Well, it is a Mark III....

...and the picture is a bit elongated.

Looks Japanese ca. early 60s. Other than that, no clue. :(

Maybe one of those Indian makes---Hindustani?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,516
Yep likely an earlier Hindustan Ambassador.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Yes - it is a Hindustan Ambassador - this one is the Mk II despite what I typed - sorry - and as a Mk II it is from about 1962 - 77.

Later variants had an Isuzu engine - initially as an option - from about 1979.from but this one would still have had the1489cc Morris engine it inherited from the Morris Oxford Mk3 which was in production in Britain until late 1958.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
This one is a little smaller.

That looks vaguely familiar, is it related to the Fiat 500?

It isn't a Fiat based car - and it isn't Italian.

I'd like to say DKW, but I suck at European cars of that era.

Right country but not a DKW.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
OK - it's not a well known make now but it was a maker of motorbikes before WW2, made about 7000 cars in the period 1948-54 and made mechanical handling equipment etc for years thereafter.

    G'day

The funny bonnet line and external door hinges remind me of a German estate car I have seen, the rear looking like a Hillman Husky. No idea on make so I will guess Goliath because some of their designs were pretty strange

    Cheers

    Graham
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
It's not a Goliath, or one of its relatives, the Lloyd, although it does look similar.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,516
Motorcycle link - Zundapp? Correction, they made bikes a little after the war, too.

    The German "Standard" firm?
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
There is a connection with Standard - the chap who founded Standard had a son and he founded this firm.. The make we are looking for had this chap's name.

It is a bit obscure though.
  • grahampetersgrahampeters Member Posts: 1,786
    G'day

You are going for the really obscure here the hint about industrial machinery and Standard led me to Gutbrod. Hence a heavily researched guess of a Gutbrod Superior

    Cheers

    Yes, it's a Gutbrod Superior....

Here's one I saw in a museum in the Black Forest a couple of years back

They really did build about 7000 cars apparently....

And merry Christmas to you Graham, it must be Xmas with you now.

    G'day

Christmas almost over down under. For us that means a 160km (100mile) trip each way for lunch with my two sisters and children. Over the last few years, traffic has built horribly so I decreed today that in future years we will not do it on Christmas Day, and certainly not in 36 C (96 F) heat. Traffic on the Freeway on the way home was so dire, I reverted to back-roads, I have not used in 30 years - much twistier but fewer nutters driving. Also got to see few folk driving interesting stuff, one of which I cannot identify at all.

Sadly, bushfires this afternoon and friends are fearful, they have lost their holiday house. However the forecast for tonight is heavy rain and possible flash flooding!

I hope the UK and USA Christmas is more benign although I see tornadoes have done much damage in the USA

    Cheers

Up front is a mid 70s Pontiac (Bonneville or Catalina), to the right a green mid 60s Buick(?)
full-sizer. The white car is a '62 Pontiac Bonneville convertible. Behind the car w open trunk is a blue mid 50s Pontiac.

Those can be imported now, they fall in the dopey 25 year rule.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Yup, that's the luscious 1991 Honda Beat which now can be legally imported under the 25-yr rule.

Man the wheels on that Honda couldn't be spread out further if they wanted to. Almost no overhang at all.

Yes - it's like an original Mini - zero overhang...
We didn't get the Honda Beat here as a new car but there are a number of ex JDM ones as Grey imports - no 25 year rule, just limited numbers.
Lovely little car in my opinion.

    Nice pic.

Looks like a Citroën 2CV RagTop dead center, and I'll take the VW convertible (literally - I'll take it. ;) ).

    Another Bug behind the Citroën.

Yes a Berlina 4D Sedan. Dead ahead white car buried in snow is probably a Renault R4. White car far right betwixt two buildings is probably a Peugeot 404.

Chamonix? Or somwhere in that neighborhood.

I think there's a Mini beside the yellow Alfa.

    Is that Detroit-looker a '68ish Opel Rekord?

You mean the brown one? I think that is an Opel.

It looks like an Opel to me but not sure of the model Rekord? Kapitan? Diplomat?

The brown car is, I think an Opel Rekord C coupe - not a Commodore as they had a bit more bling.

The wheel covers and the C pillar indicate a 63.5 Falcon Sprint.

The wheel covers and the C pillar indicate a 63.5 Falcon Sprint.

I've always been confused by this "1/2" stuff.

I know everyone loves to talk about the '64 1/2' Mustang and I know there was a 2001.5 Passat and a 2015.5 Volvo.

What does the VIN say for these cars?

When a model is not available at the beginning of the model year it receives the .5 designation.
The VIN can indicate the time of year the car was manufactured..
