Yes I think you're right about the TR---those were Stromberg "vacuum depression" type carbs---they were less touchy than SUs but harder to adjust and less fuel efficient. I remember I had to buy a special jet tool for them. But they gave the engine good power. Volvo also used them. One problem with them was leaking diaphragms that were hard to diagnose.

Some contemporary TR-4As did have SU carbs, my buddy's '67 had SUs which also seemed less fussy than the Strombergs on my '66.

First they rip off the F150, now JAG mimicks the Colorado/Canyon?

C'mon, that's not even a very competitive truck!

Officially, it's a JAG POS. I'm pretty certain about that. :D

Terrible Jag, William Lyons is spinning in his grave. Oh, wait :shades:

The Germans are even mocking it all now...and they've tried to sell the aptly named Brilliance BS series there

Actually it's the other way around. JAC built their Chevy look alike (JAC Ruiling) then added F-150 style bodywork to the same chassis to make their F150 rip-off

That's the 63 and a half new Ford Galaxie XL fastback which was introduced among othe reasons to improve NASCAR performance. Don't know anything about Lund though. In 63 Ford ended up with two Galaxie coupe rooflines.

Here's a bio on Tiny Lund from NASCAR. COM. Evidently, he died while racing.

"A big man with an ironic nickname, Tiny Lund won five NASCAR Cup Series races through a 21-year career.

Lund's career was distinguished by one act of heroism in February 1963, when he rescued fellow driver Marvin Panch from a burning car during a practice session at Daytona. The injured Panch asked Lund to take his place in the Wood Brothers' Ford. In the crowning achievement of his career, Lund won the Daytona 500.

He was a four-time NASCAR Grand American champion. Lund was fatally injured in an accident during the Talladega 500 in 1975. In 1994, Lund was inducted in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Ala."

Very cool tribute race car but something doesn't look right with that Galaxie. It's not just the wheels. Maybe because the whole car isn't in frame it just doesn't look quite as bulky or as large-and-in-charge.
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Yup, it sure is a '63 Ford Galaxie 500XL (tribute clone). IIRC most NASCAR racers in prior years were based on 3-post versions.

Are you thinking Cleveland or Cincinatti? Ted Lewis was from Ohio, but moved to NYC in his teens and died there. But he toured all over and spent a lot of time in Vegas.

Looks like California plates. Maybe the Hotel Carver in Pasadena?

Beats me, in other words. :)

Good question, I don't know, but something about it suggests a big midwestern city, Chicago? Detroit?, St. Looie?, KC?

Comments at your source site say it's Canal Street in New Orleans. 1955 LA license plates were black.

OK, here's a question. You can just see on the hood the number '410'. There was no Ford 410 c.i. engine. In fact, the 427 c.i. engine was available in the Ford in '63, and it came with up to 425 hp. What does the '410' refer to?

The blue Ford is a '56 (large center section in the tail lights.)

410 was a Mercury engine, I think. I want to say I have seen that in a Lincoln too, but I am not sure.

The hood says "410 hp", and it was a 427c.i. I beleive this is a 427 "Q" engine made in '63 and '64, and was indeed rated at 410 hp. Seriously underrated.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,546
Oh yeah that must be it. I remember looking at a very nice 66 Mercury I could have bought maybe 10 years ago and I swear it had a 410 in it - but I think that engine wasn't around in 63.
  • bhill2bhill2 Member Posts: 2,606
I believe that Mercury had a 410 c.i. engine. I know that the senior Edsels (Corsair and Citation) had that engine in '58, and they were based on the Mercury.

I also believe that jwilliams2 is right. My question had an element of misdirection in it (I have to have some fun). The 425 h.p. Ford 427 was available in '63, but it had dual quads. I believe that NASCAR rules prohibited multiple carbs, and the single quad 427 was indeed rated at 410 h.p.

We'll have to agree to disagree. The chrome side moulding appears too thin to be a 56, and it has horizontal chrome on the trunk of a 55 and not the big "V" shaped Fairlane emblem of the 56.
  • bhill2bhill2 Member Posts: 2,606
You know tmart, after looking at the trunk and side moulding, you're right. I would have sworn those were '56 tail lights but now think that was a trick of lighting, my lousy monitor, and my aging eyes. Well done.

Yep, the Aero Coupe is supposed to be launched at 2012 Geneva. Perhaps a bit long in the hood?

Actually I'm OK with the long hood which goes with the retro look of Morgans but what's the deal with the cross-eyed headlights?

    You found the sequel, maybe?

I don't like the C-pillar, looks like a Murano fell from the sky and landed on what may have been an attractive classic.

Maybe it's the new chinese-built JAG "Thang".

Inside joke for those who follow the thread closely.

Definite British vibe there - RHD among other things.

    LOL at the "Thang" :shades:

Sorry Fin, it is neither British nor RHD, if it looks RHD it's just the angles in the photo.

Hmm, OK, the only Brazilian reference I can think of is Gurgel, which built similar cars on top of VW chassis. Could it be an early Gurgel?
  • jwilliams2jwilliams2 Member Posts: 910
Looks like a DKW-Vemag Candango....not sure what year, but probably late 50's or early 60's....
