I think the convertible is a Dart, maybe 65-66.

Anyone know what that blue convertible next to the Tempest wagon is? May be the picture, or my computer, but I can't get a wide enough view on it.

I'm fairly sure it's a second gen Plymouth Valiant in convertible form.

The vent window seems to hint at that. Otoh, the top crease of the upper side sheet metal has a bit of an Olds or Buick look to it as Stick guessed. But I'm stuck with no view of the front or back corner. Now if I could see it in motion at around 60mph and the roof kind of popped or tented up, it would likely be GM, otherwise Mopar.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,581
first thought I had was a valiant, but it seemed too long, and squared off, but that could just be an illusion from the picture angle and the tempest hiding part of it.

That was a very nice ZB Varitone Magnette - The wire wheels are after market as the car wasn't offered with those as new but it's a popular conversion - the hubs from an MGA will do it as the cars are related mechanically,

Certainly better than my old girl which is showing signs of regular use i.e. scratches from shopping trolleys in car parks, the odd stone chip and those little nicks you get when passing in country lanes from the hedgerows...

I've got some rust forming on the sills - unlike the rest of the lower panels they weren't replaced in 2013 and are in fact from a 1990 job -so they have lasted well enough although the car was off road for some years in between.

The Magnette pictured looks that good, because he just finished it. Only took 18 years (lol). Pretty sure he has a higher horsepower engine plus air conditioning. He also has a '62 MGA that he's owned since 1971!

-I should have mentioned that it could be a Dart, which has the same ridge along the top of the body as the Valiant. IIRC the Dodge was the more popular of the two. Looking at pix again, I noticed the Darts had a ridge above the rear wheel and the Plymouths do not so it is likely a Dodge Dart...my bad. :'(

    -Asking $13,500.

Eh, I could be wrong, but 4-cyl and driver quality paint for $13.5k seems too dear.

The giveaway on the '65 Dart GT was seeing one of the three protrusions behind the front wheel.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,545
I was thinking the blue convertible was a Dart also because of the wheels, I see those Mopar rally style wheels more on Dodge than Plymouth, it seems.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,139
Another Mopar clue - the exposed gas cap in that location.

I was stunned when I looked to see what this vehicle was at a car show. I'm probably the
only person on this topic that didn't know this model.

Looks highly modified. I always liked Magnettes, but they have their limitations.

RE: Tempest Wagon-- a very rare bird, indeed, so the high price might reflect the attitude of "ok don't buy it--go find another one". I'd appraise it at $6,500--$7,500 if it was indeed "driver quality".

Are we quite sure the wagon had the rear differential as well?

Until you brought up the '64s, Id forgotten how similar they were to '62s

    64:

The '64 does not have the flare on the bottom of the tail panel or the dip forming a chrome V
that the car I posted has. The green car is a 1962 Impala.

    62:

That slice of Corvette could easily be either a C1 or C2. The C1s got the Ducktail rear in '61 and '62, It was carried over in the C2 Stingrays so they'r very similar from behind

    '62:

    '63:

The ridge on the side of fenders shows up on both the late C1s and all C2s.

Oh Geez---that split window ad is soooo wrong by 2017 standards....LOL! Aside from the obvious problem, the ad copy mentions all the things about the car a woman would want--the amenities, the optional automatic transmission---and nothing about horsepower or rappa rappa exhaust note.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Don't worry, the Little Nero pizza delivery kid will knock that lawn statue down just like in Home Alone B)

I know the spilt window obstructs vision, but I still think it looks cool - probably my age.

I've got one of those Wolseley matchbox cars too - less paint though.

The actual car isn't a Wolseley though - it is an Australian Austin Lancer - based on Wolseley parts but I think they also sold the Wolseley 1500 in Australia so probably the austin was more basic.

This was a local version -Austin didn't sell anything like this in UK.

The Lancer was in production 1958- 60 then replaced by the A40 Farina also assembled in Oz I believe.

Somebody GAVE me one of these once, in Colorado. It had been sitting on his property for a while but it was quite decent, other than not running.

I remember three things distinctly about the car.

One, I couldn't fit in it well enough to drive it for any distance

Two, the window regulators were cable operated and often broke. You only got one chance to install a new one correctly. If you messed up, the cable unwound on you and you had to go buy another new one

Three-- to get the air cleaner off required 4 separate wrench sizes.

Thats right Fin - its a Moskvitch 403 - although they were at the London Motor Show in 1960 I doubt many were sold here - Moskvitch didn't reply start selling cars here until the 408 in about 1965/6

this one may be from former Warsaw Pact Europe and imported more recently (with an age related plate).
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,545
I've always been amazed Soviet cars sold there at all during that era. I can see it by the mid-late 80s when things had thawed a bit, but the 60s weren't the friendliest time when it comes to Soviet relations.

Triumph GT-6 , Yup it's a 1970 Triumph GT6, on paper a pretty neat car and a good six cylinder alternative to the many 4-banger open roadsters of the era but a commercial failure that didn't sell nearly as well as it' siblings, the TR-4/5/250/6 or the MGB-GT. The coupe de grace was administered by the Datsun 240-Z which also featured six cylinders and practical closed bodywork.

    It's a Suzuki Grand Vitara ca. 2007/8

All those CUVs/SUVs look alike to me but the stylized S on the wheels was the giveaway. Wasn't the Grand Vitara an official in the Ottoman Sultan's court back in the 19th Century? :p
