Yep, you're both right. I'd don't think that's Sheriff Andy behind the wheel though.

Well sure, it's an Audi, but it doesn't look like anything that I recognize. It must be an obscure model, maybe not even sold in the U.S.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
    Audi 100 coupe (I think called a Coupe S)
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Right, this model was never officially imported in to the US but it was quite popular nevertheless. I suspect it would have done well here.

Exactly, it's a 1971 model from the early years of Audi's exports to the US.

Name the TV Series and the characters in this scene, the car is uncharacteristic of the show, to say the least :P >

The white suit has me thinking "Miami Vice" starring Don Johnson. The image is very dark on my screen. The blue car is a 1980s-something Ford Escort and the yellow car behind it is a Checker automobile, almost exclusively used for taxicabs.

cars right. That is Crockett and Tubbs.

Yep, the car is an '86 escort and they are indeed Crockett & Tubbs of Miami Vice.

It made for a mighty fine 2wd rally car, too!

I think I rented that one in a turbo diesel couple years back...or similar....GREAT little car BTW! Made the diesels we get here feel like second-rate autos.

Of course the window sticker helped, the then 4X3 Webers on a longitudinal flat 12 - kinda cuts down the options ;)

it certainly resembles a land rover, but I am assuming it is some kind of funky varient?

I think it is a South African knock off of a Land Rover but I am not sure. It might be a Santana made Spanish Land Rover also again I am just not sure.

I still see one of these every few weeks, locally - but I won't spoil the fun on this one.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
It is not any kind of Land Rover.

Austin Gypsy - I would guess this one is about 1959/60, but they made them for several years. This was Austin's second attempt to break into the Land-Rover market. Their earlier effort was the Austin Champ, built almost exclusively for the British Army in the early/mid 50's, but the Gypsy was meant to appeal to a wider market.
It shared a lot of components with contemporary Austin/Morris cars and vans, and as a result it sold in small numbers to fleet operators who already had such vans, because of parts interchangeability, (I think Post Office Telephones had some, and the electricity authorities certainly did), but it really couldn't compete with the Land-Rover, as apart from anything else it had a steel body which rusted, and the suspension wasn't as versatile either. The biggest user was the British Civil Defence Authority, which bought a large number, but they were disbanded in the early 60's, and the various fleets of vehicles which were virtually unused were sold off steadily - it's one of those which I see every few weeks.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
You are correct of course, the car pictured is a 1962. One small point--Austin spelled Gipsy with an "i", I really don't know why.

The car on the right is a Mercedes-Benz 600. The car in the back is a Mercedes-Benz...600 or S-Class. The car on the left is a Tatra, I believe.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
Car on left is a Tatra T600, car on right is a MB W100 600, appears to be SWB. I am on a low-res monitor so the background car is difficult, but it looks like a MB W108
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Actually, they are right, according to the dictionary (I've just looked ) - it's my spelling that's wrong.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
You guys are right except the Mercedes 600 looks like the stretch (Pullman) to me, kinda hard to tell from that angle though.

The Tatra 600 was also known as the "Tatraplan".

Surely Chevette-based, but the logo is unfamiliar to me.

Let's see, that's not the Chevron that Chevrolet uses, it's not the Isuzu logo so not an I-mark either. Pontiac made a T1000 clone but there's no twin grilles.

    Gosh, I'm stumped.
  • techweenietechweenie Member Posts: 1
No doubt the chassis is Chevette, but it's right hand drive, and judging by the front end, that part wasn't styled by a major auto corporation.

I suspect it's an electric drive conversion on an old GM/Opel made Chevette-like European market car.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
    It's not an electric conversion.

Looks like a Vauxhall Chevette, for Great Britain, as seen by the right hand drive, at least for the front grill.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,135
You can even go to Chevettes.com and see pictures of over 3000 Chevettes, all brand incarnations. I guess people will spend time on every brand there is...

    Vauxhall Chevette HS.

Super-retro-cool RWD rally-car special homologated just prior to the quattro era.

It must have been very fun to watch these things go sideways thru corners at speed in the British forests! ;)
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
I used to drive a Vauxhall Chevette in the early 80's, for a year or two, but it was a basic 1250cc one. I think this, if it is an HS, would have the 2300cc 4-cyl engine - that was a good rally car, and a worthy competitor for the Ford Escorts and Chrysler Sunbeams that were active at that time - even now, at club level, cars like this are still potent cars in rallying, because they are so simple, and there is less to break.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
    Vauxhall Chevette HS.

Yep it's a 1978 Vauxhall Chevette 2300 HS. Any of us who've driven the pitiful Yank version of the Chevette has a hard time believing that they could make an entertaining performance/rally version of it. ;)
