If you guys like airplanes and are ever in the Dayton, Ohio area make sure to get over to the Wright Patterson AFB Air Museum. Unbelievable collection and a great presidential airplanes annex as well. Really not that far of a drive from Columbus either.

That place is beyond excellent. I drove there twice from Ct. to be there. What a collection. It takes at least two days to see everything. One can enter Eisenhower's Air Force One.

This page lists the exhibits. Clicking through the pictures representing each area at the top photo gives a lot of well-photographed planes.

The Presidential exhibit used to be on the base but is now in a new building accessible without taking a secure bus onto the base.

Reposting this because it's an interesting shot of Cannes, France in the mid-50s and oddly it's almost 50% American Iron, a reflection of the worldwide popularity of American cars in the early postwar era:

Stick guy has already called the black '56 T-Bird. I think the white car, closest to the camera but moving away from it is I think a Simca Aronde, France's most popular car in the 1950s.

Plenty other cars in this photo

Crossing the intersection, a 1950 Buick.

Behind that Buick is a white sports car that I can't quite ID which is really frustrating. There aren't many sports jobs that I can't ID.

The black car nearest the Buick looks like a (French) Ford Vedette or Comete. Behind it, a Citroen 2CV, and another way behind it.

Looks like an Opel Olympia Caravan under the palm tree at left, beside a person in what looks like a long white coat.

The white sports car is irking me too, I swear I know what it is, but can't figure it out.

The Opel Olympia Caravan was new to me but I found a pic of one:

As for the sports car. My first thought was perhaps it's an XK-120 FHC but the rear window is too large. Perhaps it's a Jag -120 OTS fitted w a removable h/t of some kind.

Any ideas on what the old looking car near the French Ford is?

Im going to answer my own question. If you look at it carefully you can see a 1930s American style pointed grille. This could be a Fiat 1500 variant, perhaps a 1500D or E.

Simca may have built these under license as they did many prewar Fiats.

Hey Fin, is that a Mercedes Ponton next to the first 2CV?

    I'll grab the '56 Cadillac.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,537
The Opel I see is the prior generation to the pictured one, but I am sure it is an Opel.

The car driving the opposite direction of the 2CV does resemble a lower line W120/121 Ponton, yes.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
That Opel wagon looks a bit like the Vauxhall ones sold at Pontiac dealers back around 57/58. The Opel is just a bit chunkier from what I remember seeing in the Chicago suburbs back then.

I agree the Opel Caravan is the earlier version than the one Andy has found as it looks squarer.

I think the white coupe ahead of the Simca Aronde may be a Simca Huit (8).

I'm not sure about the car coming towards us ahead of the Citroen 2CV as I don't think it is a Ford Vedette / Versailles - the grille is too deep.

I think it might be one of these - an Opel Kapitan - this version was introduced in 1955.

  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
That old black car looks British to me - maybe an Austin or even a Vauxhall - but equally it could be a Fiat - I can't get the picture bigger on my monitor without losing the clarity.

Now that would have been a good investment, in car terms anyway.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,136
And better looking than the new ones, IMO...
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,537
Definitely. Like many high end brands, it isn't as edgy or unique as it was a generation ago, no different from a basic Ferrari or Lambo anymore.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,674
Yup, that's a 1995 McLaren F1. It belongs to Boston Auto dealer/magnate Herb Chambers who is auctioning it off next month and will probably recoup more than 10 times the original list price of just under $1 million.

    The rich get richer.

Fun stuff. Is that a GAZ Pobeda in front of the Saab 92? I think the old car in the shot is a Chevy from ~1930. Maybe a ~51-52 Chevy 2 door HT behind the Pobeda. Numerous interesting things parked on the street too, maybe for later.

I'll start with a few others for now. The easy car I will let others identify (looks like a 1960-64 model) is flanked by a Volvo PV444 and a DKW/IFA F8.

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,674
The car to the left of the VW Beetle looks like a Mercedes 170S (W136/W191):

    I'm pretty certain it is a DKW/IFA:

Behind that '51/2 Chevy is a Willys All-Steel wagon and further up hill you can see it's Swedish equivalent, a two- tone Volvo PV544 estate, like this one:

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,537
Yep, I see the Volvo "Duett". I think split windshield makes it a 444. There are a few of those in this area. A couple cars in front of the Volvo, in front of a little van, looks like another early 50s GM, probably a 53-54 Chevy or maybe Pontiac, and in front of that, another Saab 92. Directly behind the Volvo is something odd, I can't place it, but it is familiar. Further back, at least one more American car, but the older American looking car could be a just-prewar Opel Kapitan.

At the top of the hill I spot a just-prewar Opel Kadett (or early postwar Moskvitch 400 war booty clone), and behind it, possibly a FSO Syrena? I know Scandinavia was more open to Eastern Bloc stuff than other areas.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Yes the 444 had a split windshield and a B16 motor, not the B18 of the 544. It wasn't a very good engine by the way, old Volvo worshippers be damned. It had only 3 main bearings and the crankshafts broke. It was an agricultural engine.
