Sorry - I've been away from the site for a while - just catching up with everything else really.

Saw the Mg Magnette Varitone posted a few pages back and I can't recall ever seeing a wire wheeled one until they started getting converted in the 80s.

On this photo with the AC Cobra /Shelby dealer, I am not familiar with US trucks but in the parking lot there is a truck with a canvas tilt and from the proportions it looks like a Land Rover, but I am sure they were relatively rare over there so I'm probably wrong...
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Wow Mag , you have very sharp eyes. The truck w the canvas top can be seen a few rows behind the old Plymouth and it does look look like a 1950s or 60s Land Rover. I have a diecast scale of a Mk.1 LR and it looks just like that.

Land Rovers were fairly rare here back then but if you were going to see one anywhere it'd be in SoCal.

To be fair the Land Rover is well known here so it was easier to spot - what gets me is that there are so few trucks in that shot - nowadays a fair proportion of the 'cars' would be pick-ups in some shots....

Well, the parking lights have been moved to below the headlights making it either a 1947.5 or a 1948 Ford Sportsman convertible.

The odds are that it is not a 1948 because only 28 were made.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Not much gets by you Wrench, the ad describes it as a1947 Ford Super Deluxe convertible. Apparently the wood siding was an aftermarket add-on.

Yes the wood is not a factory item.

The "Sportsman" did have the wood.

Yes, there were factory woody Ford convertibles. As that one is wearing a Sportsman badge, I have no reason to believe it isn't legit.

For Yankee Stadium I think I see a 54 Cadillac sedan.

Front row center, Hillman Minx - I like those.

Looks like Ford was big in that area,

    That Beetle's a '53-'57, with that window, I think.

A Tucker Torpedo. Know why? The large area in front of the passenger, who was supposed to (quickly) go down there in the event of a crash. I forget what he called it...

Edit: Wiki says the "crash chamber"...

I meant HIS wood isn't a factory item.

re: Tucker: I think it was called the "safety zone". It's funny that they thought a pop-out windshield was a safety feature--I guess that gave you a clear shot for being ejected over the hood? Lots of luck having the presence of mind to see an accident coming and then crouch down under the dash in time.

Masten Gregory, an American racer of the 50s and 60s (co-winner @ LeMans in '65) used to jump out of his race cars if he felt a crash coming. Did it at least a half dozen times w/o serious injury and died in his sleep many years later.

Thanks Texases - I thought I hadn't done it right somehow. And it turns out the actual picture was taken in Cheshire, not Liverpool, not that it makes much difference.

Directly in front of that Beetle there is another one - it seems like its the air-cooled cars on the Shelby Cobra photo they do choose to park together.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Fin, there's two Minxes - the other one is two tone in the furthest row of the car park near the entrance.

Any guesses on the big car between the two white posts facing away from us - older looking styling.

Well that makes sense since racing in the 50s and 60s was utterly lethal---probably one of the few instances when being out of one of those death traps was better than crashing while in one.

    Hi Andy

Yes, its an Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire - this is one from about 1955/6, but thy made a mildly modified one until early 1960.

Youngest car (certainly the most modern) in that shot is probably a Mini - visible above the Minx in the front row it is to the left of an old car which Is a Morris Ten from the late 40s. There is also a Ford Anglia 105 visible above the roof of the Armstrong Sid - you can just make out the roof and back window on the Anglia which is distinctive.

Of course if it is about 1961 then the Ford Zodiac and Consul on each side of the Minx could be brand new cars, and indeed the Morris 1000 Traveller in the spot next to the further entrance could also be new - they made those into the 70s.

I'll try and find a better car park picture to post next time, with a clearer and larger view than this one.

I see a Morris Traveler "woodie" in the second row from the building at the beginning of the row on the right, facing away.

Shifty, the triangular logo on the wheel cover is an Alvis emblem, so I think it's a ca.1948 TA-14, probably bodied by Park Ward.

Yep, you got it. Interesting how "pre-war" many post-war British cars looked, well up into the mid 1950s. I think America got the jump on more modern designs, circa 1949, but the Brits hung on until 1955 or so.

I'll rattle off a few I know. Forward of the two Minis is a Hillman Husky, Forward of that is a
Ford of some sort and in front of it ,I think, a Standard Ten. On the extreme left facing the fence is a mid '60s Ford Cortina (perhaps one of the newer cars)

I'll pick off a few. At right facing the fence I see a Volvo Amazon/122, and beside the Mini near the fence I believe I see a BMC 1100/1300. Kind of towards the middle in the background I spot a 105E Anglia and a Bedford van. Stuck in that pile I think I see a Vauxhall FA Victor, and in the row to the left, an FB Victor estate.

In the foreground is a Bentley Mk VI, behind that perhaps a Ford Poplar , the Ford in front of the Minis is an Anglia 100E, and the car behind the Ford appears to be an early Hillman Minx.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Yes, this one is quite mixed bunch.

The car behind the Ford Popular is a Morris Oxford traveller - a Mk III I believe.

And there is a Reliant three wheeler - just above the ZA Magnette is a dark Morris Minor, and the car beyond that is the Reliant
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
The little car behind the Bentley might be a Fiat 500 Topolino. The "woodie" estate behind it could be a Morris Minor Traveler.

That's a 64. Nice to see dealer nameplates were a thing then too.

There's another 64 Ford parked at right.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
The Falcon wagon parked ahead of the big '64 Ford is likely a '64 as well. I see a couple of others from the '64 MY on the opposite side as well

Way toward the front of the line is a 60 Ford in a popular at the time shade of green for them. Can't make out the rear window to tell if it is the flatter Galaxie or the rather bulbous Fairlane.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
If I had to guess I'd say that's a 1960 Ford Fairlane. Directly behind that is a '57 Chevrolet and behind that is a post 1959 Volkswagen 1200 (AKA Beetle/Bug). The car directly in front of the black convertible is a first gen (60-64) Chevy Corvair.

There's a clue that tells what town this is likely to be, it's on the back of the convertible.

Kresge's the precursor to K-Mart. I remember as a kid that was the go to place for pet supplies and pet birds, fish or turtles. Also had a big candy bar selection including odd ones (in the Chicago area at least) like Powerhouse which were 3 for 12 cents instead of a nickel each, as well as some dime vending games. Some of us were particularly attracted to a driving one where you sat behind the wheel and reacted to situations on the screen. But we played for who could get the worse score by hitting other cars and pedestrians - it was a junior high thing B)
