I only knew that one because I knew a guy that had one, they were never very common in the USDM. My buddy's always smelled like brake fluid for some reason. Like most French cars it had great seats.

Yes it is indeed a SImca 1000 like the one in your picture - it struck me as an unusual car to see in what looks like small town in Minnesota

Actually your picture is a Spanish licence built example - Spanish sales of imported cars were subject to tariffs until Spain joined the EEC /EU in the eighties so Simcas were assembled in Spain with some local content and marketed by a firm which called itself Simca- Barreiros - that is the badge to the left.

They made millions of mk 1 Ford Cortinas and nearly all of them have disappeared except the sporty ones including that Lotus Cortina (incidentally on Dutch plates)

@fintail - Nicosia complete with British phone box in the distance - and right hand drive too.

The Ford Popular is actually even more ancient - its the immediate post war Anglia E04A which was phased out in 1948
Any ideas on the grey and white sedan?
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,233
    @lemko1968

The GAZ Pobeida is great - sedan meets monster truck

In the background the blue car pointing at the camera near the rear wall is Moskvitch - either a 403 or 407 and there is a Lada RIva in the top right corner

In Paris the DUKW bateau must be a surprise in traffic although until about ten years ago less flamboyant models using DUKW chassis were offering river cruises in London until one vehicle caught fire - fortunately on land in Southwark - so I think they have been pensioned off now

The black taxi with the red roof is a SImca Ariane - there is a similar blue taxi on the left too - these were the SImca Vedette / Verasailles body with the much smaller Aronde 1300cc engine as they were cheap to run and tax - popular with cabbies
There is a two tone Simca Vedette Chambord or a similar variant with the old Ford V8 engine

I see a Panhard behind the red over black taxi.

They are Ford Skyliners, I think the the first generation 57 Fairlane Skyliner
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Yes, IIRC, 57 was the first year for the Skyliner w its retractable h/t. 1959 was the last.

I didn’t care for the front end styling of the 57 Ford but the Skyliner was a neat car. IIRC the 57 Ford outsold the 57 Chevy.

Yes, Chevy lagged behind Ford in '57 but ironically it was the Chevy which became an icon
of the 50s and present day values reflect. that.

You do recall correctly. The 59 had the best rear end visually compared to te rest of the 59 line. The 57 was too flat/vertical compared to the graceful curve of the trunk. The 58 was better, close but no cigar. 59 pretty much got it right.

In the Saudi picture, the person in the group of 3 is leaning on a low smaller car. It has vents above the
    headlight.

I don't think those are vents. My guess is that the headlights can be raised and lowered from inside the car.

I looked up this car. I learn so much on this site about cars I didn't learn about in the Midwest.
I found the full front view off-putting. But then I saw the rear. Wow.
But a Detroit automaker competing in Europe?

The Hudson Italia is related to Hudson and to its US car design. It was on a Hudson Jet chassis and Hudson had
sent a 1954 Hudson to the Italian company for the 1957 Hudson prototype styling. This is the singular result that only was saved by chance.

    http://hudsonmotorcarcompany.com/thecars/hudsonhornetitalia.html

Clicking on small pictures at bottom of that linked page with both the Italia and the Hornet Italia prototype shows how the concept was applied to the larger car.

    And the resulting 1957 Hudson.

The Elite was the first Lotus available as a complete road-worthy car (ca. 1959-arlier ones were kits)

OK, the second picture is of Minis, which were iconic. The first picture is of '58 Chevies, which were less so.

The '58 Chevy assembly line pic makes me curious as to what the red lighting above is for. Since these appear to be finished/trimmed cars I cannot imaging they are baking the paint at that stage.

Would be shot of the Minis be from Longbridge (Austin) or Cowley (Morris)? I'm guessing the former.

This shot is from Hejhal Oldsmobile in the Chicago area, circa 1962. A surprising number of conquest trade-ins from other manufacturers here.
