That Sunliner illustration is one where they didn't make the people look smaller to make the car look bigger, if anything it seems like they made the people look big to mask the size of the car.
Ah, memories of my bought new 1980 non-turbo 1.5L diesel Rabbit. Same color combination. Connecticut to Mt. St. Helens to Seattle to the Great Salt Lake and back to Connecticut. 125 gallons of fuel. Final mileage after 8 years, 289,000 miles. What a car.

I was thinking similar.
My best friend from childhood had a 1979 diesel Rabbit (5-speed). Aside from his being yellow, this one here instantly reminded me of it.

I'll make it three. Mine was a slate gray 1981, base trim level (L). It did have A/C, and you could stay cool or you could accelerate - take your choice. The most honest car I ever owned. Took me everywhere, got 40+ mpg, couldn't pull the cork out of champagne bottle. I still miss it.

I bought a 1990 GTI new. It was black outside - I wanted a metallic blue one they had on the lot but the black one was a demo model with just a few miles on it that they gave me a better deal on. It was really a good car. Amazing amount of room in those because it has a 2-way folding rear seat. You could just flip the rear backrest forward for the usual expansion of the cargo area, but if you had a need for more space, the bottom cushion was hinged at the front and could be flipped up 90 degrees and allowed the backrest to drop all the way to the floor. When I moved to a new apartment that took a lot of my stuff quite easily. It rode and handled really well too, typical German car-feel.
I got a first gen VW GTI back in 1983 but ended up trading it after a couple of years. The final drive was set up for the cut and thrust of urban traffic but was way too low for highway trips (3800rpm @70mph!).
I now own a 2020 GTI (mk.VII) which I like but I find the brakes way too "touchy" @ the low speeds I need for entering my very tight garage. I don't car for the farty exhaust sounds and I'll probably sell it as my need for practical wheels ends once I move from a house to a "retirement community".
far left, the little red with black top buggy is either a Jeepster or Mini Moke. Hard to tell from that angle, but it looks too short for the Jeep but it's probably just optics.
Briefly considered this as our son's first vehicle, until we found out that insurance on 2-seaters of any type were more expensive than on a 4-door sedan.
Interesting France picture. Several Renault 4s, a couple of Citroen Ami 6s, a couple of what I believe are Panhards, and I think a couple of American Fords, a mid-60s Thunderbird and a Falcon wagon.
In France the approaching couple are just alongside a Volvo Amazon
Two cars up from it I think that is a Ford Anglia 105 Estate - it would probably be one assembled in Italy at that time, for the French market, due to tariffs on our cars as we were then (as sadly now again) not part of the European Community
I think it's a 3500 GT Spyder by Vignale. From what I can find the Sebring only came as a coupe.
That's right, it is a 1961 Maserati 3500GT Spyder bodied by Vignale. IMO one of the best looking cars ever made anywhere by anyone. I've been in love since I first saw it in the 1962 Road and Track yearbook, they called it a "Modenese masterpiece for the touring enthusiast .

I think Fiat 600, too. Bigger than a 500.
