    Around 87 I bought a MB 500 SEC - of course, it was a Bburago 1:24 version.

    G'day

James Bond's car, an Aston Martin DB5 from mid 1960's. I have a mate who specializes in them and has spares for all the missing parts on this one, many of them hanging in his home garage. The panel cost is absolutely terrifying and tuning the engine even worse. It is a superleggera bodywork over a delicate tubular frame. The chassis is phenomenally strong and the panels themselves very light. Some panel sections run $50-100K if they can be located or have to be hand-formed as replacements.

My daughter reckons that being driven around in a pristine example was one of the finest experiences of her teenage life!

It is one of those cars which has a definite colour, like a red Ferrari or silver Mercedes: a DB5 should be a slightly rough silver grey.

The DB6, on a longer chassis is much less appealling.

    Cheers

    Graham

That didn't last long. That particular 1964 Aston-Martin DB5 just went for $435K USD at auction.

Personally I'd paint it BRG. ;)

    G'day

A DB4 Zagato needs British Racing Green. A DB5 has to be that slightly scruffy silver called something like Silver Birch. The classic image for each of them is slightly scuffed, with squashed insects streaked over them and clear signs of rapid use. A car demanding hard, fast passage over great distances.

    Cheers

    Nice!

Looks like a white Fiat 500 in the first row there, no idea on the year.

  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,483

Is the beach buggy a fiat jolly? Going with that over mini moke. Though after enlarging I think moke.

Also a British car in the middle row. Austin 1100? In red, what I think came here as an America.

I see a dark colored fintail, left, third row in, beside what might be a gold Simca, and on the other side, possibly a light colored Simca. Also a couple of Citroen ID/DS in the shot, and a Citroen Ami.

I'd have to go with a James Bond style color, too. All the better with a Swiss backdrop.

There's another car that has appreciated wildly, seems 15 or so years ago they were a lot cheaper.

I don't think it's either a Mini Moke or a Fiat Jolly, most likely you'd park a Citroen Mehari under that giant Tricolore>

Good eye on the little BMC 1100, which was sold as an Austin, an MG and probably a few others in that heyday of badge engineering.

Yup, it's a little Fiat 500 or 600 impossible to tell which or what year. I'm stumped by the white car facing the Renault 8 that's parked next to the (Citroen?) beach buggy. Anyone?

I think the yellow car to the left of the same white Renault is a 50s Opel Rekord.

The buggy thing is a Mini Moke - the sides are distinctive - as are the rear wheel arches.

I don't think the white car next to the Moke is a Renault. It is a four door version of the two door car directly in front of it - they are both Ford Taunus 12Ms.

Magnette - really appreciate the UK spin you give us on these forums. I can remember when I was very young seeing some of those Vauxhall's, English Ford's and some British makes on the road in the Chicago area. For whatever reasons, the TR-3 seemed very popular, particularly in the western suburbs back in the 60's. I liked them! I get a kick out of some of the old European pictures because sometimes they look a bit like maybe a 4/5ths scale US car back then.

Sorry I didn't come back to you sooner in response to this post - I like the contrast sitting here with you guys all seeing a whole different world over there - we see American cars here but they are not common - most of the older Americans seem to be from the fins and chrome era at car shows, with a smattering of Corvettes and Mustangs, but pick-up trucks are quite popular too - sadly our roads aren't always suitable for the really big ones and parking them in towns must be an issue.
I like the fact that between us, with Graham down in Australia and others around the world, we must pretty much cover most areas of the old car scene. Having said that, the identification of old cars is a bit hit and miss sometimes when I'm at work (lousy cheap monitor) whereas I can see properly when at home as here I have a Mac.
Given the way cars have started to grow in recent years I think all old ones look 4/5ths scale of modern ones - every generation of every car is about 20% bigger than its predecessor. My old Magnette was a normal full size saloon / sedan here in the fifties, but it looks small now beside a Ford Focus, even a new Mini...My Alfa Romeo Mito is much wider than the MG, for sure..

I'd enjoy seeing the photos of the American cars you see. They likely are more original than many I see her at car cruise-ins. I sometimes see photos from Cuba of well-preserved American cars in original form.

My big disappointment at car cruise-ins is the modified cars on display. I like seeing the original upholstery, wheels, etc..

I doubt there is a single old Yank Tank in Cuba that's in anything like "original form" unless you're referring just to the outward appearance. My understanding is that most have been extensively modified internally to keep them running in the absence of replacement parts.

@imidazol97 I agree about the customised cars - I don't mind the addition of a few accessories or seatbelts but I don't like cars which have been lowered, painted in totally non-original finishes, daubed with chrome or fitted with flared arches, wide wheels etc. I do understand that if the car was non-original then it's better than it getting scrapped, but it seems a shame to spoil real originality.

    • That's just my opinion, and I appreciate that lots of people prefer modernised cars - to me its like getting a piece of antique furniture and sawing the legs off or something.
    • I'll dig out some photos of American cars I have taken at various British shows - but not tonight, as it is past midnight.....

EDIT - how do I stop my posts looking like this - I am trying to reply to imidazol, not pretend he posted this ?

    There's a few ways:

Omit the > in your reply - that's "code" for quote everything that follows.

Or don't use "quote" to reply. You can simply compose a comment as I did here. If you want to be sure Imidazol97 sees your post, you can put an @ sign in front of his name.

If you do wish to quote someone, type a line feed or two at the end of the quote with your Enter key to end the quoted section and then start typing your comments.

Leave the ">" in front of the @imidazol97 and double line feed after it to break the paragraph that gets the blue background.

Another emphasis method is to just type the @imidazol97 but put 4 spaces in front of it. The next line does not have the 4 spaces so it's normally colored.

Those deluxe wheel covers are pretty cool. Ford had a similar style back then, I've always called them "turbine" style:

Nor anywhere in the US. Maybe 1:50 of them might pull a boat or a little utility trailer. The rest will go to mcmansion dwelling suburbanites for office park-pilates clinic commuting, or to livery service.

You can always tell a 444 from a 544 because it has a split windshield; or if you open the hood, the engine is a B16, not a B18, and has the oil filler cap dead center in the valve cover. It's the Swedish 1948 Ford!

Ah...I seem to remember the early PV 544's had two piece windshields but I guess I could be wrong. In my young days, I owned a couple of them. I also believe the early 544's had the B-16 engine. I don't think the B-18 came along until around 1962. Again, I could be wrong.

They are tough, rugged little cars that were so superior to a VW Beetle in so many ways and they weren't much more money when new.
