    Yes, I think the 924 is a later run S model, I think 1986-88.

Most most unloved Porsche of all is the 924, and the S close to it. Used to be the 912 and 914 and the 356 notchback.

I've never had such different reactions to similar cars - I've never much cared for the 924's looks, but thought the 944 looked great the moment I saw one.

Yes, the 3.0CSL was the first race car based on a production model to get the full areo treatment. It looked so cool they made a few for street use (those cost big $$$ )>

Extra credit if you can identify the aftermarket rims but if you don't who the guy is it's back to Remdial Rock School for you.

I'll take the EC - Crager SS wheels, alloy center, steel rims, many of the 'hot' cars dropping by the gas station had them in the early '70s.

I was told by the owner of a '59 'Vette that it is nearly impossible to tell a '59 from a '60. There's a slight variation in the taillights. The 1960 Chevy Corvette shown belonged to The Boss, real car lover. It is as Texases sez equipped with Cragar SS wheels.

I came very close to buying a 924S as they had the same performance as a 944 for several thousand less.

It wasn't always so. I ordered a 924S back in '87 but had to back out when the dealer couldn't get one after 4 months.

That was the best selling year for the 924S, with 8,940 produced worldwide. Then in 1988, it fell to half with 4,193 made. In the USA, they sold 6947 cars in 1987, but only 2190 in 1988. Something went very wrong.

I think it was the dollar to Deutschmark exchange rate that drive up the prices.

I'm not sure what cut so heavily into sales on that car, and so suddenly, but yeah, being too expensive for what you got might be the answer. I wonder how MSRP between the 924S and the 944 compared?

I do know that the 924S interior was nowhere near as nice as the 944, and is was noisier on the road. Maybe people just decided to move up to the 944 for the extra amenities?

Boy that one really brought everything to a screaming halt. Hints: it's not American and it is an export version, the country where it was built was RHD.

Is it by any chance a pre-444 Volvo?

Yes, @bhill2 got it. From Wiki:
"The Volvo PV60 is an automobile manufactured by Volvo between 1946 and 1950. It was the first car produced by the Swedish company after the end of the Second World War.

The development of the PV60 had started in 1939 and the car was introduced to the public alongside the smaller PV444 in September 1944. It was originally intended to be introduced in 1940 but it was stopped by the war.[1] The large car was powered by a 3,670 cc (3.7 L; 224.0 cu in) inline 6 that produced 90 hp (67 kW). It was attached to a three-speed transmission with the gear shift on the steering column. The vehicle had a wheelbase of 2,850 mm (112.2 in) and a length of 4,725 mm (186.0 in).[2]

While the sales brochure described it as "en linjeren vagn i europeisk stil" (a clean line coach in European style) the truth was that it looked very much like a 1939 Pontiac with the front being almost impossible to tell from the original. However the Volvo as 10 cm shorter than the smallest Pontiac.[1]

Production couldn’t start until December 1946, but the majority of the cars were built in 1949–1950. In total, there were 3506 PV60s produced, about 500 of which were built into trucks or vans.[3]

The smaller PV444 was more suited for the post-war economy and production of the PV60 halted in 1950. It would take almost two decades until Volvo introduced another upmarket six-cylinder car, the 164."

Bingo! It's a 1946 Volvo PV60L, a long wheelbase version of a prewar Volvo design that was used as a hotel shuttle. Needless to say they're pretty rare.

Volvo was good at cribbing designs, that one has a strong dose of prewar Mopar (the Volvo Carioca also was an Airflow facsimile). And now they are owned by the Chinese, the more things change...
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
I liked the Volvo - I had heard of the PV60 but the long-wheelbase confused me - not a car I've ever seen...

At first glance, I thought a 52 Ford, based on the grill and rear quarter panel, but on second glance it's not. Don't have a clue!

Yup, the Alfa Giulia TI 1600 Super was a very capable little sports sedan from the people who invented the modern sports sedan. They were favored by Italian police and thus are seen in many a 60s movie car chase, notably in The Italian Job (1969).

I saw one with the same "Flying Squad" markings at this week's RM Auction at the (Phoenix) Arizona Biltmore and decided that out of all the many fantastic cars I've seen at the different auctions, this was the one I'd most like to have.

Giulia Sedans were made from 1962 to 1978.

Well, looking at that very odd station wagon, I guess I see how the Brit's got the term for station wagons "shooting brake" - It's so goofy a driver can forget to brake and the end result after rear ending the wagon is...

Renault Avantime. I think I saw a couple this last trip to Europe, all in Geneva I think. They are getting rare now, it's a shame what TG did to theirs. I think the roof chop was an Espace, but they still ruined the Avantime. Future cult car, if the electronics hold up.
