Back at work again - this one really looks vaguely familiar, but thanks to the pub last night I can't quite recall... It's not something strange like an Apal from Belgium, is it ?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
No, and no, it looks like a Vallengunga but it's not and I don't know what an Apal is but that isn't it.

    Going...going....

I must admit the APAL was a bit of a long shot - it looks like something I've seen but I can't think what ! Alpine ? Matra ? I'm guessing French but it will probably turn out to be a Brazilian VW or something...

That doesn't help much! Ligier or Sovam ?

I'm not particularly crazy about the 1959 Cadillac, but I can see its appeal over a '59 Imperial or Lincoln. For one thing, the Caddy actually looks nimble and sporty compared to the Imperial or Lincoln. Lincolns back then were massive, boxy things, and the '59 Imperial was sort of a heavy-handed facelift of the '57 and again, it was a massive, bulky looking thing. Not nearly as boxy as the Lincoln, but still a hulking beast compared to the '59 Caddy. I guess the Caddy just looks more youthful.

I think that GM cars, while often ugly, were still sleeker and more modern looking than their Ford or Mopar counterparts in 1959. And I do think that dusty-rose/lavender/whatever you want to call it does suit that '59 Cadillac much better than red.

Ligier it is, a Ligier JS2 1971-77, I really don't know much about these, I'm guessing they used Renault power mounted amidship. F1 constructor Guy Ligier used the JS intials for his F1, Street and Sports racing cars in honor of his friend Jo Schlesser, killed in the 1968 French Grand Prix.

'59 was a terrible year for just about every Detroit make but given the choice I'd say the Caddy was a little better looking than the hideous Lincoln ( the fattest and perhaps ugliest American car ever made) and the bloated looking Imperial.

    That's not saying much>

OMG that is disgusting. And I thought Bangel's designs were bad.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
The '59 Cadillac has sort of a love/hate thing about it. I remember some critic literally tearing apart the 1959 Cadillac design in a 1983 article. Flash forward 20 years later, critics are praising it as an over-the-top icon of a glorious age. If nothing else, there are a lot of 1959 Cadillac survivors as a result of that over-the-top styling. You can't mistake it for anything else. Personally, I like the much cleaner 1960 model and the sleek 1961-64 models. The slightly curved A-pillars on the 1961-62 models alone is a beautiful piece of design.

Per the 1959 Imperial: I can't stand the heavy-handed front end treatment of the car. I'd take a '58 or '60 over the '59 any day. The '57 Imperial is gorgeous as long as it has the quad headlights. The dual headlight '57 Imperial looks downright weird.

The 1959 Lincoln is just a total mess, though somehow I really like the 1960 model. Remember the 1960 Lincoln limo we saw at the Ford show? Seeing that beautiful car in such horrid condition made me sad. If I had money to burn, I'd restore it as '60 Lincoln limos are so rare.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,056
I think the '59 Lincoln at least looks better than the '58, though. I prefer that look where the headlights are worked into the grille, whereas the 1958 Lincoln had the headlights in separate pods that I thought made the front-end look really clunky:

Funny how those ugliest of Lincolns (1958-60) were followed by the most beautiful (1961-65).
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
You could certainly talk about "styling" with a '59 Cadillac but the word "design" doesn't apply whatsoever. Nobody schooled or skilled in design would draw such a thing IMO.

Is that shot from "North by Northwest" by any chance?

Nah, that's an old picture I scanned in of my grandmother, from when Grandmom & Granddad took a trip out west. :P

You had a pretty Grandmom! Did your Grandpop look like Cary Grant? Is that their Lincoln?

I'm betting you were adopted... ;)

Not sure about the year, it's an early '80s Buick Riviera convertible. I guess about a 1982.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,056
Statistically speaking, I'd say it's about an '84-85. Simply because they made more Riv convertibles that year. I think they only made a few hundred in 1982 and 1983, but were up to maybe 2-3,000 by 1984-85. I thought that generation of Riv was a pretty car, in either faux hardtop or convertible form.

Standard Flying Eight Tourer and if it is eligible for this site presumably immediately post-war, so say 1946/8, as most of these were made before WW2 started in 1939..
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
It's a 1946. I'll have to remember to put these up after you've gone to the pub. ;)

Great name - don't suppose there's a v8 under the hood? And what happened to 'Standard'?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Sort of resembles the Kia Optima. The logo differs, though. I'll guess it's a clone sold in southeast Asia somewhere.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
It's not a Kia or clone thereof.

    Rats, thought I had it.

Looks Korean, so my next guess would be the Daewoo Leganza, or a clone of that.

If I'm wrong then I give up! :D

ope no V8, they were rare in austere postwar Britain. Standard is better known here as the maker of Truimph sports cars:

    from Motorbase.com

The Standard Motor Company was founded in 1903 by R.W. Maudslay. By 1906 Standard has begun to manufacture inexpensive six cylinder engined cars and developed a range of mid-sized cars that would sell well throughout the 1920's. By 1928 Standard had launched its first small car, the Nine, which helped the company through the troublesome 1930's.

In 1945 Standard, fresh from its wartime production work, acquired Triumph cars and formed Standard-Triumph. By the early 60's Standard was experiencing an unusual image problem thanks to miss-interruption of its own company name. During its heyday the name Standard stood for quality, by 1960 the word "standard" was associated with austerity and in car-language stood for "basic". And so by the mid-1960's the "Standard" name was replaced by the "Triumph" name on all of its saloon cars.

#11164 is a Toyota Premio, it's is sold thru Toypet dealers which accounts for the strange badge (I think). I am guessing it's a JDM version of the Avalon.

Naah, the Premio is a spiffier version of the Allion which slots in between the Corolla and Camry. It's more of a Japanese equivalent to the Avensis/Scion tC.

Yeah I can see the Alfa symbol on the steering wheel.

    Is it this car?

    Alfa Romeo Spider
