The seller has the one I posted at $24,975 and states that it's a rare truck - with a 4-speed, "COLUMN SHIFT TRANSMISSION." Looks good in the pics though and that comes with all the usual caveats.

In the upper left corner it looks like the front clip of a 1968 Mercury Cougar with the large side marker light.

I don't see it going that route. It's just change for the sake of change, CLS was getting old and some wanted it refreshed. When it starts looking like a woman who has had 10 facelifts (like more than one Toyolex product), we can talk :shades:

Right on the '68 Mercury Cougar top left. And a yellow '67 Camaro convert behind it.
Bottom left looks like a purple '65 or '66 Plymouth wagon with a white '68 Chevy Malibu behind it.
Next to them looks like a black '65 Pontiac Catalina with the yellow '68 or '69 Corvette in front of it.
    Come on - there's more!

Fair enough, you did say front and back.

    Still, that's half. :P

The tails on an R class actually extend past the D-pillar.

Point is, it's a trend for the whole industry. They stretch them to try to make the vehicles look longer, sleeker. Different takes, but same theme.

I thought the first-gen Solara was a nice looking car. But the second-gen is the first thing I think of whenever that cliche gets bandied about regarding an over-the-hill actress having a few too many facelifts.

Of course, on a van (which is what an R really is no matter how marketers lie), the D-pillar is at the back. On a Solara the light seems to be aiming for the door.

It's lazy design, nothing more. For the most part, automotive "stylists" are lemmings of the highest degree.

I have a question about 1986 Pontiac Grand Am LE. I don't have a photo to post, but if I did, I wouldn't need to post, since the photo would give me my answer :)

I'm trying to solve a puzzling debate about the LE version that year. It concerns the front passenger door's interior. I can remember specifically that the driver's door had a plastic map bin/storage area down toward the bottom by the driver's left hand. I can't remember if the front passenger door had one on its side down by the right hand or not. Does anyone recall if there was one on that side, too? I'm tending to think that there was not a storage space on that door, but I'm being challenged :)

    Thanks for any info.

Not just the Solara, that's my point.

    Profile pic of the CLS:

    http://www.thesupercars.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/2012-Carlsson-Carlsson-Me- rcedes-Benz-CLS-CK63-RS-rear-side-profile.jpg

The taillight is nearly the whole length of the trunk.

It's a widespread design trend. You don't have to like it, but look around, lots of cars look that way now.

Any how, back to the topic...

    fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,176
Because it is a short trunk - and I don't see anyone rushing to "imitate" the ridiculous stretched eyes of the Solara or the old ES etc. Yes, back to topic. Designers are lemmings or sycophants, take your pick.

'57 Dodge Coronet. I know they were supposedly crappy cars, but that's a good-looking 4-door sedan IMHO.

    Chevy Chevette or Pontiac T1000.

Those wheels look more Pontiac-ish to me.

    Could also be an Opel...

My best buddy had a Chevette, 84? I think.

RWD but not enough power to break traction, LOL. No power steering, either.

In Brazil, my brothers owned 3 Chevettes between them. They had the alcohol powered 1.6l engines, far quicker than the gas versions.

Those could *easily* break traction. ;)

That's a Pontiac T1000, 1986 or newer since it has the center high-mounted stop light.

The car on the extreme left looks like a Volvo Amazon (122S)to me; hard to say from that little sliver. The Healey is a 100/4; the 100/6 and the 3000 had an ovoid grille.

Parked white convertible is a '49-'51 FoMoCo (Ford, Lincoln or Mercury).

The wheels are definitely Oldsmobile and the tire a Coopers.
It's a mid size GM. For some reason I think it's a Buick without an engine.

Lemko, the folks across the street from us, when we moved in '70, had a light blue metallic '68 Special Deluxe 4-door, and it was a 3-speed! I can remember one day the dad parked in the street in front of their house and it coasted two houses' worth of street and hit a neighbor's porch corner.

Is that the one used in Buicks later? I think it is. I remember them as noisy and rough-running, sadly.

And the pic above with the rallye II wheels looks like a 1970 Camaro. In a nice period color.

That GMC V6, from the earlier description, is a 60 degree block, not the 90 degree Buick block that only recently went away. I'd never heard of the GMC V6, and was surprised that they made a V12 out of it at one point - should show up in a hot rod!

As far as I know, that's just called an Olds Rally wheel. My '82 Cutlass Supreme had those, color-keyed to the body in a beautiful light jadestone color.

Pontiac's were called Rally II's, I'm guessing, because they had an earlier wheel called a Rally I. Or, it was probably just called "Rally", but then the went back and called it Rally I after the II came out. Sort of like how people didn't call WWI that until WWII came out?

I think the Buick sport rim was called a Magnum, but not sure. And I think the Chevy was just a "Rally"...or at least, that's what we always called 'em.

For comparison, here's the Pontiac Rally I:

    image

Very close to the Chevy, but with six slot openings instead of five. I think the Pontiac Rally I was only offered in '66-67, but not positive on that. I think they started offering the Rally II on midsize/compacts in '68, and in the full-sized 5" bolt pattern for '69.
