I think the white microcar is actually a Velem Isetta - they looked different from the regular Isetta, from the back, and were of course French. The grey car with the trunk/boot open looks like a Simca Vedette, or Ariane possibly.
And I can't see what is wrong with the lights n the DS - the early ones looked pretty much like that.

The Santa is standing right behind / next to the pole (partially obscured). You would be able to tell clear as day if picture was in color.

The yellow car on the right does look like an early DS with 2 open headlights like this 1964:

It's a 1980 HMV (high mileage vehicle) Freeway, built by David Edmonson. Supposedly 700 were made, but I've never seen one. Guaranteed to go 100 miles at 40MPH on a gallon of gas, with the smaller Tecumseh engine. I'd say we've come a long way since then.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,120
Yep, that it. Any others want to ID the adjoining cars?

    G'day

Still an exquisite design, with extraordinary engineering, some sixty years after it was designed.

Bizarrely, their rear wheel track is so much narrower than the front, that they leave four independent tyre marks on payment, a fact which made them useful for tyre engineers. Likewise, the almost tricycle arrangement meant that they can be drive with one rear wheel removed.

However, when they go wrong, they really go wrong! Very much a car which had to be cared for a by a specialist

    Cheers

Early 50's DeSoto....back in the 50's my first car was a '53 DeSoto, and this looks similar, although mine had three round gauges. I would suspect this is maybe a '50 or '51?

I didn't put many miles on mine, as it was quite sluggish, despite having a "hemi" in it. It did ride smooth, but had lots of body roll when taking corners.

Foreground - BMW 700. Background - MB W112 300SE - that fintail fared well in period touring car racing.

Your recollection is good, it's a 1950 DeSoto Deluxe.

    G'day

I really fancied one of these when I moved to England in 1990. However, after driving one, I had to admit that it was too idiosyncratic, even for me.

    They were definitely different!

I'll just take the two Buicks in the background - the light green '57 parked and the dark green '55 coming our way.

I guess this was taken somewhere in California, but in a way it kind of looks like the street coming out of Old San Juan in Puerto Rico.

    1948-ish Buick, possibly a Roadmaster.

Two other cars of similar vintage parked on the bank with a mid- late 30s car furthest from the camera. The convertible looks like a Chevy.

I figured this would be a 1946-48 Buick. Buick had an all-new design in 1949 save the Special which I believe kept the prewar design another year.
This accident happened at a Hudson dealer in the Frankford section of Philadelphia back in 1952:

    Bad parking lot design.

For the older cars at right, I think the second to last is a Hudson and the end car looks like a ~40 Ford.

My father's drug store was on a small hill and I have fond memories of going to work with him on Sunday afternoons, getting to the front door, turning around and seeing him chase his '53 Buick down the parking lot, trying to get the door open and hop in before it crossed the highway.

On another occasion my dad almost called the cops to report that his car was stolen, when he finally noticed it sitting in a vacant lot across the highway from that same drug store.

I bet this Buick seemed to be securely in gear when it was parked too and just decided to go joy riding at 3 am.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,451
Was it a manual or their old fluid coupling automatic? My car is kind of like that, you have to very specifically select "Park" or it will just sit in-between gears and roll away if you let it.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454

Lotus Elite. First gen from the early 60s and still looks great.

edited to add: My driver's ed car was a Ford Elite but didn't seem to have much in common with the yellow one. :shades:

damned cool idea ... but it doesn't work.

I just now downloaded and tried it. It asks you to take a picture of the back of the vehicle and it has to fill the designated area. So the car definitely needs to be unobstructed and stationary.

So I tried using a Burago model of an XKE coupe on my office shelf. What did it return in its search? '06-'08 Honda Accord sedans!!! :confuse:

No idea what they all are, but whenever I see a picture like this, I think about how nasty it must have been to try and man handle those barges around in tight quarters like that.

man what a grim landscape. :(

Sweet Caddy convertible on the right...is it a '53? Cant' see the grill but the big V suggests a '53.

Heh, guess the carmakers need to incorporate QR or barcodes into the moldings. Wonder if the app is relying on the logos in the rear?
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
Left to right: Black '55 Cadillac, '54 Mercury, '54 Chrysler Windor pulling out, '55 Oldsmobile, the formentioned '53 (or is it a '52??) Cadillac convertible, a light color '55 Cadillac 2-dr hardtop, a '54 Buick 4-dr behind it, and a '51-'52 Packard visible through the fence.

    I'm bored.

So I've been playing with the app a bit more using pics i'm finding online. So far, it hasn't had any real issues like on that first test. It recognized an XC90, last gen Eclipse, new Chrysler 200, and last gen 3-series. Only small glitch is that it spit out A4 sedans in response to an A5 sportback, but that's understandable.
