Movie: "Diner" - about whole thing was shot inside the "Fells Point Diner"
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
55 Buick, Mercury?, 56 DeSoto, 1954 Buick, 1954 Dodge, from left to right.

The car on the extreme right looks more like a '55 or '56 Chevy to me but it certainly could be a Buick. The H/T closest to the Diner looks more Chrysler than Dodge to me.

I think you're right about the others but the Buick looks earlier than'54, perhaps a '51 or '52?

Fintail is right about the TR-3, it's driven by (Six Degrees of)Kevin Bacon and the movie is Diner a big favorite of mine since I came of age in that era, more or less.

It's a big favorite of mine, as well... Wasn't that set in the late '50s? I would have been very, very small... ;)

is a DeSoto, but I can't tell if it's a '53 or a '54. It almost doesn't look like the DeSoto/Chrysler hardtop roofline, though. I think it's just the lighting/picture quality, but it makes it look like it has a reverse-slant C-pillar, like what a '53-54 Bel Air would have.

Early postwar Bristol, developed from liberated/stolen BMW ideas and technology. More or less a BMW 327 clone.

Funny thing, as BMW was of course located in the American zone, but the Brits still made off with this stuff. And what a fine job they did with it...the company is now one of the weirdest of the weirdo small British makers.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Fin's right I believe the model name was Bristol 401. I'm not sure it was a 327 or 328 clone but they are certainly closely related.

The note on the Brit's passing it up is ironic. Wolfsburg was also in the British Zone of Occupation but the Brits passed up the chance to confiscate or seize the Volkswagen factory.

How different would the postwar British auto industry have been if they had taken over BMW and VW? :surprise:

Probably a LADA/FIAT/GAZ or Indian/Chinese buyout of old assembly line parts for one of those cars. ;)
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,136
Yep, I remember being amazed at having enough headroom in the back seat of a friend's BMW 2002. No chance of that with a 335i.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,528
    Sure looks like the Lada
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Yep, you and Juice have hit it, it's a Lada 2107. I see a lot of Fiat 130 Berlina in that one.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who misses low beltlines and tall glass. ;)

I want to say it is an early E28 530i, but I think it might be the model before that.. If it is the 530i, then it's a '77?

    Gorgeous...

    BMW Bavaria?

Not exactly, it's a Euro version of the E3, sold there as the BMW 3.0Si.

The 1971 "Bavaria" version was essentially a carberuated 2500 fitted with the larger displacement 2800 engine but lacking some of the luxury equipment of the 2800. It was introduced at the suggestion of Importer Max Hoffman, who also had a hand in creating the Porsche Speedster and the BMW 507.

The car shown is a later (mid-late 70s) FI version.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,528
I think it was called a "Duett"
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,700
Exactly right. Not Dodge that I said. It has 9 teeth in the grill. I finally found a picture of a 54 DeSoto with 9 teeth.

The car at the far left sitting sideways and all you see is the rear taillights profile looks like a 55 Buick rear tail.
    Then a black 1953 Mercury, 1956 DeSoto, 1954 Buick, 1954 DeSoto.

Well you're all right, sort of....

Wikipedia sez in their article on the PV444:

It should be mentioned that this car was also made as an estate or wagon version, that was known initially as a P445 and later as a P210. Regardless of designation, the wagons were commonly referred to as "Duetts".

In Shifty's defense I'm sure I've seen "Kombi" (or Combi)
used to refer to early Volvo wagons. Euros seem to have an entire vocabulary devoted to wagons (which are more popular there than they ever were in the USA).

Estate, Brake (Break) and Universal are some other terms I've seen for station wagons.

When I was in HS, one of my car-pool mates would occasionally be lucky enough to take us to school in her sister's Bavaria.

Man, was that a nice car to a 17 year old!

I remember how much space there was inside, especially headroom, and how quiet and powerful the engine was.

Of course, if I were to drive one today, it would just be a 30+ year old sedan.

But, that picture sure is nice!

    Aston Martin DB7 Shooting Brake

I think this car showed up on these forums some time ago. ;)

As for the low beltline cars I miss them too. Especially the old Civics, Accords, and Preludes from the early 90s. Everything nowadays is so bulky and near claustrophobic.

    Sorry Boomer, that's no DB-7, it's a DB-5 (ca.1963).

Apparently the owner of A-M, David Brown went to the Radford coach company and asked for a special body that would enable him to carry his hunting gear around and the DB-5 Shooting Brake was the result. A small number of DB-5s and DB-6s were fitted with Raford or Tickford Shooting Brake bodywork.

Given the choice I'd pick one of these over the standard GT fastbacks in a heartbeat.

It would be if it weren't sold in Canada, so it's a 1970 Pontiac Parisenne.

    It's a Fiat 1500 GT!

It's based on the Fiat 1500 but as your link shows it was sold as the Ghia 1500 GT in several markets including
the UK. During the 1960s there were a lot of coachbuilt variants of garden variety Fiats sold by Vignale, Ghia, Morretti and others.

Not a Grand Prix. The 1970 Grand Prix was a rather attractive midsize car. That's a 1970 full-size Catalina or Bonneville.

Actually, I did fool ya. ;)

While I agree that Ghia made lenty of cars that were hideous
they also made a lot of nice designs, the Pantera
and Mangusta, the Dual-Ghias, the Karmann-Ghias and this little number>

oh dear, you think a Dual-Ghia is good looking? We need to talk :P

That looks like a Ghia 450 (American V8 in there) but I remember it with a much more handsome front end, like this---not that chromey mess that looks so American (1964 Oldsmobile?)....

    image

Maybe the reason we both like the Pantera is that Ford owned Ghia by then and appointed Tom Tjaarda to design it.
