Olds called their rally-style wheels, "Super Stock" wheels IIRC. They could be had with 'argent' or body-colored centers.

'70's Travelalls actually had '64-'65 Studebaker full wheelcovers as their full wheelcover. I've seen many, but here's a photo of one:

That's not just close, it's exact...except no "S" in the center.

    49-50 Ford coming.

I think that 60's Travelall Andys posted bears more than a little resemblance to latter vintage Studebakers. I wonder if Brook Stevens was involved in its facelift. I agree with Fintail that the previous 50's design was probably a little more distinctive. I believe in the 60's that Travelall switched to a Chrysler like torsion bar suspension. It's an interesting vehicle that kind of got lost I think after Jeep came out with the Wagoneer. I believe I-H put these Travelalls out into the 70's.

Besides the 49 Ford, a 52-54 Ford in the foreground and maybe behind the 55/56 Plymouth and 53/54 Chevy. Maybe an old MG behind that. Also around a 53 Chrysler coupe and an early 50's Studebaker 4 dr Sedan. Oh, maybe around a 49 Caddy in the front left and around a 50 Pontiac.

Yeah.. the sign on the right hand side for US 33 is the tip-off, as well... that's Parkersburg, WV and Logan, OH that are referenced...

US 33 is a SE to NW highway that runs all the way through Ohio.... from WV through Columbus and on to Fort Wayne, IN..

NSU Sport Prinz, early 60s. Looks like a Facel-Vega behind it and something period American (maybe Mopar) in front of it.

Yup, that is a 1960 NSU Prinz Sport in red and the blue car is a '60 Facel Vega Facellia (my favorite F-V)

I'm afraid you're a little off on the white car in front.

    (I guess it's sort of American) ;) >

Ha, for some reason I was thinking like a 64 Plymouth - looks so much smaller when you can see the whole car

Facels can be pretty cool, the Excellence was another nice take on American style.

that the new A class MB? whatever it is, I kind of like it.

I still wish BMW had brought over the 5 door 1 series though.

That's the newest M-variant, they call it the M135i and if you ask me it's a hundred times better looking that the stumpy, ill-proportioned 1M.

The 3 door sure looks better than the 5 door.

Especially from the front, let's just say people buy it for the personality.

1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Sunliner...a favorite year Ford of mine (andre and I are in the minority on this one!).

Good memories of an aunt and cousins who had one well into the late '60's.

I actually like it better than the '58 Thunderbird, which to me has too much sheetmetal behind the rear wheel openings and, along with 'Birds through '63, I think goes to great lengths to actually resemble a bird.

  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
When I was a kid I liked those 58 Ford's, so maybe you're just regressing - just kidding! The Ford was better looking than a lot of its competitors in 58 (although personally I like the 58 Plymouth better), but even though it was taller, I thought the 57 had cleaner looks. The 58 did have some Squarebird influence, but I think the car of that era that most reflected the Squarebird may have been the 59 Galaxie coupe.

'59 Chevy Impala. Visiting with my brother who had one and didn't like it much. He's 5 years older than me and remembers ENCO gas stations.

With the thin whitewalls, pic must be from around 62 or after.

    yep there's a Volvo 122, so that's at least early 60s.

Probably but IIRC whitewalls started getting noticeably thinner by '59 although perhaps not that thin. That particular car had been around long enough to have acquired a set of Baby Moon hubcaps and likely some other mods.

Recognize any of the cars/trucks in the background?

Going from what I recall in old brochures, the fairly wide whites were common through 60-61, then in 61-62 a kind of medium width took over, and by 64-65 a thinner style was popular. I know MB didn't move away from the old style until the 1965 model year.

I see the Volvo 122 Shifty mentioned, maybe a 60 Chevy behind it, on the right a 55 Chevy and maybe a 59 Ford nosing in at right, white sedan behind the GM pickup looks Mopar.

I always liked the 59 Chevy for some reason. I recall those moon caps being included for the customized version of model car kits back in the 60's, but like continental kits, I don't think those many cars actually had them.

    G'day

BMW 1602 Cabrio by Baur. I seem to recall that they took the base 1602 2-door and did the conversion which looks a little rough to my eyes.

Have a vague recollection of seeing one in Road and Track when they were thought to be very desirable in late 60's.

    Cheers

Baur made similar cabrios for later 3ers too. I had a couple Matchbox ones like this when I was a kid:

    BMW 1602 Cabrio by Baur

Yup, that's correct. There was also a half-Cabrio by Baur which had a fixed roll-bar section which looked rather unfortunate.

I think the silver full cab shown was a lot more attractive. Note the "Hoffmeister kink" in the silver car.

I don't think either was ever officially exported to the US. I've never seen one.

    That's a great color I think, though.

Is it me, or does that era BMW resemble the first-generation Corvair, or vice-versa? I can't think of another car that has a crease in that location, and a molding there, the whole way around the car.

It's not just you, the Neue Klasse BMWs of the early 60s are widely believed to have been heavily influence by the 1960 Corvair. The oddest thing is the startling resemblance of the 2000/2500/2800 CS coupes introduced in '66 to the second gen Corvairs introduced in the same year.

It's as if BMW, having borrowed the 'Vair's high beltline and rounded tail for their 1962 line, then gave Chevy the idea for the pointy nose and thin-pillared roof of their '66 redesign.

    I also see the resemblance.

Anyone else watch the Corvair on Top Gear USA?

That show has improved a lot.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
In Brazil, at least, that was called the Ford Corcel.

It was an upscale car at the time, at least in that market.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
    Ah - you got there before me - Wasn't this one the Corcel II ? I think about 1978 / 83 ?

Also I have thought of another car which has a ridge right round it like the early Corvair - the NSU Prinz 4 and its 1200TT TTS etc descendants.
