Yep, a '96 Ford Thunderbird LX to be exact. IIRC these were powered by 302 V8s.

They had the god awful 3.8 V6 and by the era of that example the 4.6 V8 from the Panthers.

Mom had a 96 in a nice green over beige. If it had been a V8 I would have bought it from her.

Huh. Didn't realize those tbirds came WITHOUT a spoiler. Don't recall ever seeing one like that.

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

My Mom's didn't have the spoiler either. It was pretty well optioned, moonroof, auto temp, keyless entry (when that was actually something optional)

I remember some people stashed away 97 models as future collectibles, the supposedly last T-Bird. That wasn't a good move.
  • MichaellMichaell Moderator Posts: 265,106
IIRC, the entire design team was fired after that iteration of T-Bird was released. Bloated, compared to the previous generation.

It really wasn't a bad driving car, independent rear suspension, RWD and quite comfortable. The V6 was just a total turd, noisy and thirsty. The V8 made the car so much better. At least by 96-97 Ford figured out the head gasket problems.

I love the 80s style Birds and Cougars but unless you got a T-bird SC they were all turds too. They got the 302 but only the lopo version (again from the Panthers). I don't know why Ford wouldn't have put the HO in, but they probably didn't want to cut into the Mustang sales.

They sold about 4 billion of those 89-97 Birds, I suspect the design team got promoted 5 management levels (out of 35), no matter the long term issues :)

    Fiat 500/600, perhaps an Abarth.
Hmmm...I'd guess someone like Marcello Mastrianni, Sophia Loren or Frederico Fellini.

80s era Honda City cabrio - kind of NA looking background, I will guess this is another private import now able to trickle in now that it is of a certain age.

The cool City was the hatch model that came with a little motocompo minibike.

It's not that bad, just a dorky little hatch with a cool little bike.

When I was 4 or 5 years old, my aunt won one of those funky little EVs in a shopping mall contest. I remember going to see it and I was able to go for a ride in it - as I was a little kid, I thought it was very cool. It was one of these:

...and they probably hate west coast socialists :'( But yeah, that was a pretty funny movie and Dan Akroyd always had the Chicago accent down pat. The only place I heard it better was the airport van driver in "Home Alone".
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,579
I'll always associate a red Pinto wagon (not that they are seen on the road at all anymore) with that movie, as well as associating pre-downsized 70s Grand Prixs with Carrie Fisher.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I had a college buddy back in the 70's who lived in a Chicago apartment just like that adjacent to the L tracks - and they were that noisy and bright. Liked the rednecks at the bar as well because people think redneck is strictly a southern phenomenon B)

Well, yeah, but the red necks in Chicago are from frostbite, not chopping cotton. :p
