    @andys120

    This is a Simca but I can't recall the exact model - I think it is a relative of the Aronde Plein air

    Edit - I don't think it's the Simca

    Is it a Salmson?

    It is a 1954 Salmsom 2300S and AFAIK no relation to Simca though it is most certainly French.

    Plus an Army surplus one in the window. Not sure if I see any Jeepsters, there are Station Wagons or Utility Wagons.

    On the IAMMMW theme from a few days ago, those Jeep Station Wagons make me think of Terry Thomas:

    Handling wasn’t their strong suit, but you have to admire their body integrity.

    What is wrong with the San Diego photo?

    Yup the car on the left has the "flat-top" roof, on the right is the "bubble top". IIRC both were available on most GM cars of the 60s.

    I could be wrong, I think the “flat-top” was for the four doors and the “bubble top” was for the two door models.

    The flat-top was used on the four-door hardtop. I don't know what they called the kind of extended bubble-top treatment used on the four-door sedans. I called it 'fugly'.

    Those were very nice cars. Audi really upped the interior quality to Lexus like before Lexus. Too bad Audi was almost killed off because of CBS’ unintended acceleration scandal, which was fabricated and not true.

    I was a big fan of those cars (especially the Avants) when I was young, as they looked so futuristic and European to me. Apparently they can have some quirks and are not the easiest to live with, but the design was groundbreaking for a 1982 debut, no doubt and influenced future aero trends from many brands.

    The C3 (a 1985 version, final year before composite lights) will also always be Ferris Bueller's dad's car:

    I've always used "bubbletop" only for 1961 Impalas, and 62 Bel Air hardtops - sedans don't have the name, a non-flat top just being a "6 window" to me. I have also seen bubbletop used for other 61 GM hardtop coupes with a similar roofline.

    Do you know the relevance of the "MMOM" plate on the Audi?

    It's for "Mr. Mom", the now somewhat forgotten but still quite funny 1983 Hughes film. He did this kind of thing now and then - the plate on Samantha's dad's Buick in Sixteen Candles is "V 58" for Vacation 58, the story Hughes wrote that inspired National Lampoon's Vacation. Also, the plate on Jake's 944 is Hughes's birthday. Hughes was definitely a car guy, and there was a lot of intentional car casting. IIRC the BMW E24 driven by Claire's dad in The Breakfast Club was Hughes's personal car.

    Toyota had a similar looking wagon. One of my uncle's co-workers had one. Pretty avant garde for the times.
