There's an American connection, I think. I cheated a little.

The headlights, parking lights, and the location of the bumper verticals shout 48 Ford.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Fintail - yes there is an American connection..

Graham - it is a European body shell used in South America but not Peugeot. The upper grille section is relevant - think of a European car with an upright central radiator grille and side grilles ....

Not BMW - try southern Europe
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,516
    Think Italian BMW
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
That's a very difficult concept to process---let's see Italian + BMW---all I can think of is Isetta.

BMW in what the brand wants to be (driving fun, somewhat iconic grille), no corporate connections.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Try a lost cause American make that relocated to South America, and an Italian manufacturer which stood making a car with that body shell (selling the pressings ) in about 1959...
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
    Oh, some kind of Frazer?
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Yes - now you are on the right track...
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Unfortunately, the track dead ends. I don't know diddley about Frazers. Oh, now wait....I do remember that Kaiser had some kind of deal with Argentina....I think even Willys was down there.

Yes - Kaiser Willys is involved.

    I got nothin'.

OK - my 1960 sedan was quite obscure. It is an IKA Bergantin.

This was an Argentinian assembled car, made by the former Kaiser plant which had built Kaiser Manhattans there after the US firm stopped production and they knew that model as the IKA Carabela (Industrias Kaiser Argentina). They also assembled Jeeps..

In 1960 they took the dies and presses from Alfa Romeo for their discontinued Alfa 1900 saloon and assembled a locally made version with a Willys 2480cc engine and stronger suspension and this car was called the IKA Bergantin. From 1961 it was also available with a Continental six cylinder engine but they only built a couple of hundred of those.

The Bergantin was a limited success - they built over 5000 by 1962, but by then were also assembling Renault and Rambler cars so this model ceased production.

That is a ca. 1951 Ford (S.A.F.) Vedette Decapotable . Looks just like a '49-'51 Merc because it was styled by Ford styling in the US but the little V8 was designed and built in Poissy, France.

Yes, Andy, this is a Ford Vedette ...

Your brochure extract shows how they elongated the car compared with the other more dumpy shape of the original = particularly the rear wing..

Very good. Yes it's for Gronk. I expected him to be more of an F250 King Ranch kind of guy.

    Shouldn't it be 87TE?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,516
Atrocious number alignment there. Looks like yet another W222 - good luck catching that, BMW.

All that chrome, especially up front, reminds me of my Dad's '53 Buick. :)

    1958 Corvette.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I like that car. I'm not exactly sure, but I'd place the Corvette somewhere around 1959.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
If it has hood louvers it's a 1958...but this one has the outside rearview mirror, which is from a '59.

Oh, I thought I remembered that the outside rearview mirror was an option on the '58 and factory equipment on the '59 ??? I do have better memory that sun visors were options in 1959! You had to pay for everything back then. Also the '59 didn't have louvers and I think I see louvers on that car--not sure.

Yup. that's a 1958 Chevrolet Corvette nearly identical to the one my college buddy drove me around the Finger Lakes region in. As stated you can tell the '58 by the (fake) louvered hood, or by the chrome trunk strips. I am advised that it is nearly impossible to tell a '59 from a '60 Vette. Apparently the stylists were busy getting the ducktail rear of the '61-'67 just right.

IIRC an outside left hand mirror was optional on nearly everything back then. Only a few had it available of the right side as an option.

Yep the louvers are the big tip-off.

    Corvette seat pleats.
    '59 - side to side.
    '60 - front to back.

When did they add the "grab handle" on the passenger side?

Note sure but the '58s had it.

Car of choice for retired British Army officers. Jaguars were for cads and bounders.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Yes - Alvis TD21 - the cabriolet was by ParkWard.

It was a cut above the Jaguar, and of course below the Bentley.

Bentley was for bank presidents or mobsters. Did I repeat myself? B)
