Diesels and diesel-hybrids are getting into the mainstream news more, so maybe demand will build. With all the problems finding good gasser techs, much less diesel ones, lack of cheap fuel, not to mention the engine problems the Liberty CRD had, I'm not sure that diesel will be ready for prime time anytime soon.
Here's a diesel hybrid we won't get in the initial launch:
It may not have had any power, and only sat 2 people, but at least it lacked 4 seats and was unsafe, and lost the drop top from its Tracker/Vitara donor vehicle, and did I mention it was slow?
Potentially the most pointless vehicle of all time, they took the few good things the Tracker offered out of it.
Maybe something got lost in the currency conversion? The IL article says "Volvo on Tuesday said its 2013 V60 plug-in diesel hybrid will be priced at $75,218 — about $27,000 more expensive than a conventional V60 wagon — when it goes on sale in Europe in early 2012."
A few other sites agree with that number but maybe they are copying IL.
The Volvo UK site says in a news release "The indicative price of the world's first plug-in hybrid with diesel engine is starting at between £45,000 and £50,000 in the UK, minus any government subsidy for electric cars (Plug-in Car Grant)."
The same site shows a £23,960 starting price for the current V60.
So, big price difference.
But, the low emissions exempt you from the London congestion charge. :-)
Wow - I bet that's right. Diesel premium about $3,000, hybrid premium say $6,000 (it's a big, HEAVY vehicle, compared to, say, a Prius), plus the 'plug-in' premium (much larger battery pack, see Volt) of $15,000 and you're just about there.
NO WAY to pay that off! Had it just been a diesel hybrid it might have a chance with UK/European fuel prices.
Even here that happened, and the mechanicals were not much to embrace either. Can't remember the last time I saw a Dasher. High marks for oddness anyway.
Yep, debuts at the Detroit show soon. The Encore is a reiteration and repeat of the Encore name, once used by Chrysler and Renault, maybe others, now reused by GM.
I'll say, it's twice the size of most of the others. Funny thing is a guy on IMCDB thought it might be a Supra.
Are you talking about the dark gray van in the upper right? It could be a lot of things, including a GM "dustbuster" (Venture/Silhouette/Trans Sport etc) or a Nissan Axxess).
That works for me. Isn't that another Renault in front of it, a red Renault 5, the car we knew as the LeCar. I think the silver car to its left is another, a Renault Laguna.
Van at bottom right is a Renault Espace (remarkable beast and way better than American vans of the same period) Next to it is a Renault 5 and then a Citroen bx, I think. ON left of image is another Renault wagon, but cannot remember model Next line up is a Renault 5, probably a Renault 25 then a Peugeot 205 Above that, I think the red car is a Renault

Both of the ones they sold are still running. Impressive!

Euro V70, right?
Yup.

I can offer up the Brazilian names for those cars, but have at it.

yeah, must be $2,700.
I dunno, diesel/electric seems superfluous to me. Is that what this is?

I took my driving test on a 412 (my grand mothers) with an AT. that was, by far, the most evil car I ever spent time driving.
I never figured out how they could take a car with the engine in the back and make it steer that hard.

Don't they call it V70? Or is it V60 for Europe?
The wagon was just a Variant. The shorter wheelbase ones were called the Brasilia.
Beetle was known as Fusca. Super Beetle was the Fuscao, with a tilde over the a, "~".
I only checked the UK site and they show the V50, V60 and V70.
If the diesel hybrid is comparable to the V70, then you're looking at £26,245 as the starting price for the non-hybrid.
They were the original Passats in Germany too. Later Passats were known as Quantums in the USA.

The aluminum body is supposed to make it 300+ lbs lighter. Finally curb weight is moving in the right direction.
Also the top takes 20 seconds to lower. Not quite Miata fast, but certainly quicker than before.
How long did it take before? 30 seconds? A real eternity. :P

On the far, far right, is that a Nissan Axxess van? Hard to tell.

I am struck by the number of red cars.

Renault Laguna wasn't born until 1993. Renault 25 was an odd large 80s style 5 door like the car in that pic.

I would be interested to see the new engine in action. They had a Z4 on the floor with the 2.0t, and MPG ratings on that were 24/34.
maybe they will have it in the X3 by next year when my wife wants to buy one!
