't think it is that. Don't know what it is though.

I think I spot a Citroen DS 2 cars ahead of the fintail.

I don't know what it is, but it isn't a Valiant.

I see this in that mystery car:

Mopar also had a presence in Switzerland then.

Looks pretty much like a Valiant, I even imagine I can see that bump on the front corner.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,233
@andys120 when we looked at a Simca 1000 in Minnesota you posted a picture of a Simca made by the Spanish licence built subsidiary Barreiros and the Mopar organisation did also assemble cars in Spain from Argentinian plants including various versions of the Dodge Dart some with changed panels.

However I can't see they did one based on the Valiant at that time. However given Simca was part of Chrysler in France they may well have also sold Valiants in France
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,233
In the distance there is a black sedan behind the further bus. I thought at first it was a Morris Oxford but thought that unlikely - I can now see it's a Fiat Millecento

1970ish K10 Blazer. Nice looking. Seem to be worth quite a bit these days.

From the Ruscha pics at the Getty, a 1966 shot of the Carolina restaurant on Sunset Blvd. Maybe it should have been named "The Continental". Expands some.

Rambler out in the road. And a 63ish(?) comet parked in between a mustang and an impala.

Ooh boy a Porsche Speedster at right - then just a fun used car, not a likely replicar as one assumes when seeing one today.

Big white coupe pulling in at left is a then-new 66 Continental, and a shoebox Ford just above it to the right a little, maybe a 49-50.

Colorized? Pink was popular in the 50s but less so as the 60s came on. I suspect this pic. may have been colorized. I don't recall ever seeing a pink Falcon.

Ocean City - weird paint on that 58 Ford wagon. I see a 59 Ford wagon in the distance, to the left of a Chevy/GM pickup with a camper, and another 59 Ford wagon 2 to the right. Yep, another 60 Ford, this one a sedan, is at right next to a squarebird.

64 Galaxie with trunk open in the leftmost row, 64 Impala one row up from the 50 Fords, beside a 57 Ford, to the left near the pole - maybe the newest MY visible.

Black 1960 Ford sedan parked near sand on right, it can be seen over a red Shoebox Ford

Oldest car might be the red shoebox Ford towards right, not too far from sand. There's a black 1960 Ford sedan just past it. Newest cars I see are '64MY, a Buick convertible next to '58 Ford wagon and a red Pontiac facing a green '55 Chevy sedan.

59 Ford at right with a 56 Ford going away.

I think weirdly colorized yeah - never seen a pink Falcon either. Lots of filters and tints can be applied by image editing software, too.

White roadster with wide whites zooming away at left, maybe XK 140/150?

You have very sharp eyes Fin, the white roadster at extreme left looks like an XK-150 to m

    At Ocean City,
To the right there is a Rambler American wagon - copper coloured with white roof
Corvairs are doing well here too - grey 4 dapper to left of the battered Ford Wagon, a white one in front of it and a Corvair coupe beyond, just next to the white 59 Chevrolet

What is the red convertible front and centre?

I believe that is a 1962 Studebaker Lark convertible.

All the Lark convertibles that year were V8s.

    @andys120 - that one is a Studebaker Hawk - 1959?

One of the “New Six” models? The E3, a model was sold as the Bavaria?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
The E3 was sold in most markets as the BMW 2500/2800. The Bavaria was a luxed up version for the US market with a 3 liter motor.
