Now here's one that will stump you----yes, a production car!

Yes - my car is a Warburg - I think this model was a 311/3.

Yours is a PTV from Barcelona - made about 1958/63 and was powered by a 250cc motor.

How much to fix a smashed up 1/2 mil car? Looks like about $50K damage to me, minimum, more if you paint the whole car.

Nobody want to have a go at my grainy old picture?
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Grainy picture is a British car, a make that was established here for about sixty years and in its day made thousands of cars every year. This is a late example of the make....

1950s Hillman Minx or a badge-engineered Rootes Group relative?

I'm pretty good on British stuff but in this case I had to flip through my magnificent old "British Cars" hardbound encyclopedia (scored many years ago in a thrift store). So this car must be a Standard, circa mid-50s.

The book notes that when this venerable company started, way way back in the dim mists of automobile history at the turn of the 20th century, the term "Standard" had a different meaning in everyday English parlance--it meant an aspiration, a watermark to be striven for---like Cadillac's "Standard of the World". But by the 1950s, the word took on a more mundane meaning---"standard", as in ordinary, stripped down, "the usual and commonplace". This was a serious marketing problem.

Anybody seeing the gray coupe I posted a few comments up? Not showing on my iPad.

    And any guesses?

That's odd, I saw it fine when you posted it. I can paste the link and grab a screen shot okay. Reminds of a Piper Cub where the two occupants have to sit, er, behind each other. Narrow beast, or at least an odd camera angle.

Yes = it is a Stndard Ensign, the more basic version of the Vanguard mark III - this is the first Ensign from 1957-59, there was a later one when the Vanguard range got updated which shared that car's roof line (the rear window was larger).

    Its this Italian?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Those hubcaps are not Italian. They look French.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,539
yes, it is French. But there is an Italian connection.

Simca would be French but with an Italian link at least at that time. So a Simca Huit / 8 Sport. Body possibly Facel or similar - this is all guesswork

'55 Olds Super 88 stretch limo....

Yup. it is a Figoni & Falaschi Simca Sport 8 Coupe from 1949.

Italian being owned by FIAT and running their engines.

That's right...a '55 Olds stretch, from Sunset Limo, Stoughton, Wisconsin. Don't know how much they charge.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Seriously, I would have never thought of that car :o

Never know any coach builders - but as soon as you said French I realised the car in the distance was a Citroen so should have guessed French connection somehow.

This is a concept car, so it doesn't follow our rules---thus I will identify it. Thought you all might be curious.

I'm not sure what drugs Dick Teague was taking when he designed this 1954 Packard Daytona...you can't really see them, but the tail fins are this car are huge in real life. To be fair, it doesn't look all that different from late 50s Chrysler products.

And people complain about the maw on the new Scion. From a 50's catfish to Darth Vader and beyond.

Can't wait to see what kind of front ends we'll wind up with as EVs hit the market en masse.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Just can't satisfy you. Last year you were complaining that cars all looked alike. :D

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
Fins were cool - optimism, space/jet age, tomorrow will be wonderful, etc. Gaping maws are sycophant copycat designers being different for the sake of being different (hint, everything becomes the same) and workaday appliances trying to look aggressive to assuage the fears and ego of typical consumers.

Not a Humber - it's actually something more grand although a rather basic model from this illustrious marque...
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
Pretty sure I see a Daimler grille

Yes - although Daimler limos were mostly associated with Royalty, diplomats etc there was always a market for the wedding & funeral services, and the DK400 model filled that role in the mid 50's. Some of those were coach built by Hooper and a few others, but there was also a 'standard' limousine which was made by Carbodies of Coventry - this was that model.
It was a bit more basic although still a proper car, but like a large London taxi really - and there are very few survivors - I can't remember when I last saw one - they are not the sort of cars that show up at shows - and they only built about 90 so there can't be many left.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
Interesting. No doubt used up and thrown away.

I see it appears to have both a bustle back, and fins.

    Its this Italian?

Looks like an early- mid 50s French Ford Comete (note the similarity of wheel covers.)>

These were bodied by Facel (who later built the Facel Vegas)

    Nose lettering reads Vauxhall.
    Side lettering reads Cresta.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Yes - its a Vauxhall PC Cresta - this is the basic version, as the Deluxe ones had double headlights. In previous Cresta series the more basic version was named Velox, but they moved the Cresta name to cover them all when this model was launched in 1965 and then had to have a new brand above Cresta for the top of the range model which became the Vauxhall Viscount a year later.
