I know we don't normally deal with pick-ups much but this imported one is British registered and the model was being prepared for sale here in the late 1980s
It's a Shanghai - the Chinese sedan which was in the same sort of position as Volga was in the USSR.
This model SH 760C pick-up was developed to export to the west, and was developed at the same time as the Shanghai company was entering into a joint venture with VW which led to the VW Santana being the biggest selling car in China during the eighties and nineties,
This project - which I never heard about before this week - was to develop a pick-up and a related estate car - in Europe but really aimed at the rest of Asia and the middle east, southern Africa etc - which was undertaken by a company from Surrey I think - called Locomotors.
That white pickup was a development model and looking at the vehicles in the background it would seem the yellow trucks were being made there as well - they were putting bodies on Leyland truck chassis for the (then) nationalised railway company here and those trucks are crew buses for trackside work teams.
Interesting. Now that I see it, I recall reading about the passenger car variant some time ago. I notice the car in your image also has UK registration, which hints it was probably on the road for testing if anything.
This thing amuses me, look like a 60s Japanese car crossed with maybe a Volga, and the rear door shape makes me think highline MB Ponton. Oh yeah, this is from 1986, a different world, I suppose this is how you style a car when you have no life experience around cars, maybe just going off images from antiquated books:
Yes - that car was registered in UK and there were actually two others - one of which is this dark green pickup in the website and another with a consecutive number - so I think they got a few to develop it and then used the better finished green one for the proposed brochure. The one I posted a picture of was also photographed at MIRA- the test track for the British Motor Industry (it was administered by the SMMT I think which is the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders) and was presumably tested by motoring journalists etc there.
I see two 1960 Fords, a white sedan on right w trunk open and a (red?) hardtop haflway to top on leftm. I also see a couple of Falcons right most row near car w open trunk, another on bottom row.
I think that's the relatively new, large parking lot between Baker group girls dorms and the Williams Hall (Noyer) complex where I live in a coed dorm that was new as of fall 1962 with two dorms, one boys and one girls, sharing a central rec and sitting area with cafeteria that was closed at 10:30 pm. This was matched by the two dorms on the east side of the complex.
I looked to see if I was walking through the picture, but that looks like a move-in day picture, so likely I was elsewhere and not going to or from class.
Above the MB Ponton is a black 61/2 Comet and beyond that is a white 56 DeSoto Fireflite Bottom left is a white with dark roof 58? Mercury Above the Edsel is a row of three wagons and the one with the dark roof and side trim is a 57 Pontiac Also a third 60 Ford - a white sedan near the overhanging tree and its just beyond possibly the earliest car here which is I think a 50 Chevrolet
Excluding that Ponton there don't appear to be any imports - not even VWs - odd for a college
Ponton appears to be a 6 cyl car, something I'd expect a professor to drive.
Looks like a Corvair pickup (tailgate down) to the left of the 60 Starliner, something that became cool a long time after it was new I think.
At top center, just above and to the left of the 3 wagons, between what looks like a ~56 Buick and a 61 Chevy, dark colored car facing the camera, gives me a strong fintail vibe (or a 57 Chevy, there are some odd similarities in a few styling cues).

You can see also that it is a rampside Corvair pickup, a coveted thing these days.
Parked a half-dozen cars up from it, between the (red?) '60 Starliner (first time we have ID'ed colors in a B&W pic, but a good guess) and the '61 Plymouth is what I believe to be a '52-'54 Ford woody wagon.
Funny thing I just noticed about that Ball State pic - aside from the Ponton, and a single Beetle just poking into frame on the middle left just down from the Corvair pickup, I don't see any imports at all. I would have expected a bunch of Beetles, maybe a duo of Dauphines, a selection of sportscars from England or Italy, but nothing.

State school in semi-rural Indiana. Other than the lack of VWs, not surprising. (having been there)
I've had another look at the Indiana College scene and think I can see another Edsel although I am not sure. At the very top margin of the picture there is the rear of a Ford wagon - probably about a 64 - just above the trunk of an early sixties Cadillac.
Coming along to the right from that wagon there are two obscured cars and then a dark gap and to the right of that is a car facing away from us with long flat rear lights and it looks like an Edsel to me... It is literally at the top of the picture and in fact the top of its rear screen is cut off by the top margin

The Bristol 411 was fitted with a spare wheel compartment in the front wing ahead of the door hinges although I'm not ours if that was right through to this exact model
I think Bristol is one of those niche makes where a high percentage of the cars built are still on the road - most, of course, are here.
@ab348 That is a Cambridge -probably an A50 as I doubt many A40 Cambridges were ever sold over there. To the left there is a pink Ford and next to it is a black & white 55 DeSoto two door - could that be a Fireflite Adventurer? There is a maroon early 50's Nash Rambler wagon with it's hood behind the leftmost lamppost There is possibly a brown Austin A40 Devon too - it's nose is just behind the second lamppost - directly above the black VW
A bit to the right, straight right from the Devon, stuck between two larger/taller cars, is something really short and small. Just to the right of it reminds me of a 55-56 Packard. Small car could be a number of things, likely Euro, maybe a Goggo or if the pic appeared to be a few years newer, a Mini (the vehicles in the pic seem to predate Mini).

Although it looks like a Mini it isn't quite right and in any case they weren't on sale here until August 1959 but the windows are too big relative to the pillars and if that is the steering wheel then we are seeing it from the front. I think your suggestion of a Goggomobil is the most likely
Nice mix on the new picture from an undisclosed location One small car straight away - I think there is a Fiat Millecento or 1100 / 1200 - its on the black tarmac area of the parking lot directly below the road junction
60 Ford wagon - white - directly below left tree and a beige ? 60 Ford sedan on the white surface beyond the red pickup and a white one three cars to the left A 57 Studebaker to right of blue Jeep with white cover Two tone 56 Pontiac Chieftain sedan to right front.
Some of these pics remind me of the things that were popular in the '80s and '90s that were a bunch of dots that you had to stare at for a while in order to see an image of something. These pics are that way when it comes to '60 Fords. Sometimes I don't even see any and all of a sudden others pick them out.
I never used to pay attention to the 60 Ford, thanks Fin!! Actually the 60 Ford was not one of my favorites, but now years later I like it more than the 61 or 62. My first car was a 62 Galaxie 2dr sedan. Incredible how many 60 Fords are in all these pictures. It must have sold really well.
2021 VW Arteon SEL 4-motion, 2018 VW Passat SE w/tech, 2016 Audi Q5 Premium Plus w/tech
I think they rusted easily in harsh climates, and were heavy - so when they depreciated fully by 10 years old and were painfully out of style, they ended up in the junkyard for scrap value after suffering the slightest malady.

I found a website called China Car History and this is the link about this project, and a lot of others too

62 and 64 Ford full sized wagons look very similar from the rear, I think that one is a 64 as well.
I agree - it could be a 60 Chevrolet or an Edsel
I spot a Beetle and then 4 cars to its right a small sedan that reminds me of an Austin Cambridge but I can't be certain.
