Back in Norway, there are indeed some interesting cars.
Right at the top of the hill is a very white car facing away from us and that is a Skoda Octavia.
Right in the foreground is a light coloured Skoda 1200/1201 (reg A88784)
Top of the hill again is a greyer next dow from the Octavia - that looks like a Moskvitch 400.
Ahead of that is an Opel Olympia Rekord Caravan (estate) and the next car - behind the scooter - is probably another Pobeida but it could be the Warsawza if Norway imported from Poland at that time - I know they did have Russian cars and clearly Skodas but not sure about the rest.
Next down and facing us is a Hillman Minx.

British cars sold well in Norway at one time because we had a trade deal wth them before we were let into the EEC - forerunner of the EU - but thanks to our car industry going bust that is probably history now.....

Behind the Volvo Duett (the two-tone estate) is what looks like a Jag XK120 coupe.

The automatic spell check /predictive text thing has had a field day while I have typed this...
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,537
Ah the Octavia, forgot about that one. I was in the right neighborhood anyway. Same for the Warsawza Pobeda clone.

I didn't want to guess XK120 for the low-slung car, such an atypical thing in boring car-hating Scandinavia of the time,

Boy were Minors popular when that was taken. I count three including the Traveler up front.
I think the purple car is an Austin Farina. The white one next to it is a Rover (P4?).

The wagon looks like a Farina style Austin Cambridge (A55/60?) Countryman, too. The older looking car at far right corner is an Austin A40/Devon. I think the car between it and the light colored Minor is a Standard Vanguard. The car beside the other Farina (not the Rover) appears to be a Ford Consul. I think the car at bottom left is an Armstrong-Siddeley.

Morning folks. I would have been back sooner but couldn't access the site last night.

Andy got the three Minors the Rover P4 and the purple Farina but that was a Morris Oxford V rather than an Austin.
Fin got the rest I think although the Standard is not a Vanguard but instead the cheaper version, the Ensign (different grille). Well done on the Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire - their last model from 1956-60.

You can see all the Minors are earlier ones because the wipers are mounted to clean the screen in two halves. Prior to that even though they had changed from the split windscreen in the late 50s they wiped from the two sides just the same.I think the change in the wipers was about 1962 and they were fitted with flashing indicators rather than the semaphore trafficators at about the the same time. All three of these are the earlier version - one is even the split screen version from 1954-7.

I would say this was taken in 1962 or so as a result and the newest car could be the Austin A60 Countryman which was introduced in late 1961. Earliest is either the Minor split screen or the Rover, as the latter had a face lift in late 1956 and this is the earlier version I think.

For the record the railway engine is a 'Western' class Diesel Hydraulic which were very familiar to me as we had them as our main expresses from Wales to London right through to the early 70s... All of them had names starting with Western - but this one is too small to read properly.

Chrysler 1990ish vintage. The baby imperial? Though roof doesn't look right, so I will go with New Yorker.

    I am a good educated guesser :)

I think the Austin Devon might be just as old as the Rover, maybe older.

I won't guess, I saw the article. But I did ride in one, 20 or so years ago, it was a taxi ride in DC. Middle of summer, and guess what? The electrics conk out, no a/c, no electric windows. My wife and I did NOT enjoy that ride! :@

They even stretched that into a limo. I remember, I think it was Budget that used one to sometimes pick passengers up at the airport.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Hey Fin - I had forgotten the Devon That is certainly the oldest car in that shot - they replaced it with the Somerset in about 1952/3 and the P4 wasn't revised until after that I think
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,563
I think the e class was the bigger platform? Not so obvious gussied up K car.

    It's a 1984 Chrysler Executive Sedan, essentially a stretched New Yorker/K-Car.

Does anyone know if that stretched K car (E class) from Chrysler was the underpinnings of the Dodge Dynasty that followed? Talk about square looking design!

I don't know... the Dynasty had a nice Mitsubishi engine, though. Had one as a rental in Miami, about 1988.

    Per wiki:
"The Dodge Dynasty is related to the Chrysler New Yorker; both car lines were built on the Chrysler C platform in Belvidere, Illinois. It is also similar to the Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue and Chrysler Imperial, which were available from 1990-93 on an extended wheelbase platform of the Chrysler New Yorker."
  • tjc78tjc78 Member Posts: 17,090
THe EClass got a 2.6 L Mitsubishi motor.  The later models like the Dynasty got the 3.0 V6 from Mitsubishi.   Strong motor for the time, most of them smoked like crazy by 100k

tjc - when Mopar minivans smoked it seemed like it was often the Mitsu engine option.

I always related them with the cheaper Spirit/Acclaim, which I think were better looking (I know on the NYer platform rather than K). My driver's ed car was a nearly new Acclaim.

I followed one of these new Morgan three wheelers through some secondary roads in Surrey after going to Brooklands about two years ago in our Ford Fiesta S which is quite nippy and it disappeared on the bends.

    Tiny car but motorcycle performance.

I could drive Minis in the day, but wouldn't ever have fitted into one of these though...

    Two 1948 Pontiacs.

    Two 1948 Pontiacs.

The one next to truck is definitely a Poncho, you can see the chrome striping but the other slopeback could be a similar vintage other GM.

Odd that there's these two oldies together in a pic taken in late '56. The site I took it from says it was taken in '56 but there's a '57 Ford Wagon (Ranch Wagon) in it so it's late in the year when the '57s are already out.

I think the Olds parked under the awning is a '55 or '56, can't tell which, but that two-tone h/t really stands out in among the plain jane sedans and wagons.

As to the second 1948 Pontiac, the large front fender's extending to mid front door, its single thick chrome strip, the chrome rear fender pads, and the forward leaning B pillar, show 1948 Pontiac Streamliner.
