well, we know it is a Mitsubishi.

Something out of the late 703/early 80s.

    Maybe a Starion?

Great movie and perhaps the coolest potrayal of this particular car in any movie.

OK, think that's a 1966 Plymouth Fury in the movie A Better Tomorrow III: Love and Death in Saigon.
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
I am guessing the Plymouth Barricuda from the movie "The Wraith".

  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
It's a 1966 Plymouth Fury, but the movie is different. Hint: Gregory Hines and Willem Dafoe. It does take place in Saigon.

Oh yeah, 'Off Limits'. I didn't recognize the car (what is happening to me?).

I'll take the non-foreign one on the right in the first row - between the VW Karman Ghia and the MG TD on the ramps is a '50-'52 Nash Rambler convertible!
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,539
I'll pick off the very early and uncommon lowlight Karmann-Ghia at far right, and the pair of Austin A40/Devon at rear. Oh, and the Borgward to the left of the red MG-TD...I don't know what the red thing is to the right of it,kind of looks Borgward but I don't think it is.

It's not, Wgrafer already correctly ID'd that as a '50-'52 Nash Rambler. Good eye on the pair of A40s. I don't think I've ever seen one.

Who's going to tell us what's between the Borgward (Isabella?) and the
    Ivory XK-120 FHC?

    Looks like a Morris Minor

It doesn't look to me that it has enough of a rump to be a Morris Minor, but I can't identify it.

I was thinking that or an early Hillman Minx, but those had a one piece windshield.

Yup, it's almost certainly an early (split window) Morris Minor 1100.

Two things strike me about this photograph-

-Notice how many cars in the photo are a decade or almost a decade older than the newest.

-Notice how many different makes/years of cabs are about.

I notice that almost everyone is wearing a hat.

I'll pick off a couple oldies going away from the camera. Car in the nearest lane end of the line looks like a 40-41 Dodge 2 door sedan, with a maybe 1950 Pontiac fastback in front of it. I'll also pick off the DeSoto Suburban close to the camera, I don't know the year.

hahaha...New Yorkers still walk in the gutter to get away from the tourists. :P
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I think that DeSoto cab might be a 53 and a 56 Plymouth cab behind it. A couple of 57 Ford's and Chevy's. Maybe a 56 Pontiac and I can't make out the tail lamps but maybe a 57 or 58 Dodge or DeSoto cab. Those GM buses could be real stink bombs!

Chicago had those street gutter walkers in a hurry too - especially going toward the train stations during afternoon rush hour.
  • odie6lodie6l Member Posts: 1,173
what first drew my eye was the lady carrying some type of Orb walking in the middle of the crowd right behind the Clark Kent looking guy carrying the brown parcel.

    Who sees the clue?

Lots of folks carrying packages and gift wrapping. The picture was taken in Herald Square, near Macy's and Gimbels.

Who can tell us what year?

Yup '57 is correct, there are several '57s in the photo. I count two Fords and a Chevy and a Plymouth. Of course there's lo way to tell wehat year the Checker cabs are. ;)

I see a Checker with an old nose...I've never seen one like that in person.
  • bhill2bhill2 Member Posts: 2,606
It hurts me to have to ask this, but is the cab directly in front of the bus a Checker? It's the right shape, but the front end looks wrong to me.

    Yes, the donation collection chimney.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,539
That's the original Marathon style Checker, I think the single light version was only made 1956-58, very rare now.
  • bhill2bhill2 Member Posts: 2,606
Well bleach my hair and call me a Q-tip, you're right. I had never seen a Checker with that grill before. Thanks, Fin.

There are three 57 Fords in the picture, two coming and one going.

Because of men wearing hats declined beginning in 1960, I'll put two chips on 1960 and one chip on 1961.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
JFK pretty much put the end to men wearing hats back in the day. Men saw Jack Kennedy going around sans hat and mimicked him.

    I'll start - bottom left is a Citroen 2CV...
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Well, the red car near the bottom right is clearly a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere and the purple car backing in the railing looks like a 1957-58 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. I think that's a blue Ponton Mercedes next to a white 300 SL. Looks like a Porsche 356 near what appears to be a Bentley or Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud backing into an Alfa-Romeo.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,539
    edited January 2012
The Ponton car looks like a Peugeot 403, and the Rolls is a BMW 502. There also a #9 DKW 1000, #1 MGA at top left, and the #4 Heinkel microcar at right. Fun illustration reminds me of something by Richard Scarry.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It's off the screen, so click the link, but I think the yellow car on the right is a Citroen DS.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,539
    edited January 2012
Oh, I didn't even click :shades: . Along with the DS, #24 Volvo 444/544, Triumph TR-3 alongside it, blue Opel Rekord, car with trunk open at bottom kind of looks like an earlier Rekord. And now I see the characters at top, Tintin and Capt. Haddock.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yep, it's a Tin Tin drawing.

The artist goofed on the DS headlights but I'll cut him some slack since virtually every car is identifiable.
