Here's the same scene from another angle. You can see our mystery car(s) inboard of the red K-G. It's not much help, is it?

Still no cars any newer than '62 are there?

I think the blue car behind the red KG is a Lloyd. No doubt a Volvo dealer would have other oddballs. Car beside the KG might be a Simca (?), and maybe a MB ponton beside that.

Can't tell if the cool flat top Caddy at far left is a 59 or 60, I think a 60. Interesting domestic back lot too, nice color combo on the 58 Ford.

That 58 Ford Fairlane 4dr sedan was not a real common car. Next to that 56 or so Nash, is that a fairly uncommon 55 or 56 Hudson? Picture is kind of blurry on my computer screen. Some kind of interesting used cars on a Volvo lot, which leads me to wonder if the place is selling Volvo's wouldn't that lead you to thinking the picture was taken later than 62? Don't see any newer than 62 domestics, but not real knowledgeable on differentiating imports.

My first thought on that light blue car was Renault Dauphine but after enlarging the pic I think it could be a Borgward Isabella (related the Lloyd IIRC).

It's true that Ford had a down year in '58 after outselling Chevy in '57 but '58 Fairlane sedans weren't exactly unusual. The family across our street had one.

You must have grown up in a wealthier neighborhood than me. Ours was almost all the lower line 6 window models sprinkled with a few Ranch Wagons and Country Sedan Wagons. Guess I'd better call you "sir" ;)

A 58 Ford 4 door HT would be the real rarity, not sure if I have ever seen one in person before.

I don't think I've ever seen a 1958 Town Victoria on the cruise-in or car show circuit in these parts. The 4-door hardtop Chevrolets for 58 are out there, but not the Ford.

Come to think of it, the oldest 57-64 Ford 4 door HT I can recall seeing would be a 63 - and even those are pretty rare. I have seen a few of the semi-fastback 64 models.

The Town Victoria design, with the little notch at the C-pillar, is odd to be, but not unattractive. Of course, for me, the ultimate would be a 1960 model - I have never seen one of those either.

When my kids were in high school they had a classmate who drove a 64 Ford Galaxie 4dr HT. It had that kind of sloping, inverted and slanted C pillar and back door glass treatment. I thought it looked rather cool for the times. Some of the millennials do seem interested in older Detroit iron and design.

The one that most tempts me is a '63 Galaxie 500XL 4-door HT. They offered them in '63 and '64 but they are unicorns. One of the few domestic 4-doors with buckets up front, including a console with floor shift for the Cruise-O-Matic. I thought it was major cool.

Not so much plain as stripped of chrome and insignia as was the fashion when I was in HS.

What is the young man holding in his hands?

He's holding a flask of booze, hence my caption.

So Andys 120, were you a greaser back in those HS days? I remember my uncle telling me about a friend who got a 63 Impala SS coupe for his HS graduation. One of the first things he did was replace the SS 409 Badge with a 6 cylinder emblem. Too much!

Not exactly, my folks wouldn't let me get a DA or a leather jacket but I had some friends who were greasers and very much into souping up old cars, mostly to make them look faster rather than to actually be faster. ;)

Yup, those cars were all styled by Tom Tjaarda, an American ex-pat who worked at Ghia and Pininfarina. He's best known for the Fiat 124 Sport Spider and the Pantera but had a hand in designing dozens of cars. Tjaarda died this year at 82.

80's Renault R5. Wickedly fast and scary machine to drive, since they relocated the engine behind the front seats.

    Think French 911 Turbo.

I think the little car in the middle is an early 50s Aero Willys

Wrench how can you tell the Poncho is a '54 (it looks just like the '53 we had)?

I don't think that the small car is Willys - I think instead its a German Ford Taunus

    Actually more like this one

Definitely a Taunus. Background looks obviously American to me, I wonder how that came over, I was not aware the small run of German Fords sold on this side of the pond in that era were here that early. Maybe brought over by a serviceman.

The '54 had that winged circular nose badge.

(And if there are any other old airliner enthusiasts, the registration number of that magnificent Lockheed Constellation is now assigned to a single engine, 2 seat aircraft! I had the good fortune of flying in a "Connie" and it was one of Eastern Airlines. If only I knew its registration number. Ok, back to cars..............).

At the Constellation's end it ran on the Eastern east coast shuttle (DCA-LGA-BOS). Speaking of the Willy's Aero, when I was a kid the guy who delivered the newspaper drove one of those (not sure of the year though). He then replaced it with a 55 (I believe) Willy's Bermuda. Both were pretty uncommon sights in the Chicago suburbs I grew up in. I had forgotten about those Willy's in my neighborhood. Also had an engineer who owned several Hudson's and another neighbor who liked Kaiser's. Probably because they were relatively cheap used cars back then. Thanks Andys and Lostwrench for the memories! I really enjoy these pictures.

Never flew one, but understand they could sometimes be a bit touchy and tricky. The subsequent Lockheed Electra 4 engine jet prop was considered a pilot's plane (once they resolved the wing attachment problem that is).

Oh yeah the Electras had some real problems. I don't think there are many left in airline service but the P-3 Orions are essentially militarized Electras and lots of 'em are still in service.
