'Woody' looks like a '62-ish Falcon Squire Wagon.

How do you know that's a '70 Squareback? My folks had a '67. Drove it cross country in the summer of '71.

I don't - I asked my wife what year(s) her father had their Fastback and Squareback and she remembers that the Squareback was when she was in junior high, so it was an semi-educated guess.

And she really didn't mind the Squareback, it was the Bug she really hated. She wasn't fond of the SuperBeetle I had when we met either. :)

Ah. I figured there were no cosmetic differences between the years, unlike American cars of the same vintage.

Heh, looks like a '57 Chevy Bel Air, one of my least favorite cars, next to a '70 VW Squareback, one of my wife's least favorite cars.

Are those Cali plates on the Chevy? Tahoe area?

The photo was taken at an undisclosed location in Minnesota, anybody wanna guess the year?

The yellow w/black vinyl top is maybe a 67 Chrysler, the car to its right a 67 GM of some kind given its roofline (and could that be a maroon Eldorado next to it?), with a 63 or 64 Cadillac on the other side of the Chrysler?

At first, I wouldn't have guessed MN with that big snow covered hill. But then I remembered there are more than a few ski resorts there. I'll guess around 1967.

Minnesota? Must be some crazy camera angle to get that shot with the vertical in it. Explains why there's mostly American iron in the pic - Tahoe would have had more imports in the shot.

No clue, seems like most of the topography there is along the Mississippi or Da Lake. Wiki says there's hills in the BWCA but we only paddled "the other side" in Quetico, and it was flat.

Now that I think of it, Duluth had big hills - we called it the San Fran of the Midwest (Coit Tower was some kind of tall ore loading gizmo in the harbor) . Don't know how people navigated the streets there in the winter.

in front of the VW you can see the fender of a '61 or '62 Chevy wagon. Another wagon is parked near the building,
    I think it's a '62-3 Fairlane.

I'll be darned. Based on the winged rear side window I think you are right; it's a '63 Fairline Squire. Good eye.

i thinkwe've worried the MN shot to death but there are no good clues to the fact that it was taken in 1969. i think the newest car must be the Squareback.

The Falcon Squire also had the rear vent window.  And the Fairlane wood trim is different.

The vent window looks more "trapezoidal" than the Falcon's to me, but I will leave further discussion to those with better monitors.

What do these two (blue car and red one) have in common?

I can't tell what the red one is, but I'm guessing the 6 cyl engine (since the green one is a TR 250)

Actually no, the red car does not have six cylinders. The other one is indeed a TR-250 which of course does have six.

BTW the Triumph appears as a medium shade of blue on my monitor, not green. :s

Ah HA! They both have "250" in the name. The other car is a Daimler SP250 Dart. Those odd fender flares gave it away. I found a pic by googling "ugly Daimler":

At's right Tex. Both cares featured 2.5 liter motors which are reflected in their "handles". The TR had a straight six while the Daimler featured a teensy V8. Curiously the Daimler's design was so complex that production was terminated shortly after Daimler was sold to Jaguar, who discovered that the SP250 cost more to build than their own XK-E. Apparently this did not apply to the V8 which found a home in the Mk.II saloon which was sold as the Daimler 2.5 or the Daimler 250/V8.

Wild guess, but ford galaxies 500? I'll say it us a 65. Or is that 66?

Anyway, I am not a big car fan, but IMO that style ford was the best looking large domestic of the 60's.

1966, Ford and Mopar were kind of squarish then compared to GM's coke bottle styling. I like the C pillar effect on this car.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,456
Yep, that's a 66, with that trim, a "7 Litre" (428) car. Fairly rare bird. The first car I drove regularly was a blue 66 Galaxie 2 door HT, but a regular 390 model.

Yup, you nailed it the 428 motor versions of the Galaxie 500XL were sold as the"Ford 7 Litre"

The euro spelling of liter was deliberate and at least one European had it as his personal car, F1 Champion Jim Clark who raced a 427-equipped Galaxie in the 1965 British Touring Car Championship.
I'd guess Clark's was one of a handful of cars that got the 427 in place of the 428.

Yeah, the 427s are super rare and pretty valuable, the "R Code" cars. I seem to see 1963 models online now and then, but the later ones, especially 65-67 seem to be unicorns.

For a furriner you sure know your Yank tanks. It's a '61 Olds Super 88 (doesn't say anything about "Dynamic").

That roof style is known as the "bubbletop" but you knew that. ;)

Dynamic 88 was the base trim level. Super 88 was the next step up (and below the 98).

Many years ago one of my father's co-workers had one of those. I never rode in it, but apparently it had an automatic clutch activated by moving the shifter. IIRC, he said it utilized iron particles and magnetism to create a 'wet clutch', but I was young so I may have it wrong.

Nope, it's the Tiger's predecessor, a 1963 Sunbeam Alpine S3. Earlier Alpines like this can be distinguished from Tigers and later Series Alpines by their large tailfins. IOW as time went on the fins got smaller.

Back in the day there were two or three Alpines sold for every Tiger IIRC.
