Here's a pic from an ebay auction of a 1962 Hertz brochure - not exactly Shelby Mustangs, but not bad cars:

Due to overwhelming response, I am forced to reveal that that white VW Super Beetle convertible was a 1976 "Bicentennial Edition". Every VW dealer got one of them to sell, and they came equipped with things like special trim, console, rosewood dash, flare horns, white on white, and other silly things. They are worth a fair amount today.

I had no idea they made a Bicentennial Edition. It kind of pales in comparison to this:

    http://www.caranddriver.com/photo-gallery/spirit-of-76-bicentennial-edition-cadillac-eldorado-gallery#1

Certainly pales in size and weight, but the VW is probably worth more.

They even made a Bicentennial Westphalia.
And no doubt the VW is way more fun (and easier) to drive. Plus you don't have to measure fuel economy in gallons per mile.

Or like my son's rental from Hertz a few months back, they put him in a Yaris with NO cruise control--in Huston. Didn't even tell him in advance it had NO cruise control.

Probably a chance that Hertz gets a fleet special with options maybe different from retail cars, or it was an older car.

If I had to do highway driving, I would be peeved without it. It's 2017. Rental car rule - never reserve the cheapest. There was a time when rental companies didn't stock many of the lowest class, so booking cheap was kind of a way to a free upgrade (although the price difference was seldom more than a few dollars). These days, the fleets stock the cheap ones.

I think Hertz has had to cut back because the business is now like the airlines - PRICE. Complain for more, but purchase the cheapest.

Looks like I'll be renting a car soon - possible business trip to Cincinnati again in early October. My boss will be meeting me there, so I'll upgrade to a true mid-size.

And, I had one of those no cruise Yaris' (Yari?) last year.

A friend of mine had a no-cruise Rio as a rental in Florida several years ago. It drove him nuts, as he had to drive from Miami to Tampa or something. That's what you get for saving $5, is your sanity worth nothing more?

I see cruise is standard on the Spark, the Yaris counterpart at Chevy, "Electronic" cruise no less, I was kind of hoping for a mechanical system B)

Doubly strange. I did a Goole search and was taken to the Toyota site which said cruise was standard on the Yaris! Oh well.

With Drive by Wire all cruise is basically electronic now.  Only cost is the switches to control it.

We forget that Cruise Control was once only available on high end prestige/luxury cars like so many other conveniences like power windows/ locks/seats. Now we expect them on a Yaris. :o

I owned cars for over 20 years before I got most of the above on an '87 Saab 9000 Turbo. My previous ride, an '85 Prelude had none of those. It'd be hard to go back I guess but I'd love to get something that didn't have power steering.

With so many cars weighing 4000 lbs these days, PS is a nice thing if one lives in a congested area.

My mom's 85 Tempo had cruise. Nothing wrong with expecting it in 2017, tech marches on, and 30 years is more than a fortnight. Nobody today wants a computer with RAM measured in K or a mobile phone weighed in pounds, either ;)

Some of you must live in the wilderness. It is a rare day I can set the cruise on the jersey turnpike or NY thruway, even if I want to!

I believe my '85 Accord LX Hatch was equipped with cruise.

Else, I wouldn't have as fond of memories about the California to Michigan and back road trip I took in 1986.

RT55 or the Expressway mid weekday is about it

I tried adaptive cruise before, that works pretty good but I still found my self not too trusting and braking.

Get all that. No PS wouldn't work because of the weight of cars and the size of modern tires
I'm just saying that we've also lost a certain responsiveness in exchange for the increases in safety, convenience and reliability

I guess I don't mind the tradeoff too much - we aren't at autonomy quite yet, and there are still plenty of engaging cars on the road, even if some of them are older. If one wants manual everything, pick up a nice MGB or something, still cheap and cheerful.

I remember driving a 68 Fairlane with manual steering, manual brakes, and a 3 on the tree - no fun.

Yes it is "some sort of Healey", perhaps someone can be a little more specific. The white car isn't a Fiat 124 but there is a slight resemblance because they were both styled by Pininfarina.

That's a little closer but it's not a 3000GT (whatever that is). Honestly I thought it was an Austin-Healey 3000 Mk.I/BT7, but then I rechecked the date of the photo and it's from Nassau Speed Weeks in 1956 which means it's probably a Healey100-6'

As for the white Alfa, the only way to tell the Guilia Spider from the Giulietta is from the front
but the photo date tells you it has to be a Giulietta since the Giulia didn't come out until '62.

The guy in the Healey is Ed Hugus, a journeyman racer who drove extensively in the 50s and 60s notably helming Shebly Cobras for the factory team in Sports and GT racing

Growing up we had two engineers up the hill and they both drove a Hudson. I was just a kid, but remember they were pretty plush inside, but then didn't they kind of compete with cars like Buick or Chrysler price wise?
